I'm not sure if I should be happy about this or be sad. I'm happy that Serenity is being trusted with being Universal's first release but it is sort of setting it up to fail since no one really owns HD-DVD.

Plus I'm hoping the HD-DVD and Blueray fails because it isn't needed. The quality difference between DVD and these HD won't be much unless you have a bonafide HDTV (not HDTV compatible which most TVs that claim to have this feature are).

The whole idea of this is so that now everyone is forced to buy new players and replace their DVD collections. It won't be long, if HD format succeeds, that DVDs and their players won't be made anymore and in order to get new movies you'll have to buy the new format (which is exactly what happened with VHS).

Until the actual HDTVs are affordable this will be a move that will hurt consumers. The only good from it at the beginning is that it will drive DVD and players prices down since they will be old news.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Well, the TV's are pretty affordable, you can get a 26-30 inch for $400 - $600, but the new HD players are going to cost a ridiculous amount.

They're still about $600 and $900 in Upstate New York. And then you have to worry about whether they are actual HDTVs or only HD compatible widescreen TVs.

You won't actually need to re-buy your collection. The new players will be backwards-compatible.

From what I've heard that isn't the case.

Actually, you can still find VHS copies of lots of movies...and I can't see regular DVDs getting replaced all _that_ quickly.

LOL! Great comparison study... but I, being rather attention-span-deprived, got distracted by the Hobbit pub scene, mousing over and over to make some of the hobbits clap their hands.

HD-DVD will fail...it does not have the backing that BD does...Serenity isn't being released in 1080p also...its only 1080i (which sucks)...I can wait for it to show up on HBO-HD
