Heck, it's easy enough for me to remember, my brother's b-day is the 22nd (I think I know what one of his belated gifts is going to be :)

ZOID

Arabikum gave us the web address to Letters to George (Lucas). Thanks.

I vented, thus:
Quote:

Dearest George:

How could you take the 'baddest', most completely dark character in the history of cinema and turn him into a whiny little bitch?

Of all the injuries perpetrated on a beloved franchise and its long-suffering fans, this one cuts the deepest: making Vader a caricature of the archetypal villain we all knew and loved to hate.

Holy Annakin-on-stilts, Batman! What were you thinking?

Love Always,

zoid
(a.k.a. 'Robin', but don't tell anyone; it's a secret identity)

P.S.
Oh, wait. I already know the answer: 'dead presidents'. Please disregard.

Instead, do you think Princesses are really irresistably attracted to self-confessed infanticidal sociopaths? I don't know many women who would bear the children of a man who had admitted to the wholesale slaughter of "women and children". But maybe political careerwomen hear that and go, "Oooh! I love him so! I want some of that in my womb!", hmmm? We obviously hang out in different circles of humanity, you and I.

Whew! Been needing to get that off my chest. Feeling better, now...

As to sending money and writing letters, et cetera:
All the letter writing has been done and continues to be done, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly.

So, I'm gonna have to agree with Maxrimstain. Y'all need to send money.
(NB: Please don't ever explain how you came up with that screen name; I already feel like I know too much.)

Except one little wiggle on ol' Max's idea: You should send the money to me, instead of him/her. Preferably in cash or other untraceable negotiable instruments. ...Like wire transfers. Just thinking out-of-the-box: Jewelry and other valuable family heirlooms would likewise be acceptable. Just be sure to insure them. We want to make sure that all this money gets into the right pockets to keep our dream alive...

Interested parties should contact me at mo.money.mo.money.mo.money@fleecem_bilkum_and_robb.com.

For the less trusting, you could always buy Firefly and Serenity DVDs (Buy.com's got FF for $23.99 at http://tinyurl.com/mygsp, and BDM for $17.75 at http://tinyurl.com/p6f4a, for example) and then pray to your 'Higher Power' (whutzhername) that somebody in a corporate office will say, "Hmmm. Lookit that. Money."

In fact, maybe someone will like that whole 'making money' concept so much that they'll deliver some fresh product. Just a pipe dream, I know; but it's my dream.

Enterprisingly,

zoid

I'm off to my relatives for the weekend, so I can't type much, but I will when I get back.
Just spread the word about everyone ordering a Serenity DVD on June 23rd and get people excited! And myaybe some of you could work on the details and get more feedback or something. I'd like to help, but I won't have internet until monday night.
A website would be great, MAXRIMSTAIN... Hooray!

Great stuff!!!
I'll buy a copy of the High Definition DVD, even though I won't surely have the player, by then.

Great stuff guys!
Let's not miss coordination here!

THIS IS GOING TO BE MASSIVE!
IF WE MAKE IT HAPPEN, THEY'LL HAVE TO REPORT IT ON THE NEWS, TOO!!

It'd be the first coordinated, mass-order in history!
Imagine the kind of publicity, here!!!!!

I have time and energy to help with this so if I'm not stepping on any toes I'd like to follow up on #2, contacting as many Firefly sites as possible with the idea and hope they post a notice or banner. Here's a start of a list of active Firefly sites I've found, if any of you know of others that would be good to contact please post in this thread. If nothing else we'll have a good links list.

Hitting Amazon.com on June 23rd sounds like a great idea (except for the fact that I'll be traveling overseas). My only worry is that we will be saving up for this event, putting off buying it when we normally would have for one reason or another, and the days around it will suffer.

One day is great... but how about a week? How about dividing up and having a group buy their copy once each day of the week leading up to June 23rd? We can divide alphabetically by last name or something to that effect. That way, the BDM stays at the top for a whole week.

Any thoughts?

Ladies & Gents,

I'm just going to summarise what we seem to have so far. Looks like a plan. Then, if no one minds awfully, I'd like to plant a new thread summarising said plan. It gets a little tangled round here sometimes. I apologise if I'm being presumptuous; all I've really done is shout at my computer screen with glee. Seems like everyone else has been putting in some legwork. Also sorry if this seems superfluous - I just need to get it straight in my head. Here goes:

THE DAY:
23 June

THE NAME:
?
So far...Re-unification Day or Independents Day.
(I'm maybe a little concerned that these are too obscure. If we're doing this in public, does it need to be more direct?)

THE AIM:
(1) Celebration of all things Firefly/Serenity related.
(2) To give a CONCENTRATED market signal to Amazon/Universal/Fox/anyone else interested that there is a MASSIVE fan base out here.
(3) To spread the word.

THE ACTION:
(1)Ask all fans to buy/rent BDM/boxsets/HD DVD/any other related merchandise, within their means. Cue market spike.

(2)Organisation of screenings etc. The US list is massively impressive (I'm going to see what I can do in Edinuburgh). It's just co ordinating things, and TELLING PEOPLE THIS IS HAPPENING.

(3)potential spreading of flyers/stickers etc. 11th hour, I absolutely adore your flyers. Can I pass the link on?

(4)surplus DVD donations to libraries/'book crossings' i.e. just leaving them around for people to find and enjoy. Another beloved idea.

(5) Co ordination and spreading the word to all other fansites. That was a really comprehensive list, Kuangzhede; I'm wondering if you and Maxrimstain shouldn't get together re a website. Technowizards that you are.

(6) http://www.letterstogeorge.com. This tickles me some, Arbikum! It's kind of a stunt, but if EVERYONE sent him one on June 23, it has to generate some kind of attention.

WHAT'S MISSING?
A major concern I have is that we need to say to Universal/Fox/SciFi Channel/Joss et al/any other SciFi media contacts anyone has...LOOK AT WHAT WE CAN DO. i.e. to build anticipation, and then show them how many we are. Someone (Pizmobeach?) posted the http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com link for Universal...any other contacts?

Also: feedback from elders/cynics/the experienced would be good. Re the Family Guy refs from Tarrish and Mutinousmuse - it shows we can beat them using their own weapons!

Again, I'm sorry to be quite so anal about it all. Just wanted a summary. Like I said, I'd quite like to post a new thread presenting all this info. Feedback? Also, Agatsu, could I use the quote about 'ONE day, ONE plan etc.' (fully accredited, of course!)? It's so good...

Damn, could you tell I was a prefect at school?

Sounds good, a clear precise new thread is a great idea
also folks once the links are posted all over the net instead of spamming and duplicating posts, add to an already made one keep it on top where folks ahve to take notice, something simple like, I will be attending ______ screening or , I will be attending the Lonestar Shindig (June 23-25) or I'm saying 5 bucks a week to buy dvds on the 23

what we need are positive and informative responses to keep the thread bumped.

Get your local groups active if you are not a member join one, or make one for your area keep them up to date on this project

A central site NEEDS to be made so info can be more easily spread contact the operators of the various boards and alert them to what is going on here, chances are they can make this a news item or make the message more noticeable

Once the site is up we need banners so people have even more chances to see what is starting

Some comments/points to debate.

-Of course SOMEONE has to become the PROJECT-LEADER or we will just make a mess.

-In my opinion we should stay focused to the movie. Our target is Universal, and publicity.
Not Fox! We can leave the serie alone, just for that day.
Let's all buy the MOVIE.
A focused, mighty blow is better than many little hits.

-I also was concerned about the reduction of purchases before that day... but come on. I decided I'll go for the HD version, I wouldn't have bought it otherwise.
And, we may act as if nothing was happening... we just have to save a few cents each day :)

-We must be sure that the site (Amazon?) accepts pre-orders even if the item is not currently available. Otherwise we'll miss many, many hits...

-There can be problems with the net. No problem in making a Two-Day event, for me, considering also the time differences for all of us Browncoats in the world.

-A Banner for Firefly-related sites, and a little banner for signatures.... ALL of us will have to use the same, everywhere... EVERYWHERE.
Let's UNITE under a common banner.
We all happen to post in many forums, don't we?
This might work even beyond the idea of the 23 june...
Think about it, how many times you see people's signatures in forums, and pass by?
But suppose you start noticing A LOT of people, in different forums, using the same banner... at last you'd be curious, wouldn't you?

-We must start immediately! 23 june is much too close. So, where's the graphic team, already?

Re the big banner:

Sexy, darlin! Big, beautiful and most importantly, direct. The only thing I'm thinking is maybe a Serenity logo placed somewhere? Seeing as the emphasis is going to the movie.

Would suggest talking to Maxrimstain/ Kuangzhede/Pizmobeach...they seem to be quite technowise about setting up a site/getting the banner distributed around all the various fangroups?

Anyone volunteering to set the central website?

Basically more of the same - DVD sales are love, etc. - but... apparently an army of Baby Stewie fans sent *diapers and baby food* to their targeted network exec. I'm thinking, um, *not* taking that particular page out of their book? Heh.

Although I suppose we could all send shotguns...

ya know i was thinking along the same lines. if there is a way to get the scifi channel to to air the reruns of Firefly, not jst in a marathon but rgularly, people will stummble across the show, fall in love with it and start buying the dvds. enough of that happens then fox or whomever will see there is a market and perhaps new air new episodes.

evrybody get that? has this idea been batted around before? Im a newbie so i'd love some imput. thanks.

Someone suggested in the other thread the name "Serenity Day". This could work as the best choice especially since we're aiming for some media attention. By putting the name "Serenity" out there it reinforces what the day is all about.

Just some thoughts before bedtime:
Lots of great ideas and energy... I think I hear the sound of 40,000 Browncoat boots marching! Look what you did Maxrimstain!

I'd be happy to donate the web space and secure the domain name. Along those lines here are a few domain names that are available:

fireflyday.com
browncoatday.com
bigdamnday.com
serenityworldday.com
serenityworldwideday.com
reunificationday.com
unificationday.com

and some that (sadly) are already taken:
independentsday.com is taken
independenceday.com is taken
serenityday.com is taken (!)
june23rd.com is taken

Of course open to any other suggestions that might be available, but a domain name should be decided on first before securing web space. And apart from posting a thread that we can all rally around a web site seems to be the next logical move (as mentioned by Rach and Artcat81, others). If you have some ideas you can check the following web site first before suggesting to see if they’re available:
http://betterwhois.com

Need: Banner Graphics (love your example Jana!)? Web designer?

FWIW - I like your singular “simplify” ideas PIRATA, about suggesting buying just the movie, even though my first thoughts were to buy the series for some friends/relatives. But what you said makes sense: one buy and one banner and one “unified” push.

It’s April 14th, seems like we should be able to get a web site up and running conservatively by May 1st, sooner is better but that’s a reasonable goal, that leaves almost 2 months from May 1st to get the message out.

So I’d like to suggest that we come together and decide on a domain name, so post your favs.
Nice job everyone! Like ArtCat81 says in her sig, "Browncoats are the shiniest folks in the 'verse"

Terms of a domain name, bigdamnday really gets my vote.

Take a gander at the 'Pretty lil' ears' thread: some of the others (including veterans!! Yay!!) are getting on board too. There's a good discussion over the name: seems to be falling somewhere between 'Serenity Day' and 'Find Serenity - June 23rd'.

Also list of proposed action.

Am thinking for website: could a world map be set up with postings of what's happening where and when?

You know, I think this might just happen!

Yo, 11th hour: you are obviously a woman of no small talent in the graphics department. Love your work. Any chance of a specific flyer for the day, once the name gets settled and all?

Yeah,

Be sure to mention http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com

And the current city count

Now that Canada is involved. It is worldwide.

Now I am learning about scary.

11thHour, I'd love to use some of your posters but I'm apparently doing it wrong and having no luck. Help!

Every time I left-click on the link, my computer sounds like it's going to explode and, after much fuss, shows me a tiny section of the poster that's blown up so huge that it's ridiculous. Every time I right-click on the link and try to Open or Open to a New Window, I get the image & it looks okay, but when I do a Print Preview, again I get only a small section of what would be the poster in huge proportions. I haven't tried Save Target to... because I'm afraid the same thing will happen: gigantic image.

I know I'm doing something wrong, but I just don't know what that is. Any advice you could give me would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm ready to buy my DVD on June 23rd, no matter what we call the day.

Thanks!

Sorry about the download troubles... and if your computer exploads... then I'm really, really sorry...

Anyhoo... actually the "Save As Target" function is the one that folks tell me is the way to go. (I use a Mac so I just click on the image and do a "Save to Desktop" thingy.)

Maybe the noise your computer makes is just because it likes to complain about downloading files? Please explain to it that the files have been formatted to be as "lite" as possible. Then after it's done a good job of downloading, give it a pat and tell it that it's a "good computer"!

Don't worry about the image appearing extra large in your browser window... it's perfectly okay that it looks that way. The reason why it looks so large is that you're looking at the high resolution printing version with the lower screen resolution.

For example:

The "Perfect Companion" poster is set to print at a nice, clean 600 dpi to preserve the details. The file measures 5100 pixels wide, and 6600 pixels long. Now if your monitor resolution is set for 1024 x 768 pixels (for example), that's why the poster image more than fills up your screen. Your monitor can only show 1024 pixels across, and the image is 5100 pixels wide... you're only seeing a corner of it, but it's all there.

It's kinda like looking at the image with a magnifying glass. The entire thing is there, but you're just seeing the part through the magnifying glass.

Give the "Save As Target" a try and don't worry about the image looking big. I appreciate how you're putting the effort in to make this work... it can be a bit daunting at first if you're a bit new to doing this kind of thing. Please let me know how it turns out... I want you to be able to use the posters!

I tried saving it to my desktop, which worked, but when I tried to open it I was told it required Windows Picture It! software, which we apparently don't have. I tried just opening it to its own window from the link, but again I was only given a small part of it when I checked the print preview (or I could print it on 3 pages, which still wasn't the whole image). The only way I got one of them to come even close to working was when I opened it to a window and reduced it to 20%, but that didn't fill the page so I didn't print it. I guess I need to keep trying. Or maybe I need to get a Mac?!?!

(Anyone lurking here, I'm not interested in getting into a computer platform debate, okay?...)

I LOVES my Mac with a warm fuzzy passion, so I'd naturally suggest that getting a Mac is the way to go!

However, that remedy is a little on the expensive side, so on to Plan B.

What may be the problem is that you need the right software program to handle an PNG image file. I chose the PNG format because it really reduces file size without loss of quality. JPEGs are far more commonly used, but the files sizes would get much bigger and there would be varying degrees of image degradation.

I know that lots of PC folks have been using the poster files with no problem, so there is a solution here somewhere. If you had a program like Photoshop, or the "lite" version Photoshop Elements, you'd be stylin'.

The thing you need is the right program to handle larger image files. The Windows "Picture It" program your computer mentioned is probably something you have to buy. There could be some freeware or shareware programs online that would do the trick. Google may lead you to something perhaps?

I wish I had some more advice to offer, but I'm just not familiar enough with PCs to properly troubleshoot. Do have any computer savvy buddies, fluent in PC speak, who could give you some advice?

Please don't give up! There is a solution to this... and it's super fun, and a great big kick in the pants to the Alliance, to make the posters and guerilla market.

Keep me posted.

Hey, we could do a browncoat version of bookcrossings! http://www.bookcrossings.com
People 'release into the wild' copies of books so that others can enjoy the same books they like, but we can release copies of the BDM! This could be fun, getting us lots more recruits and making Universal and that which shall not be named to sit up and take notice.

I have never 'Crossed, but I want to start with Serenity. So I have taken it upon myself to redesign the Bookcrossing label to suit our DVD.

This can be printed onto any sticky label and affixed to the inside (or outside I suppose) of the DVD case.

I hope this gets off the ground - it sounds like a great way to promote the BDM !!

So buy a copy, put the label on it, and leave it under a tree, or on a bus, or outside your local DVD store! Please!!

You know Kryten3 that is a pretty shiny idea. I think it is a pretty good way to get new people to check out the DVD, come here, and perhaps to help spread the word.

I am going to print some of these off & run a little mission to local video stores to slip them into video cases. No stickers mind as that just wouldn't be right, but small cards with this message on them is bound to generate interest.

Although I welcome your enthusiasm and find the idea with the crossings shiny myself, I'd advise against putting stickers that say "Just leave me lying around town after watching me!" on copies at your local video store. They might not like it if you give away their property.

Hm, maybe that sticker would look shinier if it were white letters on black background. Bitch to print, though. I like it the way it is, too.

Also, I agree that it's best just to do this with already-purchased copies of Serenity. Of course, if you were to buy out your video store's supply before you put the cards in ....

OOohhh! Kryten3, that's very shiny! May I make some copies to put in DVD's?

Hmmmm....and now where to leave them? A movie theater? Coffee shop? Bus stop? Some festival/public shindig? Wadda ya'll think? Should we try places that have some nebulous tie to FF/BDM or just anywhere?

Anyone? Bueller?

I would love these to be used! If you want permission, you have it! Thanks

And I would recommend leaving them ANYWHERE ... but I think some measure of care should be taken that they reach people who have probably never seen Serenity, and that it is easily noticable and won't sit unnoticed in the elements for weeks.

But perhaps leave them on the seats at a movie theatre playing a genre movie ... sure ... but it might be too dark to see it ?

Coffee shop ... sure ... but the chances are good that the person who picks it up will be one of the staff.

Under a tree in a park ... sure ... if the weather is good.

On a table in the public library ... sure.

On the bus/train/subway/tram/taxi ... sure.

On the ground outside your local DVD store ... well, you could try it.

Random letter box drop, even

Honestly, the possibilities are endless, and they all have their pros and cons. It's really a trial and error thing, I think.

EDIT: I should point out I've never done this sort of thing before, so if there's someone out there with experience in 'Crossing, please feel free to butt in and contradict me.

I could cry. That's just brilliant, Kryten. Make sure it gets put on the official website (once we get it).

I have a fun and possibly unique addition: my parents have just started running a self catering cottage in Ireland. Now if I can just find a way to 'stick' the BDM in the DVD player...

kryten3, the traveling DVD is a wonderful idea!

Just a couple of thoughts...

Maybe some kind of insert could be added where people who watch the DVD can jot down some thoughts about Serenity. The travelling DVD could include a chain of messages from all the people who saw it... like putting travel stickers on a steamer chest as it goes around the world... you can see where the DVD has been... and all the people that Serenity touched.

That's service! But now it's a bit dark around the Serenity. Could you add a lens flare effect right under the middle of her? That should brighten the whole thing up a bit without making the text hard to read, and bring out Serenity's beauty better. It's also a shiny effect.

Well, if it's as easy as asking.. ahem...

I think stickers would be better than cards, because cards can be lost - or just thrown away if the finder wants to keep the movie just because it's free. (Shame upon anyone with a stickered DVD on their shelf for more than a few days! Shame, says I! And Crabs!).
Maybe we could ADD a card to the sticker, and the card is for putting on your name and one or two sentences about the movie, as suggested here.

Just my thoughts... maybe have the insert be more casual... keep to the stickers on the steamchest feeling, or messages in a bottle, more romantical. We don't want it to look too controlled... loose and personal is better. A chart might come off like we're taking a poll.

The space should be like when you sign a yearbook. If folks want to include the city where they live, that's cool... especially if the DVD gets some miles on it.

I'd just leave a nice open space... an insert that's folded so it can expand out. Ask folks to just write a sentence or two... it's not about writing a review or passing on long stories... just sharing snapshots of how the Serenity DVD affected people, messages to fans yet to come, or whatever! (Gee I hope folks keep it clean and positive... heh... )
