This song is very much River.

"Spaceface" by Simple Minds
From the album "Cry"

She don't need no rocket ship (rocket ship rocket ship)
Just close her eyes and takes a trip
Baby's big on aviation (aviation aviation)
Baby loves the levitation (levitation)
Yes she's a spaceface floating 'round
She's never coming down (coming down coming down)
My little spaceface floating round
Shes never coming down (coming down)
Never coming down
Never coming down (coming down coming down)

Baby's talking to the stars
Aint got time for idle wars (space space space)
And I don't worry anyway
As long as I know shes ok (shes ok)
Yes shes a spaceface floating 'round
Shes never coming down (coming down)
My little spaceface floating round
She's never coming down (coming down coming down)
She's a spaceface floating 'round
She's never coming down (coming down)
My little spaceface floating 'round
Shes never coming down (coming down coming down)
Never coming down (coming down)

Tell me what you see
I'll be there if you wait for me
We'll soon be home
I'll be there - you're not alone
Ah spaceface
My little spaceface
Ah spaceface
Never falling down
Never falling down
Yeah, shes a spaceface floating round
She's never coming down (never coming down)
My little spaceface floating round
Shes never coming down (never coming down)
Never coming down

Never coming down
Never coming down

She never coming down

This song reminded me of Mal too.

Building A Mystery
By: Sarah McLachlan

You come out at night
That's when the energy comes
And the dark side's light
And the vampires roam
You strut your rasta wear
And your suicide poem
And a cross from a faith that died
Before Jesus came
You're building a mystery

You live in a church
Where you sleep with voodoo dolls
And you won't give up the search
For the ghosts in the halls
You wear sandals in the snow
And a smile that won't wash away
Can you look out the window
Without your shadow getting in the way?

You're so beautiful
With an edge and charm
but so careful
When I'm in your arms

Cause you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully

You woke up screaming aloud
A prayer from your secret god
You feed off our fears
And hold back your tears, oh
Give us a tantrum
And a know it all grin
Just when we need one
When the evening's thin

You're a beautiful
A beautiful fucked up man
You're setting up your
Razor wire shrine

Cause you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully

Ooh you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully

Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
Holding on and holding it in
Yeah you're working
Building a mystery
And choosing so carefully

You're building a mystery

At last.
We can retire and give up
this life of crime.

I seem to be the only Metallica fan on this site, but thier song Unforgiven reminded me of Mal and how he feels about the Alliance.

You label me, I label you
So I dub thee unforgiven.
Never free, never be.
So I dub thee unforgiven.

And then Unforgiven II reminded me of Mal and Inara.

The door is locked now,
But it's open if you're true.
If you can understand the me,
Then I can understand the you.
Or are you unforgiven too?

CYBERSNARK

"Sound the Bugle" by Bryan Adams, from the Spirit soundtrack:

(*minor key*)
Sound the bugle now,
Play it just for me.
As the seasons change,
Remember how I used to be.
Now I can't go on,
I can't even start.
I've got nothin' left,
Just an empty heart.

I'm a soldier,
Wounded so I must give up the fight.
There's nothin' more for me,
Lead me away,
Or leave me lyin' here.

Sound the bugle now.
Tell them I don't care.
There's not a road I know
That leads to anywhere.
Without a light I fear that I will stumble in the dark.
Lay right down,
Decide not to go on.

(*building to crescendo*)
Then from on high --Somewhere in the distance,
There's a voice that cries
"Remember who you are!"
If you lose yourself,
Your courage soon will follow.
So be strong tonight,
Remember who you are.

You're a soldier now,
Fighting in a battle.
To be free once more.
Yeah, that's worth fightin' for!

Just makes me think of Mal every time I hear it. Post-Serenity Valley, having lost everything. Then at the mid point ("Then from on High"), when he sees Serenity for the first time, and remembers who he is. . .

It just occured to me that Unforgiven also applies to how Mal feels about God.

I always thought this particular lyric was very Mal-like (from "We Never Change" by Coldplay):

I wanna live life, never be cruel,
I wanna live life, be good to you.

I wanna fly, never come down,
And live my life,
And have friends around.

MILFORD

I think Fix You by Coldplay is the perfect song for Simon and River. As soon as I figure out how to make a music video I am.

Coldplay, Fix You, from X & Y
When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

When the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
and ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

High up above or down below
when you too in love to let it go
If you never try you'll never know
Just what your worth

Lights will guide you home
and ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears streaming down your face and I

Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face and I

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Sorry, thought of another one. This works really well for River and Simon.

Bad Day
By: Fuel

I had a bad day again
She said I would not understand
She left a note that said I'm sorry, I
I had a bad day again

She spilled her coffee broke a shoelace
Smeared the lipstick on her face
Slammed the door and said I'm sorry, I
I had a bad day again

And she swears there's nothing wrong
I hear her playing that same old song
She puts me up and puts me on
I had a bad day again

She said I would not understand
She left a note and said I'm sorry I
I had a bad day again
Nooo...

And she swears there's nothing wrong
I hear her playing that same old song
She puts me up and puts me on
Oh I had a bad day again

She said I would not understand
She left a note that said I'm sorry, I
I had a bad day again
She left a note that said I'm sorry, I
I had a bad day
Nooo
Nooo
Nooo
Nooo
Alright
Oooooo
Ohhh

At last.
We can retire and give up
this life of crime.

SHINYFLY

Here's an old one, but it's perfect for Mal/Inara from Inara's point of view : Rita Coolidge, I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love..."I'd rather leave while I'm in love, while I still believe the meaning of the word. I'll keep my dreams and just pretend that you and I are never gonna end. Too many times I've seen the rose die on the vine, somebody's heart gets broken, usually it's mine..." also "So if you wake and find me gone, oh baby, carry on, you see, I need my fantasy.." *Sigh* Perfect M/I. I put it on a Firefly mix CD I made.

"Why would I want to leave Serenity?" "Can't think of a reason.."

TAY

i'm a little late to post...sorry. i think "from yesterday" by 30 seconds to mars reminds me of mal. great song. here are the lyrics:
he's a stranger to some
and vision to none
he can never get enough
get enough of the one
for a fortune he'd quit
but it's hard to admit
how it ends and begins
On his face is a map of the world, a map of the world
On his face is a map of the world, a map of the world

from yesterday, it's coming
from yesterday, the fear
from yesterday, it calls him
but he doesn't want to write the messages...

on a mountain, he sits,
not of gold but of s**t
through the blood he can look
see the lives that he took
from the council of one
he'll decide when he's done
with the innocent on his face is a map of the world, a map of the world
on his face is a map of the world...a map of the world

from yesterday, it's coming
from yesterday, the fear
from yesterday, it calls him
but he doesn't want to write the messages...

what do ya'll think?

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I have heard this song several times this week & it really reminds me of Mal & Firefly, especially the episode "Out of Gas". The song is "I'm Your Captain" by Grand Funk Railroad.

I know that some of you younger browncoats have probably never heard of the song or the band, but trust me, these lyrics were written almost as if for our favorite captain and ship.

Here are the lyrics:

Everybody, listen to me,
And return me, my ship.
I'm your captain, I'm your captain,
Although I'm feeling mighty sick.

I've been lost now, days uncounted,
And it's months since I've seen home.
Can you hear me, can you hear me,
Or am I all alone.

If you return me, to my home port,
I will kiss you mother earth.
Take me back now, take me back now,
To the port of my birth.

Am I in my cabin dreaming, or are you really scheming,
To take my ship away from me?

You'd better think about it, I just can't live without it.
So, please don't take my ship from me.
Yeah, yeah, yeah ...

I can feel the hand, of a stranger,
And it's tightening, around my throat.
Heaven help me, Heaven help me,
Take this stranger from my boat.

I'm your captain, I'm your captain,
Although I'm feeling mighty sick.
Everybody, listen to me,
And return me, my ship.

I'm your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. (x 4)

I'm getting closer to my home ... (x 4)
Ohhhh ...

I'm getting closer to my home ... (x 4)
Repeated to fade

Now tell me that song doesn't all but scream "Out of Gas"!

I wish I was computer literate & knew how to make a video for this song. It seems an injustice NOT to do a Firefly fan vid to this song. I can see the video in my head, I just have no talent or knowledge to make it.
