YOU ALL GOT ON BOARD FOR DIFFERENT REASONS.

But we've all got something in common. And we could do something about it. Celebrate it, remember it, and act on it. Know what? We're gonna.

The 'Get Up & Do Something' thread has been running for sometime, and some suggestions have been made, some plans have been formed. The key words are co ordination and concentration. There's no pressure. But it's an option if you want to.

WHEN: June 23rd.

THE GOAL:
(1) To celebrate all things FF/Serenity.
(2) To co ordinate and concentrate a market signal to Universal/Fox/Cast n'crew/the whole damn 'verse that there is a massive fan base poised out here on the raggedy edge.
(3) To spread the word.

THE ACTION:
(1) Buy Serenity. Simple as that.
- Why this? Because if it happens with this ONE item on this ONE day, it's a concentrated action that can't be ignored. Appreciate that so many have already spent a lot of time/energy/money on this. Think of it as spreading the word; donate the copy to a library/leave on the back seat of the bus for someone to coo over. Take it home and polish it.If you can't buy, rent. Or get someone else to. The point is, an action that will register. On THIS day.

(2) Organise a local screening; for charity, for kicks, for friends.
- There's a hugely impressive amount of activity already planned for this day in the US. Check out
ArtCat81's posting on thread http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=19719&m=284838#284838
for listings. UK fans, start thinkin'.I'm in Edinburgh, and going to have a scout round to see what I can do. And if enough happens, someone call the press.

(3)Flyering/stickering activity.
- Check out 11thhour's site http://the11thhour.home.att.net for the shiniest flyers possible. Do with them as you will.

(4) Co ordination and communication to all other fansites. To let them know what's happening. To build anticipation.
- There are some who are willing to do this: hopefully a central website will be going up soon where people can post planned activity for the day, and sign up interest etc.

This isn't just me ranting. It's been discussed on the other thread - I'm just trying to clarify things somewhat for those are as interested. Nor trying to undermine the work that's gone before. For all those frustrated newbies out there who came crashing in after the first battle had been won, this is your chance to act. For the veterans, advice and experience are needed badly.

I'm leaving it to Agatsu to sum up why. He said it better.

'Too many of our plans seem to fail because there are too many plans - too many petitions for the same thing (hurting the cause in the end), too many people standing on too many soapboxes calling for too many revolutions on too many days.

ONE day, ONE plan, ONE army of browncoats.
Universal may not notice the drops of rain on their Firefly franchise field, but they'll notice

Whatever you do, do somethin'. Alls I know, come June 23...

seriosly though we should call it serenity day. its to the point and new fans may not recognize the browncoats or independents references. and isnt that what the aim is to get more new fans and generate more money? plus for just the people on this and other sites, a thread titles "serenity day" would tickle a bit more interest for more views/replies.
also i think it should be either a week long or weekend long event (fri , sat, sun)

Uh... "Unification Day" is the day the Alliance got control of the planets... and by the way, defeated the Independents.

Why would we want to name this after the day the Feds took over and crushed the spirited Browncoats?!

"Serenity Day", as Beans suggested above, may be the best choice so far... especially because we are aiming for this day to get media attention. By calling it "Serenity Day" we are putting the name "Serenity" out there. We WANT the publicity for the movie and for people to make the connection. Non-fans will not be able to connect names like "Unification" or "Independents" with the Serenity movie.

We would be reclaiming it for our own if we used Unification Day- uniting the fans, paying homage to the show.

I'm sorry. "Serenity" didn't work for me. Months before the movie came out my friends were all"Serenity" "Serenity" "Serenity"- I didn't even LOOK in threads called Serenity, and ignored the piles of emails that flooded my mail-box. It sounded like a monks retreat in the Himalay, or some Americanized flick about Japan.

"Serenity" meant to me what it means to millions of other Americans- contemplating a rock garden or something.
We need a word that MEANS something- Unification- become a part of us. Even though it's exactly what Mal & Zoe fought against, it's what we're asking people to do. *shrug*

I think because we already LOVE "Serenity" and everything attached to her, we have a hard time seeing that means exactly NOTHING to most of our target audience. How many new fans didn't know anything about Serenity until a few weeks ago?

Does what I'm saying make sense?

If you're going to use a term from the show, then keep the meaning consistent. "Unification Day" is the day the Alliance got what it wanted. Feds won, Browncoats lost.

Again, it's the name of the day that means defeat for the Browncoats. Mal starts bar fights on purpose on Uni Day.

There were a lot of fans, still are, who thought that the name "Serenity" may have worked against the movie. One doesn't think "futuristic space adventure" right away in connection with the word "serenity".

However, that IS the name of the movie whether some fans agree with the choice or not. So since that is the name of the movie, and there's no changing it now, then we should use it to the best advantage.

Reinforcing the name is what needs to happen to overcome the fact that a lot of potential fans may have not paid attention to the movie.

Does what I'm saying make sense?

Not really.

You're approaching this from a purely emotional point of view and ignoring how what you're saying is counterproductive to the most effective way to promote Serenity.

We need to think logically about this and what will work best for getting the word out to new fans so that they become aware of Serenity. This isn't just about the fans who already love Firefly and Serenity, this is about getting the word out to people who haven't discovered the 'verse yet.

So whether you like the title "Serenity" or not, it's what we've got and that's what we have to promote... that the name that's on the DVD and that's what people need to know so that they BUY IT.

No, actually, I'm coming at it from a purely marketing point of view.

"Serenity" does not, in the minds of most people, equal "Epic Space Adventure". Promoting something as "Serenity Day" is NOT going to get the attention of exact same people it did't get the attention of over the past two years. It DIDN'T work.

Yes, we need to promote "Serenity", but the name of the DATE and the tag-line need to be something else, or people are just going to overlook it the same as they have in the past.

And think of it from the POV of a total NON-Browncoat -which, I admit after so long as part of the clan it's really hard to do. You need something NEW to grab attention and pull them in. They don't KNOW what "Unification Day" is, except that it's when something was united. I say turn the tables, make it US, the FANS, who united.
Yes, it has a huge stigma but only amongst Browncoats. Not amongst the fans-to-be that we're trying to reach.

What made you pick up Firefly? What made you take a look at Serenity? Was it the names? Because the names really don't reflect what it's about. Just as "Serenity Day" doesn't reflect the mobilization of thousands of Browncoats to promote our favorite film.

Anyway, here's some pics- Large, Med, and Avatar sized! Do with them what you will! (Except linking to my ripway account, please!)

Well I guess I have jumped the gun. I have given a few friends the Firefly box set to get them hooked. It was on sale at Sams Club for $17.00. So I thought now is the time to get my friends hooked. I watched the show when it was on Fox. But I must admit I had not looked for other fans on the net. I am some times slow about that. You think you are the only guy to still like some band form the 80's or old TV show and you put the band/TV show in to a search engine and before know it you are hooked up with quite a few people. When I bought the box set I fell in love with the show all over again. Seeing it all in order really made it work for me. After that I started looking for other fans. So I finally found this site and am very happy to be here. So I will do what I can for the big day. What ever we decided to call it.

I'd cast my vote for SereniFLY Day.

After all, we don't want to lose references to the serie... some think that Serenity is just a regular movie or something.
It's also true that Serenity is much of a "normal" term to catch the eye of the random reader.
I really think we should have a quick poll about the name, anyway, and decide!

As to what something might sound like to a non-fan, "Unification Day" sounds a little touchy-feely. Like, "Let's Hold Hands Day", or, "We're All A Big Family Day".

If the name of the day isn't gonna incorporate the very title of the movie it's promoting, then it'll be better to come up with a name that's got some balls. We need to inspire that rebellious, independent spirit.

"Serenity Day" doesn't reflect a "day" when tons of fans buy "Serenity"? Hmmmm... okay...

Hey, the title Firefly ROCKS! Even Joss has explained why he liked the name so much. "Firefly" conveys excitement... and I didn't pick up "Firefly", I've been watching since the very first broadcast... and I've always LOVED the name "Firefly".

I'm for someone coming up with a name that shows we're FIESTY!

Count me in. Not like my participation was in doubt by anyone or anything. If it was, have you met me?

Of course I have been guerilla marketing so long I don't know much else. I am going to contact local theatres & see what I can find out about a screening in this area.

I will get some of the local browncoats together for handing out & hanging fliers all over town. Maybe some of the local merchants will let me put some up in their stores too, you know, the ones that sell our shiny BDM on DVD.

I like the "Serenity Day" idea. I suggested in over the "Do Something" thread along with a couple of other names I thought of for the day. At first I was stuck on "Independents Day", but the more I thought about it the more I thought it might cause confusion or be perceived as kind of cheesy. "Serenity Day" more accurately conveys the message we are trying to send to everyone, especially new people who are not aware of just how shiny our 'verse is. If we vote on it then my vote is for "Serenity Day".

We need to decide on a name, and move on to the organisation, peeps.

I appreciate all points about 'Serenity Day' - but come back to the main one every time; that it's direct. Buying/Renting the BDM is to be the main point (rather than the boxset, for example), and that gets it across.

I also like 'Find Serenity - June 23rd' as a tag line. It's a little ironic: those posting on this board are many, many glorious things, but serene isn't one of them. Feisty, independently minded, warm hearted, enthusiastic...all true. But not serene. Nor is the movie.

Also, this as a tag line can be used for advance banners/ads etc. It's literal: go and find a screening in your area. Builds anticipation.

So, my vote goes to 'Find Serenity - June 23rd'. Plus Sameertia's banners are sexy.

Whaddayas think?

Given the pitiful shelf space allocated to Serenity at Blockbuster, I see no way we could effect a spike on rentals, unless via Netflix or such. And by June 23, Serenity will likely be off the "New Release" wall and buried in the bowels of the "Action" or "Sci-Fi" sections with only one copy available.

And thanks for the praise on the banners, Rach. Just a little something I whipped up last night- already using it as my avatar on two other sites

I think someone else said better what I was trying to say above: If we want to draw in new fans too, we have to do something that tells them WHAT the 'verse is about and the name "Serenity" isn't giving that. Theres an old adage in writing "Show, don't tell." We need to SHOW what Serenity is in order for new fans to understand.
And in that direction:

So, is there a reason that y'all are not sticking with the original, "Can't Stop the Serenity" moniker for the June 23rd events?

Has anyone checked with B!x?

Because "Can't Stop The Serenity" didn't really work all that well? People didn't know what it was or what it was about, unless they were already tried and true Browncoats.

I have no problem with using the same url, but we need more promotion than that, I think. :)

MALAYNADREAMS

I'm in

Also, I think it'd be good to make threads like "What did YOU do for Browncoat Day?", with pictures of stickers posted places, or people dressed up in Serenity gear, or of people with their newly bought extra BDM, etc. So we *know* people did something--and it feels real, feels more special, seeing what other people did around the world. It also gets people to think, "Browncoat Day?...huh?" & pop in.

Or, actually, Do you think it's possible to have a Browncoat Day (or whatever it'll be called) website? Similar to the websites where people take pictures of certain things (like, when Bush got reelected, there was a site where people sent "I'm Sorry" pictures...and there are other websites as well). I find that those links are easy to circulate around the web--everybody comes across 'em at one point or another. So when they see hundreds of pictures of what we did, they'll be interested--or at least, aware. It'll also solidify this for future years and be simple...just pictures of what we did, and perhaps a little intro. Simple's good.

EDIT: Oh--I see there's already a website going, heh. But I still think the picture idea is good ^_^

EDIT2: also...I like the name of Browncoats Day (I voted on the site)...because "Browncoat" is something different (everyone has heard Firefly or Serenity used in diff. contexts) but Browncoat makes ya go--"...What?" I know when I first got into the show a month ago & was frequenting the boards, I saw all this "Browncoat this and Browncoat that" and it was interesting to me. When you connect yourself with a certain name, it gets attention. Like, Trekkies or whatever other names. People eventually know who they are and what they stand for.

So, for me, I think it's important to get out who we are--and we're Browncoats. Even if they don't know what our cause is about, they'll know who we are. And later when we get the show back, they'll remember.

Here's a suggestion: to all those that post in other sci-fi boards or other boards in general why not take the banners supplied earlier (if the creator doesn't mind as I'm sure he/she won't) and post them along with your signatures on the other boards again just to build anticipation/curiosity about the whole thing. Or if we decide on one official website to organize this...then maybe use a banner from that site with some sort of tagline...Just a suggestion.

Also...I liked browncoat day myself because fans know what it means, nonfans arn't as sure so again it may create curiosity and intrest.

I WILL be going out and buying a DVD and I think this is an extremely shiny idea. If anyone needs help with something, please message me. I don't know how to program websites or anything, but I can email and write with the best of us!

I vote for Browncoat Day.

Other ideas:
Has anyone thought to e-mail or call SciFi Channel and ask them to play Firefly that day to celebrate? (I'll do an e-mail!)

Ask the night shows to interview Joss (and the rest of our BDH's). (I'll do this too!)

Hit Hot Topic and buy a Browncoat/Serenity/My Turn shirt that day. (Already got mine, but my little Browncoat could use one!)

Call your local radio station that has a "Sound off!" (like 93.3 WMMR Phila's Love you, hate you line) and say, "Happy Birthday Joss! Bring back Firefly!" FLOOD the damn airwaves! If we have to piggyback on other people's signals, then we'll DO IT!

Add any showings of Serenity on June 23rd for Browncoat Day to local TV stations' calendar of events.

Contact local SciFi clubs and inform them of your efforts and Serenity showings. Ask for help, and ask them to include it in their newsletter! Do this soon so it can be included in a May and June Newsletter.

Reminder:
Keep any purchases to licensed material. Joss, Universal, Fox et. al. won't see a penny or any sales records unless we keep it strictly to those people who can be influenced by what we're doing!

Instead of putting flyers up in random locations, how about we find out where the big guys in suits work?? And post the flyers all over their front doors?? *Dinky hopes they don't use helicopters to go and leave work, I wouldn't want to have to go all the Matrix 1 on them just to put some flyers on their roof*

Everybody's been doing the charity events and all since forever, and it seems as though these people don't care. I don't think they notice.

Let me explain WHY I'm focusing on doing television stations and radio stations.

The one thing that Firefly and Serenity have been known for is their success in viral marketing. Us Browncoats are experts in it. It costs the studios nothing if we're doing all their advertising for them. That's what they rely on and what got our BDM made.

I feel it's time to make us somewhat mainstream, and at a viral level, but a step up. Focus a little more on your local areas, hitting the television stations and radio stations. Internet sites and forums are a global way of looking at things, but they'll only hit the focus audience of people like us. We want to hit a NEW audience of people who have yet to see and love what we are so passionate about. Pique their interest, get them to spend their cashy money.

Personally, I feel that radio stations are an excellent target for our viral marketing. There are a few stations here in Philadelphia that are ALWAYS looking for something gimmicky, something weird, and something other than mainstream to promote. They're on the air every day, putting out hours of airtime on their talkshows, and ALWAYS looking for content that is whacky and will attract attention.

Heck, buy a few DVDs and mail them off to a radio station in a package and encourage them to do them as contest prizes for Browncoat Day! (what I've been saving my money for lately)

We are at a disadvantage here because there isn't really any formal organization of Browncoats. At least, not like there are "Starships" dedicated to meeting once a month in respect to Star Trek.

But we do have a major advantage. We are ACTIVE fans. And we are fans who speak with our cash: the one true way that studios and marketers and movie investors pay attention to.

We can and will do this. We have to!

I'm in. I agree that we should keep it simple, focusing on purchasing as many copies of the BDM as possible on that day and going to screenings. I also think that kaele is onto something by trying to get some mainstream media attention. Another easy way to do this is to write in to your local newspaper (or post on your newspaper's website). A blurb about Serenity Day, who we are, and a little bit about the 'verse would serve as an interesting public interest story.

I just want to repost the link to this webiste:

http://www.straightfromthehorsesmouth.co.uk/firefly/

This is where we all need to go to get this all started.

I like the idea of getting media attention. I've already suggested that we bombard Universal with letters during that time period. Just Universal for they alone are in control of our 'verse. And since the postal system isn't perfect, we would have to mail as many letters and postcards in the week before and after June 23.

I like the idea of postcards along with letters because they are harder to ignore. They have pictures, and people always notice something shiny.

I also think that letters and postcards publicizing this event should be sent to the media. I mean both local and national media. All we need is one lucky reporter to catch wind of this and run with it to make the national news. We just need to find that one reporter, and that takes a lot of repeated letters from mutlitple sources.

Finally, I can't stress enough to go to that website so we can stop discuss this and get organized. That is what we need right now. Organization, and a lot of DVDs sold.

Well, I would have liked an option to vote "SereniFLY", but whatever. ;)

The important is to get started, and my most sincere congrats and thanx for putting the site up and running already!

Next step: find an agreement over the banner!
If the name doesn't tell everything, then the banner has to fill the blanks!
Either show the Ship, or the Captain, or the logo of Serenity, or all.

Maybe I'd avoid those recurrent quotes we all like to use.
We don't want to look like brainwashed rabid fans. Just rabid fans, you know
Let's just show what we can create, and move ;)

I think these are all great ideas. Maybe we should have the website listed an update with all the suggestions in there so we can speard the word a little more effectively adn efficiently.

I'm for a charity screening in buffalo, NY but i feel like i'm the only browncoat in the area. Is there anyone that can help or at least just hold my hand through the process?

june 23rd isn't exactly the best timing for me either sicne that'll be the last week for my summer calculus II class but i'm willing to sacrifice some sleep and maybe an ulser or two for the contribution

Perhaps the newer fans aren't aware of this, but...

there already is a BROWNCOAT DAY.

It's previously been dedicated to December 9th, (2003) the day the "Firefly" DVD box set was released.

"Browncoat Day" is taken.

I'm all geared up for Serenity Day and ready to help in any way I can. I don't remember who designed the postcard based on mphillips artwork a while back, but I liked that. That is something I would like to see us use against Universal, along with maybe a few other designs. I'm not good at those sort of things, but I'll see what I can do.

As soon as we get that website up and running, the media has to know about this. It is vital to this operation that people know it is going on.

Oh, and I was just looking at my UK poster (i like it better than the US version) and I thought of this, hope you like it:

On June 23, we aim to misbehave.
