Formerly known as the Browncoat Army.

Ok, I'm not giving up, not by a LONG shot. I just liked how crew sounded better. I MUCH prefer being associated with Mal and our BDHs than those lilly livered Independant bigwigs who gave up on Serenity Valley. LOL Plus, we were getting too large a thread over there and someone asked for a new thread, so it seemed like the best time for my name change.

Mission updates:
(please check often for updates posted HERE, not further down the thread)

Website Job: According to what Maxrimstain has posted a website is already purchased and as soon as I get an official word on what it is, we're running with it. From what I've read, April 20th is the goal date.

Signature Job: Please change your signatures to this:

One movie.
One day.
One mission.
On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.
(official website link to be added soon)

Again, Crew is more fun oriented. I'm doing this out of love, not to attack anyone! I hope everyone else agrees.

Banner Job: All submissions are to be sent to pizzaaoow@yahoo.com MalNourished is in command of this mission. Please have all banner submissions sent to her by April 22nd. Content should include some form of "Serenity Day, June 23rd" and "Browncoat".

Avatar Job: Please contact pizzaaoow@yahoo.com MalNourished is coordinating this.

Tee-shirt Job: In progress! Yay!

Webring Job: "Browncoat Crew" webring. I've had a few volunteers and will be mailing them shortly.

Webmaster Job: Any volunteers for this mission, please contact followmal@gmail.com You will be combing the web for all Firefly and Serenity related sites. We're going to start e-mailing those webmasters to link to the June 23rd website and to hopefully display our banner. This is a huge undertaking, so please see FollowMal for a form letter and which websites you can hit.

Spam Job: ZISKER has volunteered for this mission. Please PM http://www.fireflyfans.net/showprofile.asp?un=zisker to volunteer to help. This is to get the word out on BROWNCOAT related sites ONLY.

Blog Job: I need a movie submission to be put up on people's Myspace, LJ, blogspot, and any other blog related site for Browncoats to upload to their blogs. I want a mini-commercial. Submit them to me please. I've had a bunch of volunteers and will be assigning a leader soon!

Podcast Job: Volunteer is working now. :)

Radio Job: Chindi will be handling this one. She will be sending care packages of DVDs to radio stations for them to give away on Serenity Day as contest prizes. Anyone who can mail me with information as to the largest local morning radio show in these cities would be greatly appreciated: Washington DC, NYC, Chicago, Seattle, Vancouver, Kansas City, Boston. (We've already got Philly, SF, and L.A. covered)

Serenity DVDs: Please go here to purchase them if possible: http://homevideo.universalstudios.com/title_old.php?titleId=2619 This is Universal's website. I feel this would be much more of an impact than hitting Amazon and the money would go straight to Universal. It'd be within their umbrella and I feel the sales numbers would reach them much faster. Now, I'm NOT saying don't go to Amazon. I'm giving my recommendation. If you cannot purchase online, we'll take any sale of the DVD! Go to a local store if you need to. Just buy! (Universal site is my preferred method though. Thanks to PizmoBeach and 11thHour for the suggestion!)

Serenity Day vs. Firefly Day: I can't admit that I like one or the other better (I love them both!), but please, EVERYONE consider this. Browncoat Day is already designated for Dec. 9th, the release of the Firefly DVD. And Firefly Day has already been taken. For my part, I am going along with what was already in place by the Serenity Now/Equality Now people. They started first and they're pushing Serenity, not Firefly. And seeing as how it's Joss' birthday and he supports Equality Now...

This has already taken me over a half hour to write and coordinate, I'll be posting again later with names to attach to missions. If I didn't list your names, I apologize! I'll be doing my updates, I promise.

----
WE CAN AND WILL DO THIS!

BTW, everyone who has volunteered...this is the most important thing of all:

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

~Kaele

Kaele, I apologize for sticking my nose in this, but how about:

Crew sounds smaller than an army, and Mal took on a mission in Serenity. . .

This tagline would work for those doing screenings as well.

Shiny!!!

Allow me to toss in an additional idea (for us foreigners, mainly).

See, I own already two copies of the movie.
I don't need another one for me (right now), so the point is: whom to donate the copy I **WILL** purchase directly from Universal?
All my friends have it already. Also, I don't want a mess here, I want to take part of the ONLINE FRENZY (we should really try to order the movie at the same place!!), and so we'll be talking about Region 1 versions, not playable here...

So, what about making a list of EXISTING addresses to send the movie to?
I'll pay the copy, and just have it sent to someone else... possibly a potential new fan, but if everything fails, even a RANDOM address would do... spreading, spreading, spreading!
This list would be aimed to foreigners like me, or anyone else... of course we'd have to implement a way to delete "already picked" addresses...

A thought just occurred to me. We need to agree on a timezone, and have everyone buy the DVD while it is June 23rd in that timezone. I suggest Pacific Time. That's where Joss lives, and Universal is at least partially located there.

That would mean that all online purchases on June 23 should be made between 00:00 and 24:00 Pacific Daylight Time (that's -7 hours UTC/GMT).

If you can't buy online, then I suppose you should purchase the DVD when it is June 23rd in your timezone.

One movie.
One day.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

I'm not sure I understand the logic here. We're a world-wide fanbase. I think it would make far more sense to have sales come around the globe in waves. Plus, our UK & German counterparts are probably going to only be able to buy from Amazon.de and Amazon.uk, or be stuck with higher prices and shipping costs.

I also think that telling people NOT to buy from their local stores is a bad idea. Small retailers may not be able to show the impact of large ones, but they are vital to any commercial base, and we want the support of any market we can get.
(And I'm not just saying that because I manage an independent bookstore.)

Pirata, I was just thinking about this when I went to bed last night! Were you pulling a River on me? LOL

Well, yesterday I stopped into my local library and asked if they had a copy of Serenity. Lo and behold, they didn't! So...ideas for your new DVDs that are now your extra extra copies: Please find a local public or school library to donate them to. I have quite a few colleges around here that I'm sure would welcome a copy as well! Even if some public libraries get extra copies, they sometimes have sales to raise money for the library. I'm sure they'd be more than willing to include an unopened DVD into their bins to raise money.

Look in the phone book for your local public library. It's amazing how many people watch dvd's when their free. I know I took chances on a lot of movies I NEVER would have rented; new-ish movies like Serenity or series box sets get waiting lists as soon as they show up. Even better: they often break the box set into 4 different dvd's to check out, reaching more people at once. It will be a constant conversion tool, with new people watching it every couple of weeks.

*edit* Wow, Kaele, I guess great minds think alike. You just type a wee bit faster!

I don't wanna start a fuzz, but "Browncoat Crew" sounds kinda lame, and totally misses the notion of MANY.
The word crew doesn't evoke the image of a lot of people in my mind.
The crew is nine. Nine is not many.
The Browncoats were thousands. Thousands is many.
Many is the point.
The Browncoats ARE an Army, for crying out loud, and they fought for a good thing. They even use the word army in animal documentaries about penguins and the like. Didn't make anyone like penguins less.
"Browncoats" is the nickname for the Independent soldiers, period. ARMY soldiers. No crew involved. The CREW is the crew. Only 2 Browncoats involved there. It's confusing (further enhanced by my bad grammar, I admit).
I skipped military service and did social work instead, and get a bad conscience every time a certain war is mentioned that even my father was too young to witness, just because I was born a German. Our "army" these days, the Bundeswehr ("Bund" means Union (of the German states), "Wehr" means "defense" - nothing aggressive in the name) only does aid work, btw, no killing involved. That's the U.S. armies specialty these days.
Anyways, I'm really not into the real wordl military, but I'm into context, and when it's about a slogan, I go with the oomph instead of the flowery PC. It's not like we're "One Goosestepping Horde of Browncoats", and the pictures of the Serenity or Jayne wearing his Jayne hat should definitely show that.

I admit that sounded harsh, but we don't have time for flowery words, and now that I have spoken my piece and vented my... discontent, I leave it to the leaders to decide and will not engage in further discussion.
I'll shake my head and roll my eyes if we're gonna be the "Browncoat Crew" or the "Greenpants Quartet" instead of the "Army of Browncoats", but I won't speak up again, and it won't affect my dedication.
I mean no disrespect, but "Crew of Browncoats" is weak sauce. Sounds like we're like 15 people or sumn. mumblegrumble

That said, I still love y'all, but had to pull a Jayne here.

I purchased space this morning from a reputable web host, one named Badgerswebhosting... just kidding Anyway, you can check off web space.

The domain name and name of the event still seem to be a concern so here's a recap:

serenityday.com - it seemed like a great one but the domain name was already registered.
fireflyday.com - when Browncoats were polled they voted this way by a wide majority 155 to 34 for this one. Democracy in action, a pretty clear winner. There was a Firefly Day a while ago but I don't think this will cause confusion and we may only get this day one more time... shutter to think.
serenityjune23rd.com - I also bought this domain name to try and satisfy the people who said they thought it was about Serenity, seemed reasonable. 2 different domain names pointing to the same web site. If someone types in either in a web browser it will take them to the exact same web site where they can find out about June 23rd, and Firefly, and Serenity and meet some crazy people called Browncoats

Voting polls from http://www.straightfromthehorsesmouth.co.uk/firefly/
155 Votes fireflyday.com
32 Votes reunificationday.com
22 Votes browncoatday.com
6 Votes serenityworldday.com
5 Votes Keep this one
4 Votes serenitybrowncoats.com
4 Votes fireflyevents.net

So fireflyday.com and serenityjune23rd.com - it won't please everyone but at least there's a choice, like creamy or chunky, and as your list shows there's a hell of a lot left to do!

sameertia--

It's been said many times that the whole point is to produce a spike in sales on June 23rd. In order to do that, we need to decide during which 24 hour period we are going to make the purchases.

As stated above, there is a lot to be gained by buying the DVDs from Universal. They are who we need to impress with our unity and purchasing power, so why not buy directly from them?

Also notice in my above post that I suggest that people buy from local stores on their local June 23rd if they can not buy from Universal directly.

Since every sale will eventually reach Universal, does it even matter where we get it?
Originally I suggested amazon, but someone (I think 11th Hour) convinced me that it was a bad idea to stick it to the little shop nice guy like that by buying from the big shop faceless guy.
So now I say, just get it any way you can. I'm gonna buy several copies that day from several sources, including the Kraut and Aussie amazon (Hope they got the tin box back in store by then) and at least one local store, preferrably a small one (but most of those don't even have Serenity).
All of those sales will get noticed at Universal.
Some of us can't order from Amazon, some can't go to local stores. Let's not miss a single DVD sale because someone couldn't log on to amazon that day or something. People just get excitable as to choice - like to have their options open.
Amazon or Universal's website should get plenty of orders either way, since I am 100% positive there won't be enough copies in stores for all of us, anyways, and I'm also sure I won't be the only one who buys more than one copy that day.
June 23rd is like our personal spring break - Browncoats Gone Wild! You'll find yourself buying more copies than you wanted soon enough, believe you me.
So my vote goes for EVERYWHERE YOU CAN, but if you get more than one copy, one should be ordered off amazon or Universal.

Hi.
I just want to make a small comment.... in terms of slogans I understand the need for a unified respose, and for the mai nwebsite... one slogan would be sufficent(Kaele and Max.... whats his/her name lol can decide), but I dont see why ... different people in their signatures should have the same slogan. They can have different versions of it and they can suit it to their desires. Whats important is to have the website link in the signature. So have one slogan for the main website, and allow people to play around to suit their needs the slogan in their signatures.

I understand the point that was made about spiking sales by only buying on one day, hence the date. However, I think that time-zones won't matter.

If I buy in London on June 23rd- the sale still files as being on June 23rd, even though technically West Coast time it's only the 22nd. That is the report that Universal will see- Sales recorded on the 23rd in India, Japan, or Australia will still show as being sold on the 23rd. Am I making sense?

If not, no big thing. It's too small a thing to quibble about. I just wouldn't like to see our Australia counterparts staying up all night to get that Pacific coast time sale in, or just blowing it off because it IS the middle of the night.

As for slogan, that debate is still raging, but I still like the one I posted the very first night we started this discussion-

"The browncoats unite" implies that it's a war veteran meeting or a fan convention or something, surely an insider thing ("THEY unite, what's that got to do with me?"), whilst "One army of browncoats" indicates there's obviously lots of people with a plan bound on doing something big.

Can I ask who's in charge of the T-shirts? Because I have a CafePress shop in which I am planning to make Serenity/Firefly Day shirts, mugs, buttons, stickers, etc. http://www.cafepress.com/reunification

I've fashioned a sort of logo with a firefly and the Chinese for "unity", but if anyone has a better idea, I'm taking suggestions, requests, hell, even orders, for anything people want me to put on any kind of merchandise. I'm not all that creative on my own, so any ideas would be great.

And is anyone making posters already?

Oh, and on the subject of the name, I'm quite a big fan of "Re-Unification Day" which I've seen some other places. Merchandise will bear that name until I am notified of a definite title.

Ok, one complaint. Why are we starting with "One movie". Isn't the plan to have MORE than one movie? And I don't think anyone's given up on hope for a series...or at least, refer to it as one 'verse, because I'm pretty sure we're not picky as to format right about now. :)

...how about we just cut all of that out and just say that on June 23rd, the Browncoats Unite. I think on that at least, we can agree on. :P

Did anyone ever consider about asking a neutral party what they thought? Someone who is not a Browncoat maybe? Someone who doesn't know who the Browncoats are? You know, see what they think the first time they read one of those slogans. We shouldn't just go on guessing how people would react.

If no one wants that then we should vote on that too. Or just let the General make the decision and we all learn to live with it.

Either way, whatever you want, Browncoats will probably back you up! This event is too important for fights and disagreements about this!

Agatsu, and Silence I think that's a good idea. Why spend time guessing what outsiders would think when we can just ask them?

I sure am tired of being called ignorant. No one can know everything, though some people like to pretend that they do. I happen to think that Browncoats are an intelligent group of fans, and it ruffles my feathers a bit when someone implies otherwise.

We are not all going to agree on every detail, and that's okay. It just seems like people argue against whatever is being proposed at that particular moment, so we are spinning our wheels here.

SameErtia, there is no need to be flinging insults around. We did not discount your arguements nor did we tell you that you were wrong. I just happen to disagree with you, nothing more. I haven't insulted you and have been trying awfully hard to stay positive and still take what you're saying seriously.

Do NOT call any of us ignorant, do NOT call us uneducated. We have done nothing of the sort to you. But me listening to your point of view objectively is getting harder and harder when you insult all of us.

Your issue is with a concept of the original storyline made up by Joss Whedon. We had no control over that. The Browncoats in his 'verse ARE an army. It is a gimmick and an emulation for a fictional show that is harmless. We are all intelligent enough to understand that. I am sure I am not the only Browncoat around who also available to anyone who wants that particular point explained to them. If you'd like to open the Nazi and/or North vs. South imagery in Firefly/Serenity debate, that is for another set of threads entirely.

Please stop the insults.

Hey Sameertia,

Browncoats are no Nazi brownshirts; if anything, they are reminiscent, and ostentatiously so, of the American civil war era; no one, in their right mind, would ever make the association with Nazi brownshirts; not unless they're irretrievably stupid, or congenitally insane, that is. Or, yeah, ignorant. :)

Hi.
In terms of slogan and what time to exactly buy it...and even ultimately where to buy it are inconsequential details...and I think kaele and others in charge should just agree on something and let it be. Its great to have discussion and see the various options...but at a certain point just decide. There are other issues to worry about.

Whats important in my mind is that we enlist as many people as possible in this. Browncoats and non-browncoats alike. We dont want to be seen as a bunch of crazies who are delusional and unrealistic. We should seem like rational passionate people , passionate about getting a good story. I think the mission should reflect that. I hope people dont expect a sequel right away and I think its important for Kaele et al. to press that issue. If this movement is seen as a long term (not crazy off the cuff idea), and there is organization etc.. and it is percieved "we are keeping our heads", then more people(even the cynics) will be inclined to join.

Its great that we rally the entire fandom(and then some and attractattention etc), but its important people clearly aware of not only what needs to be done, but what is it we are trying to accomplish. I am worried and concerned the more exuberant people will be expecting a sequel as a result of this, and the more cynical will see this as a waste of time and a pipe dream(like the attempt by a fan to buy the rights for the firefly series and the collecting of money to pay for episodes to be made).

Anyway I think this is very cool...I just think its important people are aware of what is the exact point of this and what are the expected realistic outcomes of this, and people dont loose sight of this. Kaele...I do not envy you, and I think you are doing a good job, and I am glad someone as enthusiastic(and relatively level headed) like you is running this.

One Plan,One Army of Browncoats is just a little too reminescent of Nazi Brownshirts. YES, I understand that BROWNCOATS won't see the reference, but if we go plastering it all over every bulletin board in existance, OTHER PEOPLE are going to see and THEY are going to care.

Sorry, I pretty much live over at "Highlander-Community"= They are smart, they are educated, and they know their history. (Duh, we're Immortal!) One Plan, One Army of Browncoats is more like to get me banned than it is for people to ask what it's about.

Are peeps really that ignorant around here that they can't see how others might take the statement?

Ok, Sameertia.... usually I'm a peacemaker around here. I've been watching you post all of two days now and usually I don't say a thing, but I can't hold my tongue anymore.

Please stop calling the good folks who love Firefly just as much as you, ignorant. They are not ignorant or uneducated. Would you think or say that Joss was ignorant or uneducated because he chose Browncoats as the name of Mal's army?
Because that is where that came from. You know full well that you yourself said on another thread that it was more related to the US Civil War in Joss' ideas than to anything related to WWII or the Nazis.

I am asking you as a fellow Browncoat Sameertia, stop being insulting to your fellows. We are all here because we love this show. And each other.
We don't need to tear each other down. We need to be there for each other. This is going to be an awesome endeavor we are undertaking. And it stands a real chance of working. We need to fight together ( your distaste for military analogies aside) not with each other.

I've been watching this indecision go back and forth and it's getting us nowhere.. we need to come to a consensus on the signature and the day name and get on with this.

I'm holdin' til Mal gets back with every Browncoat here.. all of us.. together.

One day.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave!

Hi kaele.

Well I wont shoot you unless I really half too ;)
That uber long post(I hope you agree with me), can be summarized that we need not just a mission statement, but a set of realistic realizable goals. Optimistic, but not delusional. Should be front and centre on the website. I just dont want a repeat of the previous attempts(lets pay for firefly episodes, or lets buy the rights of the show). They were nice... but unrealistic. And after those campaigns stalled or stopped, Im sure the fandom got a bit more jaded. If they are realistic...like reminding universal we arent going away, giving the fandom a rallying cry to do something(especially the newbies!), get publicity (even if not grandiose like the promise of a return of firefly/serenity) then people will be drawn in, even cynics. They can still be inspiring.

Anyway I will get off the soapbox, and leave you to it. All the best!
