TALLGUYME

So, as a new Browncoat who just recently bought (and subsequently devoured) Firefly on DVD about a month ago I was bummed the series was so short lived... but I always had the movie "Serenity" to see before the 'verse was totally over for me.. Well... having just received (and subsequently ravenously devoured) the "Serenity" movie from amazon.com, I am truly saddened that I have nothing more to look forward to in the "Firefly" universe (at least as far as we all currently know)...

Thoughts... the show was fantastic... the movie, equally as wonderful, although, by very nature of it having to be a contained 2 hour storyline, a bit rushed. Can't say how I would have perceived the movie having not seen the show 1st...

At any rate, I've never watched a sci-fi show before where I felt that I could just watch hours and hours and hours of these characters going about their daily lives.. fixing the ship.. preparing food.. bickering... doing the mundane, routine stuff that we all do, or we all would do in a broken down junkheap of a spaceship that we called home... do y'all feel that way?? that, yeah, the scenes that propelled a storyline were great, and eventually, ultimately necessary, but it was the moments that could easily have landed on the cutting room floor that truly make the show special? Oh well.

A few more thoughts on the movie... sad to see Book and Wash die. Book's death was easier to accept, especially because it acted as the impetus to get Mal pissed off enough to go to Miranda. Wash on the other hand... heartbroken to see him die... he and Jayne are my 2 favorite characters... Wash was like a little boy behind the stick of Serenity... his humor will be sorely missed, if there is ever to be a continuation of the Firefly universe... oh, and I'm torn about how he died too... part of me wanted a touching sendoff, ala Spock in the Wrath of Kahn... but part of me applauds Josh for killing him off so abruptly, as people in the real universe often do... kudos to Zoe for keeping it together and 'holdin' the line' under those circumstances.

PS: great outtakes on the dvd, and a wonderful intro by Josh... you can really see how he beams when he talks about the Firefly universe...

Aw hell people.. I'm sad, Gorrumit!

Stay shiney,
Tallguyme

lol, that sounds rather familiar... :)

I went through the same thing, myself. (Just gets harder and harder to watch the end of the movie each time, too.)

Also, completely agree about the little moments. If we can't get another sequel or a series going, all I'd ask is a quick five-minute clip of the crew hanging out in the galley :)

(Those that is of course a big, if. Can't stop the signal and all. )

This is not entirely true ;-) You can now look forward to re-watching the DVD set, then re-watching Serenity, then re-watching ....

I doubt that anyone here will argue when I say it just gets better each time you go through it. In addition, if you have only gone through once, you are missing a lot. The shinyiest thing about the series and the movie is the unbelievable attention to detail and subtlety. Every time you watch them, you see something you missed the first N times through.

I still would go live on the ship in a heartbeat, TallGuyMe! I'd love to go out into the black on that shiny ship with Mal and the crew.

I've never felt like that about a show before. And never will again, I'd wager.

Welcome home, TallGuyMe... it's a double edged sword, this wonderful 'verse. We have the show and we cope with the loss of the show. But being here is a help, I hope for you as much as it's been for me. These folks here help me cope til I get Mal back.

I hand out browncoats to new folks.. granted they're only virtual browncoats, but I hope you'll be as proud to wear yours as I am to wear mine.

*hands TallGuyMe a browncoat and gear*

There ought to be some folks who will come along and offer you some food, FloralBunny gets the best strawberries.. mmmmm.

The only way I know to really get our beloved crew back is to convert folks and those folks will love our crew as much as us, then maybe there will be a sequel, so let all those you care about know about Firefly. Cuz I want more, and I know you do to.

Talk often, we love to yack.

Hey, TallGuyMe, that sounds awefully familiar. But I found that the episodes have an incredible replay value - I sometimes find myself watching the same chapter of an episode up to 3 times because it's just so cool.

Like so many others here, I agree with you 100% - those little moments are what made us fall in love with these people and want to spend time with them, and it's those moments that make us miss them now - as well as the great story, fantastic acting and scripting, and the fresh feel of the 'verse!

I too share your Wash pain. It made the ending of the film so much more effective, but it hurt like hell, and still does....

Reading the comics will definitely satisfy some of your Firefly hunger. Also, there are going to be more comics coming from Dark Horse in the future (ie- later THIS YEAR) and will be once again be written by Joss Whedon and Brett Matthews (he wrote "Heart of Gold" and co-wrote the 3 issue mini-series), and there are probably going to be two more Firefly novels.

Also, check out the two podcasts called Firefly Talk and the other one called The Signal.

Finally, there's also an unfilmed Firefly script on this website that would have been the 15th episode.

For the script go here: http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=45

What a bonanza! Loads and loads of just-picked strawberries. Heavy cream for 'em. More fruits and veggies. Rosemary here, too. A case of Mudder's Milk. That case of Mr. Pibb which was requested by the SLiTHER fans...

As for the 'possum for those fans -- I had offered to get either free-range or factory-farmed and got no response, so we'll be skippin' the 'possum, though that's an activity more easily performed with rope or stones.

TGM, I see FM has issued your virtual coat, but I fear we'll have to find an extra-long bunk. You're taller than Jayne, and he fills his from end to end.

Yep, our little ship is home. The more you watch it, the homier it gets. Spread the enjoyment to your friends, family, whoever might enjoy it. The more the merrier.

To recap (and expand on) the others' advise, TALLGUYME:

1: The "R. Tam sessions". The page for them on Wikipedia even has a couple of links to places where you can download the full thing (do that before you read, though, it'll probably be shinier!). You simply MUST watch these. They... I... shiny. In a disturbing, depressing sort of way. But awesome.

2: The "Serenity" three-part comic miniseries from Dark Horse - it's got two formats: the first is the original, single-chapter comics (now in second printings, woot!), each of the three chapters comes in three variant covers, too, so they're all... collectable-like (my collection has River, Kaylee and Inara. I kinda want the Zoe one, though, too, and the Wash one. The Wash one has an awesome picture, and Zoe... Zoe just rocks, y'know? But I would not trade the River and especially Kaylee ones for the world. They're beautiful, and really capture the characters, especially Kaylee's!). The other format is as a graphic novel, called "Serenity: Those Left Behind", if I recall... you can find it on Amazon. The comic miniseries bridges the gap between the movie and the TV series. Meaning, live Wash, baby! Plus, as I recall, it explained what happened to the Hands of Blue guys.

3: Serenity novelization. I know. Not as good as the movie. But it's better than nothing!

4: Other Firefly/Serenity novels coming. I recall there being at least three or four licensed, though when they'd take place I have no idea; they aren't "canon" in that Joss isn't overseeing their writing, though (same with the Serenity novelization, though that one's based on the movie script, so it does follow a Joss plot, at least), so careful abou where you set your expectations. :P

5: Serenity Visual Companion. Very shiny book.

6: Now, what was it you said, now... you wanted to jump aboard the ship? Did you, now? Well, might wanna check out the Serenity Roleplaying Game, then, Browncoat! It literally allows you to join the crew or create your own, and play in the world. Only prob is you technically have to have at least one or two other people to play. I'm looking forward to testing it out myself. I just bought the rulebook (btw, if you buy the stuff from links from the main page of FireflyFans.net, you help support the site). Best part is, Joss was at very least consulted on the RPG. I don't know by how much, but he was involved. Also, just glancing through, I can TELL the writer's a total Browncoat. He has the lingo down PAT. Even the phrase Big Damn Heroes makes an appearance, as I recall.

Then, of course, there's the new comic miniseries Serenity sequel coming from Dark Horse. ^_^

For people who would like their own Firefly, this is probably as close as we`re ever going to get.

You`ll need the Orbiter flight sim to get it to work, but at least its freeware.
