I recently came across this line from OiS again, and I cannot seem to get past it:

"I can't keep track of her when she's NOT incorporeally possessing a spaceship."

I really don't get it. "incorporeal" means: "without body" ("lacking a physical body or existing solely as a spirit"). So, what does Simon say, really?

"I can't keep track of her when she's NOT not in body possessing a spaceship."?

That don't make no sense. I think he really means:

"I can't keep track of her when she's NOT corporeally possessing a spaceship."

See, THAT statement makes sense to me. :) Maybe people think "incorporeal" (adj. "without body") is like "incorporate" (verb. "to form into a body; to combine"). Or maybe I just don't understand the whole sentence. :)

"Coporally possesing a spaceship" would mean sitting at the helm, in her normal body, controlling the ship (more or less). She's clearly incoporeal, as she has supposedly lost her body, while her intellect has fused with the ship.

SLIP

He's essentially saying 'hey, I can't keep track of River when she's her normal self, let alone when she's floating around possessing spaceships'. It's just a sarcastic little joke. The idea that she has suddenly become a spirit inhabiting a ship is of course ridiculous, but it messes with Early's head. And who can deny the girl a little fun?

America loves a winner!

On a side note, how many thought that River really HAD become the ship? If only for a fraction of a moment, did you consider... " ok, what's all this about ? Can she REALLY do that ? ". The thought had entered my mind, until Simon's hi-larious line.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Yep, I thought she had "become" the ship. then I thought she must have found a place in Serenity where she could see and hear everything, and be near the main intercom, so she could use it to speak to individual people..... it never occured to me that she was in the guys ship.

I really thought she had become the ship. :) *blush* Well, at least I seriously considered it. I mean, who knows what she's capable of? In my defense, Early thought the same.

RESE

I agree with slip wholeheartedly. Simon is reacting as a big brother here, the brother that had to endure many hours stuck in the back seat with a whiny sister -- "she's on my side again, she's touching me, she's looking at me!"Simon is being a smartass to Early -- which is very brave of him, I think. Early would have killed him without blinking, and Simon is giving him backchat. This is one of my favorite scenes, actually.

Sorry your brain hurts, asarian. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I just love the moment when you can see that Early's finally beginning to slip...

River?
River?

... Serenity?

Yeah, I honestly thought "okaay..she really is, isn't she?" I thought so until finally seeing her in the ship, when we find out, along with Early that she's not in his mind, she's, "on my gorram ship!"

And I really loved Early's finally beginning to crack and go along with because he's scared.

I love how gorram brave Simon is. I mean, he's a civilian, right? He went to high school in a nice neighbourhood, he went to med school on a core planet, he probably hasn't been in a fistfight since grade school. He's probably been and taught and rewarded all his life to comply with authority figures and not make waves. But there he is, mouthing off to cold-blooded killers and physically attacking them to save his sister, even after he gets shot.

As Mal says, he ain't weak.

I know what you mean and that's another reason why I like Simon so much. He's so uptight and proper most of the season, and then you see him being all snarky to some guy who could easily hurt him badly (as he does) if not kill him.

Very shiny...

And that's a very valid characterization. Uptight and proper people can very easily get snarky when put in unfamiliar situations.

What's more, uptight and proper can often *seem* snarky in certain situations, even if snarkiness wasn't the intent. Think about Jaynestown, where Simon gets in a heap o'trouble by referring to a man as "sir".

I wasn't sure. She was so convincing though that I was ready to fall for it. Simon's line isn't what told me she hadn't though. Just cause he doesn't think it's possible dosn't mean it she didn't. I figureds it out when she was talking to Mal. "I'm very close to him. He doesn't even see it." That's the line that revealed the truth to me.

I also like that line from Simon. And Early's reaction. "You people are all crazy" But I wasn't overly surprised by it. He isn't the tough guy but throughout the show, when he's backed in a bad situation he doesn't just cower and cry. He doesn't always know what to do but he always seems to be in control of himself.
