You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

You know, if I had my way, Firefly/Serenity novels would be coming out in droves. I think that (with the right person writing them) novels would be an ideal way to continue telling stories in the 'verse. They can be more in-depth than most other things, up to and including comics, and they're very cost-effective. Of course what we all really want to see is a continuing series or more movies, but I'd also really like to see more books. Even if it was just to keep me from going insane waiting for something on the screen, I'd love to see more books. Anyone agree?

Moving on the the novelization of Serenity; I just finished reading it and I thought it was great for fleshing a few things out (but wouldn't have been nearly as good a read if I hadn't seen the movie) and I'm wondering a few things. Like, can the backgrounds and thoughts and emotions be taken as canon? Joss must have approved the novel, even if he didn't write it, and all of it made perfect sense to me. What do y'all think?

i too was surprised that there arent more books. seems like an obvious thing to do. i heard somewhere that all the buffy/angel books are just written by fans and joss got them published. maybe we should try writing some!

about the serenity book i havnt read it yet, but i assume that its accurate... he must have had considerable input, cos its quite important to get thoughts and feelings right, isnt it? someone somewhere said that the books of the pilot 'serenity' not the bdm. is that right?

No, it's definitely the BDM. It starts with the opening scene from the pilot, the battle of Serenity, and has other references to episodes throughout, but it is definitely the BDM. It's a good read in a lot of ways; ties a few things together that otherwise might not make sense. A little more backstory (though not as much as I'd like) and things like that. I recomend it.

Maybe we should try writing books! But I'd still like to see what people a little closer to the creation of the show would write. Any stories that couldn't be told on the screen, say. There could be a novel of... of Book's diary; or Inara's! There could be episodes, just describing them out to do a job. I think Joss should write a few novels for us starving fans, but maybe we could write some ourselves if we were able. (I love to write, but I don't know if I could write convincingly in the 'verse. Maybe I'll try if I have the time sometime.)

Look for ScrewtheAlliance in the blue sun room.

He is a published StarTrek novelist and is currently on chapter 60something of his firefly book.

It's an excellent read of very high quality and available free to everyone in the 'verse.

Look out for River's harmonica, Wash 'wildfire', torturers from the past, bounty hunters and 'criminal mastermind' Simon Tam!

Seriously, if firefly novels were published this would be one of the first.

Shiny! I'll look for screwthealliance for sure!
Is there, uh, a place to get a composite of fanfic? I've tried to read some of the blue sun items, but they're all chopped into little bits and kind of hard to read that way.

Click on a user name and then near the bottom click 'view all bluesun items'.

You can then see all the fiction posted by that user. Save the list and keep coming back until you've read them all. Just keep an eye on which chapter you're on. It's anoying when you forget and have to mess around working out which ones you've read.

Very few authors put links to the next chapter on the bottom of their pieces so working from the 'full user lists' is probably the best way.

Here's a short list of fanfic that might plug the firefly shaped gap for a while:
StA (one shorter piece, and the mammoth piece in progress)
AMDobell( 3 or 4 good sized fics),
thesoapboxer(Antebellum - a work in progress),
2x2 (Work in progress Mal/Inara angst fic),
GeekUSA (writing a damned good second season episode at a time).

I thought the novel was pretty good. I enjoyed the movie more and was glad I had seen the movie first. I agree there should be more books....................way more

I have read the Serenity novel and I was disappointed. There were some interesting ideas - the connection between Mr. Universe and Wash, for example, but I didn't enjoy the book. I would love to see more novels published, but only if they do Firefly and Serenity justice. As for whether it counts as canon... I believe Joss said in an interview that he sort of looks the other way when it comes to the novel(s).

There are plans for Serenity novels. I'm prety sure DeCandido is working on one for a late spring early summer publication. I'd post a link but it's far too early for me to wrap my head around a search engine.

That's the one. I understand there are a few more in the works as well (by other authors) but this is looking to be the flagship release.

Per KRAD:

Quote:

The listing for Mirror Image is a placeholder for a new Serenity novel, but we're still waiting for final word from Joss on what direction the novels might take. About a dozen authors (including me) have submitted proposals for the two novels, but we've been in a holding pattern.

Joss himself told me at the Flanvention last weekend that he needs to see what the DVD sales are like, and that will have an impact on what the future of the franchise is generally -- including the novels.

So there will be two more Serenity novels -- it was part of the contract for the novelization -- but at this point the likelihood of a summer release is pretty much nonexistent.

As soon as there's news, I'll be sure to post it here.

I coulda sworn that he posted rather recently that they still haven't heard anything from the powers that be yet, but I couldn't find a link.

Well that's somewhat distressing. But we still have the comics to look forward to. Right?
