In Australia we pronounce the word "sixth"(6th) as it is spelled but every time I watch the formula one the English commentators always pronounce the word "sick-th". Is this an English pronunciation thing or are these guys just getting it wrong?

Does anyone know of any good sites for clearing up spelling, grammar and pronunciation questions?

I think its a dialect thing. Dont really want to call it an english thing cause that island has got more dialects then Jaynes got guns.

I pronounce sixth the way it's spelled and I'm a born and bred Scot.

Although I understand what you're saying because there's some regional accents and dialects within the UK that I have trouble understanding, and there are people who say that about the Scots accent too.

Hope that helps.

I don't care what you believe in, just believe in it.

I'm from Berkshire in the UK. I've just sat here for a few seconds saying "sixth" out loud to see how I pronounce it..and I'm a sick-th.

I've just got my husband to count from first to seventh (without telling him why), and he's a sick-th too.

Not sure if that helps?

Calhoun, I'm afraid I am one of those English folks that say 'sick-th' as you wrote it. Don't know why as I don't really have that much of an accent, my mother was very firm with me when I was little to ensure that I spoke clearly! But I guess it is a little to do with regional variation and personal interpretation.

So whats the deal? Why do you guys pronounce it like that?

Is that the correct pronunciation where you're from or is it just some bad habit you've picked up?

Can you force yourself to say it like it is spelled? or is there some sort of genetic impediment to correct pronunciation?

As you can tell for some obscure reason I am intrigued..
