Gosse happens!

As a person with two websites of my own, sometimes a server just has a hiccup and takes things down for a while.

While I'm thinking of it, I am also concerned that when I click on frakingalactica.net (to see if Haken has had time to get it back up again), I get a "domain expired" notice. I'm tempted to renew it just to keep it safe for him. But then he'll think I stole it.

Yes, sad hours they were.

I'm glad we're back up. I've had my site go down for hours before too, sometimes you just can't help it. I'm willing to bet there was some kind of upgrade going on.

Just to make sure, I ask anyone that can afford to please donate to the site.

That explains it. I just logged on for the first time in 3 days (must have been just after the site came back) to see that no one had responded to anything in the past day.

I was wondering where everyone went.

It's the first time this month I've noticved it down for so long. Think about the traffic to the site. I'm surprised at how well it holds up. Haken does a great job doing this on his own and out of his pocket.

This is probably one site that would hold up to the webmasters' worst fear: digg effect.

I got a site running on my box (several subdomains), and here's the numbers:

Andrew (the DMZ):
uptime 242 days, 17:20

Xander (the web server box):
uptime 241 days, 57 mins

There uptime has to do with one main factor: OpenBSD. You gotta love the stability of OpenBSD

It's not the Windows box. And for the record, FFF.NET in the last 4+ years have only been down twice. First time was because of software upgrade. Second time was because of hardware failure.

As for yesterday, the entire building lost power because of electrical work. I should have posted a notice more in advance, but simply forgot it was yesterday.

Sorry to contradict you, but from my perspective this just isn't true.

First off, even within the last couple months there has been several occurences of just the DNS lookup timing out straight after a successful page load and 10 mins+ later, it works.

Secondly, within the last month there has been more than just a handle full of days where I couldn't load the page; errors kept popping up.

So, when I see, deadlock error, ODBC erros, IIS errors, etc, that's the issue of M$ tech not able to withstand the load and/or failing altogether ie scalability issues.

Thus, in all seriousness, with how successful this site has become, I think its time for a OS with less overhead and/or some more powerful hardware and/or a fatter pipe.

To all those people that think that I'm pooping on Haken and this site, I'm not. I'm just pointing out the facts as I see them. Basically, I'm not going to cheerleader for something when I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that things can be improved.

Any OS is only as stable as the techs maintaining it. Get a neophyte administering an OpenBSD box, and it doesn't matter how rock-solid the kernel: Things Get Ugly.

The primary problem I see with Windows is that it's marketed itself as user-friendly and "id10tproof" so very very well that some end users think that they can actually host a site off of their home PC and everything'll be shiny. They seem surprised (or subdued) when asked how they'll handle a DDOS attempt, or which ports they'll close. Too many pushbutton server admins running about...

"Contrary to popular belief, Unix is user friendly. It just happens to be selective about who it makes friends with."

Glad to see FFF.net back among the living!!

Indeed. But, when I talk to *nix users about things related to sys/network-admin, web programming, etc, they are very much more knoledgeable than there Windows counterparts. But, I don't think that this is really the issue here.

If it was the issue, then this site would be down for the most part because it gets so much bloody traffic. IMO, the problem is with the underlieing tech. I reference the ODBC, etc issues that occur regularly here. The tech is just not built to handle load.

I'm certain that some tuning of the software and code could mitigate some of the issues. But, since the underlying tech is flawed, that will only go so far.

And this is how all those nasty virii get around as well. Too many exploits available for IIS, MS SQL, etc. Anyone remember when the internet slowed down so much that ATM's stopped working for a bit. Yup, that was a vulnerability in MS SQL that made that all possible. That and its a very wide spread program.
