Hi All,

I stumbled across this Firefly poll. It's interesting to think about. I had such a hard time trying to replace the cast with famous movie stars.

"If Firefly was turned into a movie who would you cast (other than the current players)?"

[EDIT: Old link was deleted. Too many scary pop ups]

Here are some results so far:

Almost Human's Casting
Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds - Rob Lowe
River Tam - Winona Ryder
Simon Tam - Jared Leto
Book, 'The Shepherd' - Samuel L. Jackson
Inara - Salma Hayek
Jayne - Kurt Russell
Kaylee - Majandra Delfino
Wash - Ethan Hawke
Zoë - Michelle Rodriguez

Leigh Guyette's Casting (Boonton, NJ USA)
Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds - Brendan Fraser
River Tam - Michelle Trachectenburg (Dawn from Buffy)
Simon Tam - Tobey McGuire
Book, 'The Shepherd' - Morgan Freeman
Inara - Lucy Liu
Jayne - Hugh Jackman
Kaylee - Allison Hannigan
Wash - Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Zoë - Jennifer Garner

You can vote here: http://members.fortunecity.com/firefly2002/ffpollmovie.html
There is an annoying pop up that tries to get you to install a browser, but I just clicked CANCEL.

ENJOY

I picked:

Mal= Will Smith
River = Michelle Trachtenburg
Simon = Matt Damon
Book = Tommmy Lee Jones
Inara = Salma Hayek
Jayne = Mr. T
Kaylee = Britany Spears
Wash = Owen Wilson
Zoe = Jennifer Garner

I'm way off, I know it. The truth is, the original cast members really can't be replaced.

It would be sacrilege to talk of replacing the current people.

The only thing I can think of would be the crazy seeming girl from that “I’ll never tell” movie, I think it was called “Don’t say a word” Is a good fit for River, so whoever played her could likely do River well.

It's not sacrilege, it's speculation Chris.

I picked:
Denzel Washington for Mal
I forget for Inara... could have been Gwyneth Paltrow
John Cleese for Book
I forget for River and I forget for Simon
Christopher Reeve for Jayne ha ha ha
Mike Meyers for Wash
Neve Campbell for Zoe

Have a beer and relax, bub. Consider this an excercise in futility.

We ALL know the current actors are PERFECT.

It's so hard to do, I find it a challenge. The cast of Firefly have defined their characters so absolutely. Still, it's kind of fun to try.

What if Queen Latifa played Zoe?

Mal -- Harrison Ford. Nobody else can do the pissed-off look as well as Nathan.

Queen Latifah? Granted, she is very talented and funny, but would not look quite as good in those painted-on jeans that Zoe prefers.

I agree with you completely. What if Harrison Ford played Mal and Madonna played Inara? That's better, age wise.

Can Madonna act?

Eh...not so much. She's a bit whiny for my tastes, and she's not as...I dunno, classy as I generally like my Inaras to be. Harrison Ford would make a good Mal, though. Somewhere in another thread it was said that Mal and Han Solo would, if they fought, find out they were long-lost brothers or something; I agree whole-heartedly with that theory.

I think they would be perfect Father-Son characters. I mean, we're talking about a 30-year age difference. Nathan was born in March, 1971. Harrison was born July, 1942.

Could they even be considered as equal replacements?

Here's a Succatash Prediction:

Nathon Fillion will one day star as Harrison Ford in the autobiography entitled, "He was a Replicant After All."

Oh, it's coming, trust me.

I spent way to much time on this, but here is my list possibles:

Jayne -Ice Tea/Russell Crowe/ Vin Diesel
MAl- James Morrison/Sean Bean/Christian Bale
Inara- Catherine Zeta Jones/ Elizabeth Hurley Lara Flynn Boyle

River-Natlie Portman-- maybe..not so much
simon-Orlando bloom/Joaquin Phoenix
Book-Ben Kingsley/Ed Harris
Wash - Brendon Fraser/ Owen Wilson
Zoe- Carrie-ann Moss/Michell Yeoh
Kaylee- Alysson Hannigan/Heather Graham

Hugh Jackman fits as Mal,Jayne and Wash and a few more ways that I will not mention.

River: The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds, given adequate vacuuming systems.
Mal: See, morbid and creep-ifying I got no problem with, long as she does it quiet-like.

I agree entirely. But more than that I really doubt it's going to be an "all-star cast". In fact, I don't think it will be an "any star cast". I wouldn't be surprised if none of the current cast were replaced at all.

Why? Because Joss has been burned by the industry far too many times. And I really doubt he'll do the movie unless he gets cast approval. Since Joss will choose the cast, he'll pick the existing cast. If one or two members can't make it, I suspect he won't even re-cast them. He'll just write the character out and replace them with a new character. In addition, I've read interviews with the Mutant Enemy staff concerning re-casting. They laughed at the thought, I suspect it's sacrilege to them and I don't see it happening. Further, doing the movie without any "big stars" will drop the budget significantly.

My prediction: If there are going to be any "Stars" in the Firefly movie, they'll be cast as Big Bad's that haven't been previously introduced. Big stars often love a chance to play the bad guy.

Oh that was fun, but incredibly hard to do!

My picks are:

Mal - Ray Liotta
River - Tina Majorino (girl from Waterworld)
Simon - Joaquin Phoenix
Book - Sidney Poitier
Inara - Angelina Jolie
Jayne - Vin Diesel
Kaylee - Kate Hudson
Wash - Seth Green
Zoe - Halle Berry (I don't like this pick I made at all. Gina Torres just IS Zoe and I couldn't think of anyone comparable, or at least near enough in age to Seth Green. Hehe)

Okay,,, here goes

Mal = Richard Simmons (nods to Succatash for casting genius)
River = Cher
Simon = Neil Patrick Harris
Book = Abe Vigoda
Inara = Rhea Perlman
Jayne = Wallace Shawn
Kaylee = Fran Drescher
Wash = Richard Dreyfus
Zoe = Bret Butler

I think this would make for a very interesting cast.

Nope. Sorry guys, I tried. I really did. But I just can't see anyone but the original actors doing those characters. Just by being different people they would change the parts too much.

The speculation can be fun, but when it come down to picking the people for each part none of them could do our characters. All I get is 'so and so could come close to Mal, whozits might be okay for Kaylee, that guy could play a Jayne-ish character.' But that's as close as I come and it's just not good enough. I'm spoiled and stubborn and only our actors can do our characters right. And they so deserve to be right. I'll just have to have fun reading all your choices. :)

This is fun!

Perhaps after Enterprise flops over at Star Trek, Inc. they can remake the original series into a new weekly series. Berman and Co. can blend actual episode remakes with original scripts and recast Kirk, Spock, McCoy, et al with hot young Hollywood up and comers.

Can't wait for all of the old Klingons of the '60s to finally look like the Klingons of the '80s & '90s!

Keep the Shiny side up

Since this is fantasy, I picked a fantasy cast without regard to current age or plane of existence. Assume these folks were available at the appropriate ages.

Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds – Gregory Peck (age 35)
River Tam – Mia Farrow (age 17)
Simon Tam – James Dean (age 23)
Book, 'The Shepherd' - Spencer Tracy (age 50)
Inara – Audrey Hepburn (age 25)
Jayne – Jack Palance (age 35)
Kaylee – Meg Ryan (age 20)
Wash – Cary Grant (age 30)
Zoë - Raquel Welch (age 30)

Geezer, that was pretty cool. Why didn't I think of that? I stuck with how I'd cast them today. It was pretty fun.

Okay, I have to edit this. My choices weren't quite right. Chow Yun Fat isn't young enough to play Simon, but he MUST be in my film! lol.

Captain Mal Reynolds: Chow Yun Fat
River Tam: Clea Duvall
Dr. Simon Tam: Edward Norton
Shepherd Book: Mandy Patinkin
Inarra Serra: Salma Hayek
Jayne Cobb: Johnny Depp
Kaylee Frye: Joan Cusak
Wash Warren: Matthew Perry
Zoe Warren: Sigourney Weaver

I'm still not happy with my choice of Zoe, but I like this River choice much better. I still like the idea of an older woman paired with a much younger man. You so rarely see that in the movies.

Oh well, here´s my list again:

Mal - Ewan McGregor (Mischief incarnate! He could have pulled it off. Think less Obi Wan and more "Down with love")
Zoe - Angelina Jolie (Queen of kick ass-ed-ness, need I say more?)
Wash - Tobey Maguire (Can be both funny and wimpy at the same time. Great underdog.)
Book - Alan Rickman (If I ever cast a movie/TV show I’d cast him as something based on his sheriff of Nottingham alone. Brilliant actor.)
Kaylee - Sandra Bullock (Had the hardest time with this casting. Picked Sandra for her charm and warmth.)
Inara - Julia Ormond (A younger Julia... Vulnerable and classy at the same time.)
Simon - Alexis Denisof / Colin Firth (Can’t think of any better snobs at the moment.)
River - Milla Jovovich (Fifth Element... she’s got that jabberwocky part down REAL good.)
Jayne - Hugh Jackman (Has the strength and sarcasm to be a runner up.) / Dennis Leary (Just for the attitude.)
