I was just thinking about taking a picture of me with my BRAND NEW, ULTRA-SHINY BROWNCOAT SHIRT from BlueMoon, my G36 BB gun, a cocky look on my face and a cigarette hanging from the corner of my mouth.
And then it hit me. Cigarettes? Those kill you!
No, seriously, I never noticed that there aren't any cigarettes in Firefly. Not that I think they'd be a great addition.
I can't recall anyone smoking in the 'verse... hm, maybe Papa Tam smoking a pipe in the flashback at the beginning of safe? I don't think so...

No great yet undiscovered clue as to the shadowy past of people, but I thought I'd mention it.
Although it probably has been mentioned before, but there's so many new people...

The Train Job. I'm pretty sure the sheriff smokes and offers one to a prisoner, mostly because it's pointed out in the commentary.

If you remember how keen and amazed the crew were by Book's gift and fruits and veg, it's clear plants are at a premium. It seems likely that utilising all the space, soil and water that a tobacco plant would need would be considered unnecessary or at best a luxury.

Filthy habit anyway.

Does Jayne smoking cigars count?

*****
Mal:We're still flying.
Simon: That's not much.
Mal: It's enough.

Yup, lotta Cigar smokin' going on. That "smokie treat" in the train job looked like one of them little filtered cigars also. What's the brand for those? Some thing like More I think and then those little Swicher Sweets. Jayne, Mal and Book have all had a stogie at one point or another. I think there was some smokinin' going on in the backround at the Eavesdown Dock in the pilot.

Glad to hear you like the shirt also!

CYBERSNARK

In the BDM, Jayne gives Book a box of Cubans. We see the Shepherd smoking part of one, then Jayne takes them back after the massacre.

One thing SF shows tend to forget: starships are closed atmospheres, so it makes sense that there'd be no smoking aboard. Smoke on a spaceship = environmental system overload. Air scrubbers go offline, you die gasping. Not to mention that you'd be poisoning everyone else on the crew (Simon, River, Kaylee, and likely even Zoe might take exception to that).

You light that up, you better go outside.

The Serenity RPG game makes mention of cigarettes in the fascion that people can be addictid to them. Also I think Joss calls the cigarette in the Train Job a cigarette, but it does look alot like one of them there fancy miniciggars.
Even though fruit and vegetables are hard to get in space, I think that tobaco could be easier to save since its dried and most likely wrapped up. Also, addicts are a cunning race, they will get there smokes no matter how hard it is ;)

I always got the impression that the sheriff was smoking the Pascalin medicine I'm probably wrong though, but they did say that every ounce of the medicine was stolen and tobacco related things are usually measured in ounces.

Yes, we see people smoking in the 'verse, and I can see it as a luxury, but tobacco takes the right soil and atmospheric conditions to grow.

It would definately be even more of a luxury crop than it currently is today.
