Call out to anyone who can help!

I'm a pretty green newbie, haven't even seen all of the show yet. But I've started a fanfic and I've hit a snag.

I saw Shindig and I noticed there was a mention of slavery. At the big party, one of the older gentlemen steps in on Kaylee's behalf and says something about a dozen slaves taking a week to get one of the rich girls into her dress, but only a second for a boy to get her out of it. Something close to that anyway.

I was wondering if there was any more about slavery in the 'verse. My main character is a slave/former slave and I wanted to know if slavery is something only practiced on the outer planets or if they have it right into the core? Is it regulated by the Alliance or more or less ignored? Are the slaves captured by slavers or are there "slave colonies" ?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Mine is an evil sugar high laugh! Bwahahahaha!

It is illegal in the verse to keep slaves and indentured servants, but that doesnt stop people outside the core to do it. Slaves are used heavily by some mining corperations and on rimworlds were inexpensive manpower is needed. If you get your hands on the Serenity RPG book there is some info there. Also see the Train Job, Shindig and Jaynestown for references on slavery and peoples attitudes on it.

You can’t stop the Signal.

I've got the RPG Book and I'll look for more info for you tomorrow - but from what I remember off the top of my head the Alliance is not involved with the trade and technically it's illegal. That said, there's terraforming crews and what not that need warm bodies and they tend to turn a blind eye because they don't always have the manpower to enforce their edicts out on the Rim.

The bar brawl scene in the beginning of Shindig is caused by Mal stealing money from a slave trader. Slaves for terra-forming crews. No extra rations necessary.

A minor item... I noticed in the Serenity pilot that as Mal & crew walk into Badger's office, he's checking the teeth of a white girl -- like she's a horse. Thought it was intriguing.

In Jayntown when Inara first meets the father of the young man she is there to companion she adresses him a "Magistrate Higgins" in which he replies " Mr Higgins please. I only make people I own use my title."

a pretty good sign of slavery and that the abuse of ppl is alive and well in the future verse.

DOCSLADE

And don't forget the distinction between slaves and indentured servants - the Mudders on Higgins' Moon were the latter. People who voluntarily sell themselves to an employer (owner!) for a fixed length of time in return for board/upkeen. This is what Inara pretended Mal was when she rescued him in "The Train Job", threatening him with an additional six months of ownership for attempting to escape.

Still not a good thing, but distinct from slavery.

I know some of the mudders on Higgins moon were old and some may have had bad teeth. But I never noticed that any were servants in dentures.

Sorry, little joke on my part.

ZISKER

Here you are, straight from the RPG Book, Pg 200:

The Here and Now:

[…] The Alliance does not fully control everything within its far-flung territory. In reality, the Alliance only has full control over the Core planets […] the cracks in the system are large enough to fly a Firefly through. Take slavery, for example. Slavery is outlawed by the Alliance government, but it’s an open secret that terraforming companies, mine owners and the wealthy on the Rim regularly use slave labor in their operations, and pay big sums for human cargo. Every so often, the Alliance will bust one of these owners and free the slaves – that always looks good on the nightly news. But then it’s back to business as usual. Same with indentured servants. That’s not legal either, but most folk on the Border planets accept indentured servitude as a way of life. If you’re desperate for the extra credits and you’ve got nothing else to offer up as collateral except yourself, then that’s what you do. Dohn ma?

I hope that helps

Just an fyi: you may want to look over on the Virtual Season site and see what they have written. They make a number of mentions of slavers and slavery and I would bet my last shiny pinny that GWEK and his team have done their homework.

From the episode "The Big Stick":
"FIVE SLAVER SHIPS cut their way through space, looking sinister and gothic. The DUNGEON SHIP is five times Serenity’s size, slow, laden, as if weighed down by the many slaves it carries."

From the first episode "The Perfect Sunset":
"The HUB is a massive, chaotic swap meet, practically the size of a football field. It seems that anything can be had here, for the right price. Illegal arms, small vehicles, livestock, even slaves are being bought, sold and auctioned by the crowd."

Just an historical note here from an American Studies major. In Colonial times if you didn't have money for the passage to America you could indenture yourself and agree to serve for 7 years in exchange for passage, room and board.

It was a way both unskilled and skilled laborers could get from the counryside of Europe to America.

Many with an education or trades ended up settling in the cities and being successful. Those with little or no education usually ended up on the frontier where land was cheap or free after their 7 years were up.

BTW Ben Franklin indentured himself in order to learn the printing trade. He did runaway from Boston to Philadelphia before his indenture was up.

Scrappie is a disease that appeared in the sheep herds of Britain in the 1970's. It was called scrappie after the nature of the illness. Scrappie causes sick sheep to rub up against things. Scrappie also caused the brain to become sponge-like and resulted in death.

I occasionally rub against things, but I sure hope my brain didn't become sponge-bob yet.
Oh, crap.
