I dont know what to start a newbie with, ask them to watch the entire series first (like I did) and then graduate to Serenity, or get them hooked on the movie and then say "well if you liked that have I got somethin for ya!" By the way the person i am trying to "convert" is very skeptical about the whole thing because he thinks I have gone mad or joined a cult or something because of the devotion I show.

"And I think calling him that is an insult to the psychotic lowlife community."

Firefly. Hands down. How much would it have sucked to know that Wash was a dead man from the get go or that River could whip everyone's ass in two seconds flat?

Well first off we've stopped calling it a cult after the incident in 04 (). That being said starting with the series makes the most sense. After that you get the comics and then the movie. Simple!
Just show him the pilot! That's it! After that he'll have to see the rest.

The pilot episode of 'Firefly' really has to go first, because of those misdirections :
where you think Simon might be evil
where you don't know there will be a girl in the cryo box
where you think Kaylee died....
these things are really something if you were blessed to see that unspoiled
(Fox of course ran that episode last, so no one who saw it on TV got to enjoy that...)

whenever I am trying to make a few person a fan, I always start with the pilot.

Well, I watched just the pilot with a friend, and he wasn't convinced. But when he continued to watch (because I gave the DVD box to him as a gift), he liked it more and more.
I guess it's a real dilemma: The movie "delivers" faster, while chronological viewing might not be a bad idea.
I try to get people hooked on Firefly, and if they are really hesitant, I'll give them the movie.
They can hate themselves for not listening to me in the first place later.

I'd say either/or. However, it truely would suck to know that two main characters died in the movie, then having to go back and watch the series.

Yeah, I agree, but I also think it depends on the person you're trying to convert.

For example, I have these two friends that I took (forced) to go see Serenity with me opening weekend. One of them was quite convinced, and so I loaned him the TV show. Instant Browncoat. However, the other one, while he really liked the movie, just didn't want to see the show. So I killed him (Just kidding...(or am I?)). You see, I know my friends, and what they like, and I knew that "Hey, guys, let's sit down and watch this TV show" might not work.

Oh, and Copilot, I fixed you're typo for you, just so you know.

After the pilot, I just had to watch the rest, and then had to see the film.

That's the order they were conceived in, and all the arcs begin -- at the beginning. Why spoil the surprises?

Start with the pilot alone; make no threats about showing the whole series.

Maybe even make your victim beg to see the next Ep.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Well, I got hooked by the movie first, so I know it works, but I think it's best to see everything in order. I'm hooking a friend of mine right now and I started her on the episodes. We got through the pilot and the Train Job today and she is mad, mad obsessed already. And I loved her reaction when Mal said "Kaylee's dead." She turned to me with her eyes all wide and said "Kaylee died? No she didn't!... She didn't, did she? Is she dead?" and she's watching the Shepard slow-mo scene and saying "No, no way. She is not dead! Is she really dead?" So once Simon got to the bottom of the stairs I just started laughing and said "No, she's too pretty to die!" and then she waved from the screen and there was just a sigh of relief... It was so much fun! If you see the movie first, well, obviously she lives through it. Not as fun.

I watched the BDM first when I got into Firefly, and ive always felt I would rather have gotten into the series first. After that with all the people ive introduced ive been carefull to always show them the pilot to the series first, works like a charm.

Firefly, but make sure to show them both Serenity and The Train Job at once, so they gets more of the humor and Mal one-liners ("Were there space monkeys? Some evil space monkeys got loose?") As for the comic, that's not a necessity, unless he's already into comics like I was. I'd go firefly -> serenity -> misc (comics, commentaries, etc)

Thank you very much fellow browncoats, I will show him the Series first then the BDM. This will be the procedure for all new recruits.

It depends on the newbie's personality. Watching the movie was better for me because I like dark-and-twisted SF. Watching the series was better for my brother because he's more of an "up" person. Though if possible use the series due to those spoilers.... but it's better to make an honest assessment of a person's character and create a new Browncoat than for them not to get hooked.
