Just a gal out on the rim writing tales.

I just read the "Firefly Fanfiction: What Are Your Pet-Peeves?" thread and realized that it would be helpful for many writers to have access to competent editing and feedback, pre-posting.

I'd like to suggest that we somehow create a roster of volunteers willing to provide Beta services, perhaps sub-divided into categories as to the sort of fics one is willing to edit. For example, if you have editing skills but loathe Jaylee, I probably won't ask you to beta my work.

For example: (Author Name) - offering beta for general canon-based fics, no slash. One week turn-around.

Would any of you folks who feel so strongly about correct punctuation, spelling, etc., care to offer your skill and knowledge to the community at large? This could sure help to improve and elevate the quality of fanfic as an artform. Perhaps we can even get a section set up under "Writers Resources" for such a roster.

Just a helpful suggestion.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

That's a good idea. I'd be happy to offer editing skills, especially where grammar and spelling are concerned. Don't know if I'd have pairing limitations, though there are a few (as I mentioned) that have to be really convincing for me to enjoy them. I would also be editing readability, i.e. sentances that read a bit off or didn't have good rhythm, I would correct. Also repeated words and the like. (you know what I mean; when the same word appears 3-5 times in a paragraph. Not counting and or the.) Many might find me harsh. Still...

There would have to be quite a few volunteers to take up all the work

Oh, this is a really good idea. I would love to provide some help but since my native tongue isn't English, I'm not sure how good I'd be at catching mispelled words or grammar mistakes. :) But I like this idea.

Excellent Idea!

Ertia; Specializing in all forms of erotica and slashity goodness! I fear no pairing- except maybe Crowe/Badger... eww.
I can cater to the author's desires for grammar, spelling corrections while aiding with characterizations and dialogue faux pas.

But that's why such a roster with details like this would be such a great idea. I have a friend who reads my story and helps me with grammar and spelling, but doesn't know Firefly very well so can't comment on whether I got the voices right. Sometimes you need different opinions as well, as to whether a plot device works.

Edit: Just posted this on the wrong thread! Moved it now!

Can I put my name down for someone who is happy to beta for any and all styles (including crossovers!), with pointing out plot holes and suggesting ways past writers' blocks being a speciality. Also good at catching problems with word flow. I'm going through a manic time at the moment so will not have a good rate of turn-over until August. After that I'd welcome lots! Send me your tired cliches, your poor choice of words, your huddled masses of pages! (Not that I've ever read anything on this site that was very bad!)

At the risk of sounding dumb, anyone know who is actually responsible for setting up categories and options for the site? I guess the correct term is Site Administrator, but I'm IT deficient.

I think it would be important for anyone voluntering as a beta to be realistic about how much work they take on at any given time and what sort of turn-around time they can offer. Few things are more frustrating than having written a piece and having it off in beta-limbo forever when what you want is to make it good and get it posted.

Come on people - here's a chance to mentor other writers, hone your own skills, possibly cultivate friendships with other Browncoats (it's worked for me) and improve the general level of FF fanfic. I know it's easier to stand on the sidelines and bitch than contribute to a solution, but we really can make this work.

I offer my humble services as a beta :) I have no restrictions, no boundaries... I am a writer of fanfiction and erotica so I'm pretty much anything goes.

A one week turn around sounds about right too. I used to be part of a fanfic 'mentoring program' that we old x-philes established back in the day, so I am more than experienced on all fronts of fanfiction. Feel free to give me a shout!

Sure, I'll volunteer. (get the reference? ) I'll do most stuff, but absolutley no slash, I just can't read the stuff, personally. Oh, and no Mal/River. I'd prefer post-BDM, but other stuff's good too. Don't care about graphic nature, cussing, etc.
I warn you though, I've been told by friends whose works/essays/etc I've proof-read in the past, I can be pretty harsh. Not mean harsh - I'm not gonna insult you personally or anything - but I do tend to spout some very Jayne-like "compliments" if I don't think the writing's up to scratch. Just don't take it personal if I do.

ZOID

hisgoodgirl, et al:

I'd like to volunteer my assistance as well.

I will correct punctuation and spelling, without changing the author's rhythm or voice, unless specifically asked to do that (meaning: no general editing, except by special request).

Many writers don't like it when someone else 'takes over' their work. The trick to editing, imo, is to remember that it's not your work, it's the author's work. Since it's virtually impossible to know exactly what another human has in her/his mind, making substantive changes to the work of another risks changing the work into something the author doesn't want.

So, punctuation and spelling. More, only upon specific request by the author, agreement to undertake the task by myself, and the express consent of the author to make changes. I can and will 'edit' any type of material, except for those involving 'universal indecencies' (to wit: sex with children, animals, et cetera).

An analogy: I don't have to like the pattern, color and cut of a shirt to be employed making sure the buttons are sewn on straight.

Thus, I will make sure your buttons are on straight. If you want help (re)designing your shirt, I can do that too -- without insulting your personal tastes in the process. Just realize that in many cases -- to mix metaphors -- too many cooks spoileth the broth.

I can punctuate/spell check circa two thousand words per day without difficulty, dependent upon my (paying) work schedule. (NB: What word count on the typical fanfic? The ones I've seen are in the 2K word range, or small multiples thereof.)

Anyone interested can message me through my Profile page ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/showprofile.asp?un=zoid).
and put me on any Writer's Resource page y'all get started. I'd be pleased to help...

Editorially,

zoid

P.S.
I'm a native Texan, so most Firefly-speak sounds like home to me. Chinese, on the other hand, I cannot help you with...

P.P.S.
To those who might think I'm not offering much more than a word processor's automated spell-check would provide, I have three words for you: there, their, they're. And anyone who lets M$ Word's grammar correction run rampant on their document gets all the gobbledygook they deserve...

Happy to beta!

I will check spelling, grammar and general literacy as well as continuity and characterisation.

Preferably not slash or cross-overs (sorry but it's just not my style.)

I have already agreed to beta for Arcadia and also proof-read for the stillflying project. Regardless, I will happily take on multiple fics/authors.

As a rule I'm looking at a 3-day turn around although I will frequently return quicker than this.

Great to see so many good folk have offered their editorial and beta assistance.

Just to let you know, I've cross posted to the FIREFLYFANS.NET Central forum asking the IT/Site Admin Gods if it might be possible to create a way for you helpful folk to post your info over at the writer's resources section. If life intervenes or you find yourself overloaded with requests, please be kind enough to let folks know.

Better Beta means better fanfic and there must be good karma for mentoring other writers, neh? Thanks for stepping up, folks!

Before you do so, though, you should know that a lot of times, the message that comes with the script is "We're running a little behind, so if you can offer feedback in the next 48 hours, that would be awesome!"

My first ever fanfic, back whern I was 17, was in the Highlander universe and it screamed Mary Sue, even though I didn't know what a Mary Sue was back then. I actually sent it to a Beta Reader instead of posting it. Of course, I only heard from them once to say the story wasn't "so bad but needed work" and never again. I think they got scared... my Mary Sue was VERY Mary Sue-ish, I'm afraid.

If you track down those links to Highlander x-overs, let me know. It was one of my favourite series and my first fandom!

Okay, done hyjacking this thread... sorry!

You go ahead and write a clown fic if you want Sameertia, so long as I don't have to read it!

But moving away from that creepifyin subject- I've a fanfic that I've started and I wanted a beta reader. So...should I just pick someone and send it to them, or what?

Quick stats:

Genre- Mix of humour, romance, drama and some action/adventure

Chapters- I dunno how many, probably quite a few but I've only written three and some other random scenes so far.

Pairings- Simon/Kaylee and Mal/Inara...no clowns

Time Period- A couple of months post-BDM

Synopsis- The crew of Serenity stuble upon a surprise in their cargo, one that will yet again pit them against the Alliance but not in a way you would think. (Warning: the plot is still in planning stages at certain points so I'm not quite sure how it will play out in the end.)

Anybody interested?

Morwen, I think your best bet is search through the volunteer Betas and choose one (close your eyes, point your finger, LOL) that accepts your kind of story/pairing/etc. Or if you're familiar with any of the names, choose them (as long as they don't put as restriction any of the elements of your story).

So, I guess that's it. Looking forward to seeing your story posted! There are not enough Post-BDM stories... and since I came into Firefly through the movie, those tend to be the ones I prefer since I can't just pretend the movie hasn't happened.

I'd love to volunteer. Kudos for starting this thread.

I'm Arcadia, aka Katie, and I'll read anything and everything, whatever pairing/rating/format you like (though my specialty is Mal/Inara fanfic, which is what I usually write when left to my own devices, and "lost episode" type fics). No filks, though. I can do spelling and grammar, characterization, and might not be able to restrain myself from pointing out things that don't make sense. I'm also here is you just need a soundboard for fic ideas, because that is great fun to me. It usually takes me two-plus days to respond to a request.

Will read any type of fic (het, slash, canon pairings, non-canon pairings), might not be so good at crossovers as I'm not familiar with most shows others cross Firefly with.

Can offer basic spelling/grammar assistance, characterization assistance, or plot bunnies! Usually turn around things pretty quickly (3 days or so).

BLUEEYEDBRIGADIER

Count me in on any beta reader list, HGG!

Honestly, I am willing to beta most any Firefly fanfic...regardless of pairing, content or time period:D

My turn around time? Hmm...that would be the unknown variable. I have done beta reading jobs in a matter of hours, so the author gets a 1-day turnaround...but there are a couple of beta jobs I still have going cuz of their length and complexity (my humblest apologies to reginaroadie and phaedra ). Really...I would strive to do a 48 hour turnaround unless I state otherwise to the fic's author. Best option for me as an efficient beta reader? Send me the stuff you want looked over in chunks (chapters, passages, etc). Makes things easier for everyone, I think;)

So..so sum up my point, here's the following info:

Author's Name: BlueEyedBrigadier (though I still haven't posted a fic yet, much to my chagrin)

Contact E-mail: z_wing@hotmail.com or general_iblis@yahoo.ca

Types of Fiction I'm Willing to Review: Any kind of Firefly fanfic that is possible...and maybe anyting that isn't (can only look )

Any content limitations?: Nothing really. Might not go for graphic rape scenes, but I will certainly take a shot at anything you're willing to throw at me

Services Offered: Grammar, spelling and punctuation repairs; script doctoring (though you have to watch out...I can get mighty wiggy with my tuning ); reasonable criticism of story points and facts that seem confusing, out of place or unsuitable for the fic (suitability based on how you present the fic to me...AU allows for a whole lot more leeway with altering things than fairly canonical); and development plot ideas, story scenes and dialogue.

Turnaround Time?: Reliant on fanfic's length. Short pieces (drabble, ficlet, etc)? Less than a day. A decent length story? 48 hours to 72 hours. Epic job on par with ScrewtheAlliance's Kaylee's Lament or The Treasure of Lei Fong Wu, reginaroadie's You Can't Go Home Again or Phaedra's The Pillow Book of Inara Serra? Probably at least a week, if not more.

So...that's my pitch. Hope I seem attractive to one of you fellow Browncoats needing a hand;)

I'd be happy to be a volunteer beta reader. I've done a lot of technical and scientific writing, and have many, many years experience grading student essays and papers. Never got into fan fic until Firefly, but have read a lot, and find the better the editing, the more enjoyable the fic. Will gladly do spelling, grammer and whatever asked for. I would prefer mostly canon pairings, though.

new to fanfic writing and need[ed] a bit of help picking up the lingo. (Didn't know what a Mary Sue was...)

She has probably picked it up by now but I know I had the same problem. In News of the Verse's page on fansites(under Introductory Materials)is a short glossary of terms that might be helpful to others that are in the same boat.

Thanks, Redhead. I did get my question cleared up awhile back. "News of the 'Verse" is a great resource, so kudos for bringing it to everyone's attention!

There are so many new fanfics coming out I'm having trouble reading all of them. Those of you who have been around awhile, is this normal as people hit vacation or are we experiencing some kind of fanfic explosion?

It could be because people are now on vacation. If you read ever fic that's posted, kudos to you! I couldn't even possibly try - even if I wanted to!:)

For awhile I was at least starting every fic (Some nicely warn me away so I don't waste my time. Others are not right for me for various reasons) but I am so overwhelmed by the amount at the end of last week I'm kind of afraid to start again Hard to believe but I have a REAL LIFE that I can't ignore.
