It struck me recently just how many of Firefly's memorable moments come at the very end of episodes, or near the end. It's a sure sign of the greatness of the writing and storytelling that so many of the episodes leave you almost breathless with the conclusion's poingancy, or stunned by some unexpected twist, or rolling on the floor.

I'll give a few examples. I'm sure you all can think of many more.

"We're still flyin'."
"That's not much."
"It's enough."

"I'm right there with ya!"

"Don't make no sense."

"Aw, hell, you'd'a just lied anyway."

"No, mei mei... time to wake up."

"I'm leaving."

"Well... here I am."

"Storm's getting worse."
"We'll pass through it soon enough."

Anybody have any favorite closing moments?

The ending to Objects in Space. I can't remember the exact lines right now (forgive me ) but I know it always leaves me with a warm fuzzy feeling.

"I'm having one of those things - a headache with pictures."

"Of course I'm right. And if I'm not, may we all be horribly crushed from above somehow."

"I knew you let her kiss you."
*whistles*

That was just the perfect ending for that episode. I laugh so hard every time...

The ending of the BDM. We see that ship we all love breaking through the storm, doing a barrel roll past the clouds, heading home, into the black, while the soaring strings of the background score lift her higher....

I get chills every time I see the first reveal of Serenity at the beginning of the movie, and I feel the first welling of tears (of pride? joy? love?) EVERY gorram time I get to the ending.

And then... "What was that?" takes that hard edge off the sadness, laughter through the tears and all that.

Though I have to admit, "I knew you let her kiss you!" makes me laugh every time!

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

"Permission to come aboard?"
"You know, you ain't quite right."
"It's the popular theory."

That's not the end end, but I'm betting that's what you were thinkin'. I love that scene.

Oh, what about "I can kill you with my brain."? That whole scene is one of my favorites, and I find it very memorable. I know it's not the last scene, but it's close. It's the last scene with Simon, River or Jayne that episode, anyway.

Well, I had a class recently and we read "The Poetics" by Aristotle, and one of the things he says is that in a truely well told narrative, all the energy and tensions and so on of the story are drawn together into a poignant focus site by the end, acting sort of like a magnet for the story. Given that Firefly is (EXTREMELY -- and I know I have many many many people to back me up on this) well written, it shoudln't be a huge surprise that when things all come together at the end, that's when you really get hit or wowed. Just a thought I had.

Good point, Shiny. And hey, if we can get support from Aristotle...I think we've got it made!
