I know its not completely kosher to bring up the subject, but everything I've read lately, including the other thread on Nathan's Moonlightrising Con appearance, sounds discouraging on the chances of a sequel or new series. Serenity only grossed 25M domestically, and took until February to get into the black on DVD sales. I know all the phrases about how the movie came out of the blue, and we have to just hold on, etc, but I'm worried that Firefly will go the way of Blake's 7. I also saw Gina Torres and Alan Tudyk on new shows. Someone please give me some realistic hope for more of my all time favorite show.

Look around darling there are new recruites every day! An canceled televsion show from four years ago has gazillion loyal fans. Every single person I have ever showed Firefly to has fallen maddly in love! Just share the 'verse with everyone you know and eventually we can get it back. Remember you can't stop the signal!

Hope is something that is hard to come by, have faith instead.

As for reasons to believe, the important one is that people keep on coming in. There is a semi-steady stream of people coming in, and that means that numbers are growing.

Universal is not full of idiots, if the numbers reach a certain amount the statistics will say that the movie has a such and such chance of making a certain profit, and they'll greenlight a new movie.

Of course that is only if the numbers reach that amount while everyone is still free enough to do a movie.

-

It's not insane. If you look at the sequels and remakes that seem to come out of nowhere you'll see that people are watching the numbers.

I second those emotions.. when Firefly was first cancelled, no one would have given you 20 cents for a bet that Serenity would ever get made... but guess what... well you know that story.

Sure it looks bleak. But bleak ain't never; it's just later... so have faith. I do, and hope too (cus I'm weird) that we will see her fly again... in time.

Remember that the original Star Trek was cancelled in 1968 and took till 1980 (81? can't remember right now) to become a movie. And this was well before the days of DVDs let alone VHS. I hope for a sequel because I don't think Joss is done telling the story. Patience is everything here.
Meanwhile, enjoy the Browncoat community...there's a lot to enjoy!
And try to see the BDM later this June on the big screen..

Thanks for the help, guys. I remember well the wait for another Star Trek. But there was an animated series, and the reruns showed every day at a time when there were limited channels and almost no cable. You had to watch Star Trek, and a huge fan base got hooked on a good show. We just don't have the same dynamic now. I would spend $1000 just to watch a new episode. And my small pocketbook is my only small control over this whole issue. I will be at the June 23rd showing in my part of the verse, and Iwill continue to enlist others into the pisspot, cowardly Independents. BTW, when are they going to start Firefly books on the shelves. I even witnessed an Andromeda book. Surely, if that show can attract enough support for a book...

I get feelings like that myself sometimes (ha, look at me, a fan for like 2 months and talking like I've been one for years). Then I watch an episode, get carried away in the 'verse and can't begin to contemplate how the show could *not* continue, somehow, somewhere.

Do we have any count on the numbers? I mean, we've been in the top ten at Amazon, and getting new people coming in every day saying they;ve just seen the movie.

It would be kind of nice to know what the numbers are before we start crying into our mudders milk.

Oh, I might cry anyway, but then that's how I am!

The Star Trek analogy is very fitting here..My dad told me when that was canceled no-one cared.
But as the years went by people started to see that show on reruns. Its popularity grew and grew..'till there was a movie..and a movie..and a movie. If Serenity were to come out now I know it would do much more than 25M. I had never heard of FireFly when the BDM came out...So I didn't go see it.. now I own movie and box set. I am not alone. look at the numbers at Amazon someone has to take notice(top 25 for how long) I hope....Our BDHs are more popular today then ever...hopefully our army of Browncoats keeps on growing...

Joss' own words, "We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty". I heard those words, and I believe in the message they carry. I,too, have only been a fan since Serenity came out, but I am not going to give up. I spread the word when I can, tell people about this shiny 'verse, and try to keep on top of the news where Firefly is concerned. There are fans on this board, still posting, that have been here since the beginning. Their hope has not flagged, and that renews the hope in me. I will not wishing, waiting, and doing my part until either Firefly comes back, or there are more movies...hopefully both .

Hold the line.
We'll be there beside you.

There was a story about the movie finally going into the black as the result of DVD sales. I'll find the web site and post the link. The movie + advertising cost about 49M. The domestic gross was 25M, the foreign gross was 13M, so the DVD sales had to top 11M to have the film go into the black. It did that about the second week in February. Since then, who knows? I would think all sales after that point were pure gravy, but what I worry about is the purple bellys holding onto the domestic gross number and saying there isn't the market. And Star Trek had 78 episodes to rerun. You just can't rerun Firefly the same way.

"No, I don't think you do."

BTW, no one seemed to mention my Blake's 7 reference. Pirates, complex personalities, fighting an evil, civilizing empire. Not the same story, but similar themes. And although there was much talk over the years about a movie, or a new series, nothing doing.

I agree with what CHRISTHECYNIC said. What we need's not hope (though that sure is a dandy thing to have): it's faith (or belief, if you wanna take a lesson from the shepherd). Suppose the numbers and articles and statistics don't look good. That's depressing as hell. Hard on the morale. But even if this thing fades away never to be seen or heard from again -- perish the thought -- would you really like to look back on it and say you didn't give it your all?

Honestly I think given the huge fan following, that the Firefly 'verse still has a chance at getting a second lease on life. Hell, I thought the movie looked stupid when I first saw the previews, but I just watched the whole season in one sitting last night and now I'm posting here. Firefly is the stuff of awesome.

Our new recruits our angels are coming here every day, my local Houston Crew just keeps on growing, how many less than a season tv shows can claim growing numbers, how does a movie that had mediocre success in the box office claim a ever growing fanbase, look at amazons sales, look at the local library, Houston crew donated dvd's to the library, there is a waiting list for Firefly!
Same thing for Serenity.

Hold the line, we will get through, you can't stop this signal.

I shall leave you with more of Big Damn Trilogy www.bedlambards.com

Trilogy, O trilogy, I want my trilogy,
Don't stop at one, Don't stop at two,
Gorramit, gimme three!
Trilogy, O trilogy, that's what I want to see,
Someday I'll own a boxed set
Of that Big Damn Trilogy!

They said we couldn't do it,
They said our show should die,
They took our love, they took our land,
They cancelled our Firefly...

I said this in the, "I Want to Cry..." thread and it applies here just as well. While I maintain that faith (belief) is more important than hope I also believe that hope is at least a bit justified.

So here's what I said in the other thread:

Ok, let me ask a question.

Who here was a fan when Firefly was cancelled?

Raise your hand if you were.

*Raises hand*

Ok, everyone who has their hand up along with me ask yourself something, when we heard there was no chance in hell of Firefly coming back in any form, that a movie was not doubtful, or insane, or stupid, but instead IMPOSSIBLE did you personally give up?

We'll you're here now so I’m betting on no.

We've done the impossible, and that means we're stubborn asses who don’t back down. We hold. That's what we do, even if it isn't intellegent or sane.

Now, everyone who was not around back then, you're here, you're the reason we will get more, you're proof we will get more. The fact that you came to us after the show was off the air, the fact that you came to us at all is all the proof you need that we have reason to hope.

You came here even though the series was canceled and the movie wasn't a huge hit. People like you will keep on coming to us, and that is why we can get more.

More to the point look around, I'll bet you that most people don't have their hands up, and each one with a hand down is one more reason hope for more is justified.

Keep on believing, and keep on spreading the word, and remember that no one ever did the impossible by giving up.
