Ballad of Serenity

We’ve received word that the new Serenity miniseries from Dark Horse will be titled Better Days and will be set during the Firefly TV series. Why? Well, for starters, all of the characters were still around at that point in the time. It’s also said to explore some plotlines that weren’t used in the original series. As expected, Joss Whedon will be co-writing this one with Brett Matthews, his collaborator on the first Serenity mini. No word yet on the artist, but Adam Hughes is rumored to be doing the covers.

As for stories that take place after the Serenity feature film… the success of the Serenity DVD may allow for a true sequel to be made. It’s just talk at this point, there are no deals and no guarantees…

But there’s still hope…

That would be so shiny! There are several spans of time wherein things happen but are not shown in the first season. For starters:

What exactly was the wobbly headed doll caper?

They supposedly headed to Beaumonde to stay for 2 weeks after OUR MRS. REYNOLDS. What happened there?

The cows were on the ship for 3 weeks between SHINDIG and SAFE. Is that all that happened for 3 weeks?

Between ARIEL, which happened in December, and TRASH, which happened in APRIL, all we got was WAR STORIES. That's a four month span.

Looking forward to the comic series. (I *really* need to read the one set between the show and the movie.) As for sequel news, well, talk is good. Talk means that someone, somewhere, is trying to make things happen. However, I personally have been burned way too many times on rumors to take anything I hear seriously until someone's actually put their name on a dotted line. Kind of a quirk of mine. Still, it's good news all around, as far as I'm concerned. :)

Well the word from Joss is that he's keeping hope, and he really wants to work with the actors but the phone isn't ringing and a sequel is doubtful.

As long as he keeps hope I'll keep faith, I don't give a damn about doubtful, unreasonable, insane, or even impossible.

Well, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Hope is great. Hurrah for hope. But sometimes, we're in a dark place and hope can't show through the darkness. That invites all manner of failure and dispair. We need only listen to the wise ol' preacher on this one: "Only one thing is going to walk you through this: belief." I needn't say more.

In any case, i would love there to be more, but i think we'll all have to wait for atleast 2 years for joss to do wonderwoman and then possibly something might happen, especially if wonderwoman is successful(although it's not really my cup of tea). The fact is that if DVD sales are consistent (studios forecast anywhere up to 5 years now to see if a film will make a profit) for both series and film, not to mention new fans being recruited due to syndication of the show, everything should be shiny in the long run.

...I fear there isn't enough episodes for syndication.

Flame wondered aloud, or at least in print:

I suspect that at least one of the cows suffered 'death by misfortune' -- slipped on a bar of soap and fell into a makeshift barbecue pit, that sort of thing. Very sad, but tasty as well.

Beats the heck outta horse steak and 'reconstituted protein', I'd wager...

Probably based on this timeline http://www.mts.net/~arphaxad/firefly.html which while an interesting piece of work is mostly conjecture.

In OUR MRS REYNOLDS, when Mal walks into Inara's shuttle and she is on the cortex, she says their scheduled arrival on Beaumonde is October 24. Then later in TRASH, Mal tells Monty that Saffron was on Serenity "six months back." Which would put TRASH happening in April.

No, David, actually, I haven't seen that website. My observations are based on reading the shooting scripts and watching the episodes. There are several references to time (Simon's been on the ship 2 months in SAFE, Saffron was on the ship 6 months back in TRASH, etc.), which allow for some pretty good estimates. (Also, see my previous post about October 24.)

For what it's worth, I think some of the times stated in the show are a bit carelessly scripted.

In the pilot episode, Inara states she's been on the ship eight months. In "Bushwhacked" she says "In a few weeks, it will be a year." That implies that at least two months, more likely three have passed since "The Train Job" and Simon seems awfully awkward still for having been there that amount of time. It could work, theoretically, but it seems odd.

Of course, it contradicts the "Safe" two months thing, too.

And in the movie Mal proclaims Simon and River have been on the ship for eight months, which throws everything all over the place even more.

So... I take these things with a grain of salt. *g*

Alright, here we go:

We know that they are going to arrive on Beaumonde on Oct. 24 (which, they actually get there a day or two late, because of Saffron). Mal even says as much to Inara. MAL; "We're back on course, should be on Beaumonde just a day or two late. Hope that's all right."

Inara mentions being on Beaumonde for two weeks, when she's talking to Mal in her shuttle (prior to finding out Saffron is a thief), though Mal's not sure.

So, we don't know what they did on Beaumonde, and that could be fodder for a comic book, but eventually they move on to Higgins Moon in JAYNESTOWN. Assuming they went straight to Higgins Moon from Beaumonde (which, yes, is an ASSUMPTION), they might have gotten there by mid to late November. (Two weeks on Beaumonde, and then travel time from Beaumonde - which is a border planet - to Higgins Moon which is a rim planet - reference: RPG).

I know it's neither here nor there, but JAYNE does mention turkey dinner while on Higgins Moon.

Then, from Higgins Moon they gotta take their merchandise to Bernoulli (wherever he is) - I think we can assume he's not on Higgins Moon.

Next, in OUT OF GAS it is said that they are going to Greenleaf, and that it will take almost a week to get there. Whether they get there or not, and what happens there, we don't know. Plus, they gotta drop the Shepherd at Bathgate Abbey. Again, more for the comics.

Finally, we reach ARIEL. Inara says she has to have an exam every year. They're only there a couple of days (it's referenced in the dialog). Yes, it's a guesstimate that they are here during December. Again, neither here nor there, but River references Christmas in the ARIEL episode.

Then they spend some time unloading the take from the ARIEL job, because when they get to WAR STORIES, they are going to Ezra to drop the last of the loot. MAL: "We're about 20,000 miles from our last drop, people."

Finally, in TRASH, we catch back up with a time reference (and not an assumption). MAL tells Monty: "It's true. Half-a-year back, out at the Triumph Settlement. Didn't call herself Bridgit then." So, knowing OMR happens in mid-October, TRASH is happening about mid-April.

I'm kinda rushed here, as I'm outta time, but hope this gives you something to think about!

It certainly does give me something to think about! I especially like the subtle catches you got, the references to "turkey dinner" and "Christmas", especially since that second one is to full of meaning already that it's easily missed as a calendar indicator!

I wasn't trying to debunk your logic, truly. Just point out that even verbally stated canon time can contradict itself. :)

True. Assuming they got on the ship as late as August or September, 8 months later only puts them in April or May, which is about when Trash happens (if we are to believe the Oct 24 date and Mal saying Saffron was on the ship a half year back) - way too early for the Serenity movie.

I've often wondered how they reckon time, anyway. I wouldn't think that every planet and moon was on the same day/night cycle as each other, or as Earth-That-Was. And River says "Day is a vestigial mode of time measurement based on solar cycles. It's not applicable."

There's one episode where Mal says something like "We'll be setting down at 10am" according to the planet time where they are landing, so that implies that times/dates are different on different worlds? Being out in the black and hopping around so much, maybe their sense of time is kinda distorted, so when they say "about 2 months" or "half a year ago" they're not so accurate? Jayne doesn't even know what month it is in the beginning of TRAIN JOB.

Or, as you said, just poorly scripted. And I'm reading way too much into it.

Plus we know Mal isn't overly precise as a rule. Remember his conversation with Kaylee prior to the BDM, where she told him the connections would hold for another two weeks (that was four months ago).

"Half a year" could be anything from last year to a couple of months back.

Plus, we have no reason to assume that the primary calendar is still based on a 12-month cycle. A year is a single orbit, so it's possible that Sihnon or Londinium or wherever they calculate their mean time from has a shorter or longer orbit --especially given how crowded the system seems to be.

Wow. Speaking of time, I hope this is true because the captain and his crew are not getting any younger. We have to get our sequel and the series back soon. Don't get me wrong, I'd still be willing to watch 60 year old Mal and Jayne's adventures but I doubt that many other people would be too! Oh my god, I think I'm going to have a panic attack.
