I swore that my family and I would NEVER watch FOX again. I was happy to say that for the longest time I was able to follow that. I am not happy to say that I am not going to be able to do that for much longer.
It has come to my attention that Gina Torres will be on a new FOX show called "StandOff".
Now I haven't seen it yet but fromt he previews it looks alright.
Here is what I suggest all the Browncoats, put aside your dislike for FOX and watch the pilot episoid of 'StandOff'

We are doing this for Gina NOT FOX

Standoff looks likt a terrible show. No chance I watch it. I don't care if Gina Torres is in it. Seriously, two hostage negotiators who carry a secret romance for each other!?!? BLEH!!!!

Pat brings up a good point, and though I know little about this pilot or show or whatever, I assume these lowly paid hostage negotiators live in upscale loft apartments in a downtown major city, while some will dress casually cool, others will be be in clothes that would cost them a months pay to afford. Probably only one if any charaters have any children and if that is the case, most likley the significant other is dead. All in all, people who are in the line of hostage negotion should not be dating inside their unit, I would assume, that is highly frowned upon by the police dept.

Google: Fox standoff

Ok, after preliminary assumption, I just checked out some info on it. Shit, I like Ron Livingston (office space saved my life). But that being said, it appears my assumptions are mildly correct. Torres is looking good in that picture. Ok, so it may be worse then I thought. Apparently this is some sort of hostage negotiator tagteam rivalry going on as well with some guy labeled as "deadly." I fear this may be the most ridiculous and outlandish idea I have seen in sometime. Yikes, did it just say it is being directed by the guy who did Fantastic 4 and Barbershop(eeewwwwwwwwwwwwww)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Well, I did boycott Fox up until Adam's show "The Inside" came on Fox. I gave them a chance and the ruttin' Reaver lovin' hwoon dahns cancelled that gorram show too!

I am hesitant to watch another show on Fox. If I do, it will only be to support Gina, not those Liou coe shway duh biao-tze huh hoe-tze duh bun ur-tze over at Fox.

patsrule and KuangZheDe:

I wonder what venom you would have poured on Firefly, had you seen it's promotional materials during its abortive run on F*x? To say that Firefly's ads and promotional materials were lame and misrepresentative is the understatement of the millenium...

But, I watched it anyway because I'd been following Alan Tudyk's career with more than mild interest since his (tour de force) performance in the S. Bullock vehicle, "30 Days".

Of course, once I watched the first episode, I was mesmerized by the dialogue and the chemistry of the ensemble. In spite of the F*x ads, I became a fan of the show. (hello? is this thing on?)...

So, "Standoff" may be a stink-fest. But you really can't base that decision on the F*x ads. I say, give it a chance. If it sucks, walk away. If it's good, support it (until F*x cancels it 5 episodes in, that is).

Reminiscently,

zoid

P.S.
For those able to comprehend: Remember the Amerind fable of the scorpion and the fox. F*x is the scorpion in this case; they just can't stop being a scorpion, even if it sinks us all.

P.P.S.
I'm a huge "House M.D." fan, the only series I watch on prime time network TV. It's on the Scorpion Network, too. I keep wondering when they're going to suddenly cancel it. 'Course, it'll be somewhat tougher since "House" has won several Golden Globes, but I have faith in the 'true nature' of F*x....

Did anybody see "House"'s season's finale? Wow! Very existential, reminiscent of OiS and OoG, except (*gulp*) maybe better than those comparisons... strictly from the standpoint of existentialism, mind you.

I did see the promotinal materials, and I read up about the show from sources other than Fox as well. It looked like a good show, and I wound up becoming a huge fan.

(Although this is not my main point, I have to say that I thought the promos for Firefly looked very good, they just didn't appear very often, then they showed the episodes out of order and so on...., but the promos I saw looked good)

Standoff will be a pile of dung. I really have no doubts about that. I am not going to watch everything every actor from Firefly does just because they are from Firefly. Firefly was magic, but I won't watch something that I think looks like drivel because it has a connection to Firefly.

There are enough shows in the Fall that I plan on giving a shot:

Heroes
Vanished
Kidnapped
Smith
Jericho
The Nine
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
Six Degrees

Thats plenty of new shows that all look better than Standoff.

(And the House finale was terrific: great episode)

Actually, I don't think you need to worry about House being canceled just yet. In addition to all the awards, it is doing really well on the Nielsen ratings, which is what really counts.

I am sad that fox cancelled firefly, but she sad truth is that I may have never discovered it if they hadn't.

Plus, I am pleased with them for sticking with Arrested Development, despite its low ratings, for three seasons. Man, I loved that show.

What's the point of boycotting Fox anyway?

Their programming is payed for by commercial ads, not your viewing habits. HIgher ratings gets more money via being able to charge more for those ads. The ratings they get are based on a select few (Nielsen) who watch. It makes no difference if the rest of the world doesn't watch.

Gina Torres and Ron Livingston (yay Office Space!) certainly earn my viewership. At least for the pilot. (Assuming Fox is showing the pilot first...)

Fair enough.

But you must have seen different promos for Firefly than the ones I saw. They had only a passing resemblance to the show itself, and none of its spirit. They portrayed Firefly as an actioner with space hookers. Firefly was never about any of those things. At its heart, Firefly was true science fiction, something television has never really seen before...

As to your second point: I'm gonna watch "Standoff" based on Ron Livingston's participation, with Gina's appearance in a role of substance as an added incentive. Livingston is a very good actor -- "Swingers", "Office Space", "Two Ninas", "The Cooler" -- and I trust his instincts and ability enough to give this series a look.

If it blows chunks, I'll hand it a moistened towel and walk away. But I don't think it will. At least, I'm not as certain as you are that it will be a waste of time. I'll give it a chance.

Open-mindedly,

zoid

Harrison Ford was my all time favorite actor in 1995. I loved just about everything I had ever seen him in, which was a lot of movies. When I saw the preview for the movie Sabrina, I said there is no way in Hell I watch that movie, and I never have. Noone has earned my viewership if the project looks like it that.

(Funny line about the pilot, by the way)

Certainly, you can watch it if you want, I won't stop you. But I would say that one can make an argument that it is actually closedmindedly to not skip over any show involving Gina Torres and Ron Livingston, no matter how bad the particular show looks, just because it has Gina Torres and Ron Livingston.

I am "openminded" enough if, after the show has aired, people I trust tell me its a great show, to go back and check it out. I can site Veronica Mars as my big mistake in dismissing. Thats the only one though, everything else I can think of that I have dismissed as being drivel after reading up on and seeing previews/ commercials either didn't get the endorsement after the fact, or I checked it out and was prooved correct. I have full confidence that this one won't get the good endorsement.

Sorry for the off-topic posty-ness, but YES! I really enjoyed the "House" season finale Zoid. My sister and I kept drawing OiS comparisons throughout. It was so good. So rare anymore to see a show that engages people on such a level.

Oh crap I just realized I have admitted to watching Fox by posting this. I am not one of the Nielsen's CHOSEN few though, and I only watch "House", and "Arrested Development" (before the s cancelled it). It also fills me with deep shame and guilt every time I tune in, it's (supposed to be) a matter of principle. Yep, I'm disappointed in me too.

I had been watching the season finale of House when I first saw the commercial for this show and I immediately turned to my friend and exclaimed with Joy "ZOE!" I will give the show a chance, however if Gina Torres wasn't in it I would most likely let it pass me by but this is the way I look at it: I enjoyed her work on Firefly so perhaps she again got on another gem worth watching so I will give it a go and if I hate it then so be it. As far as boycotting fox...I don't. If I boycott fox who knows I may miss another once in a lifetime gem (that they very well may cancel) and I don't want to do that. Lastly, the House ep was amazing. The plot was good the existential aspect was good and quite frankly I enjoyed seeing House truely confused for once without any sense of direction (Plus gore always gets a view from me).

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I'm sorry, this has nothing to do with the actual subject; the spelling in the subject line is driving me crazy.

FOX may have redeemed themselves (just a little)
Would be the proper spelling of everything. Could the original poster edit and make it right, please?

On the actual subject; I will watch it if I can. No cable and my reception sucks. We'll see.

I live in the UK so don't get these programs for months after you american browncoats, so it ain't an immediate issue for me.

But from the sound of this thread I can't see the point in watching any new series on FOX, do they even know how to let a series have a second season? Wait until season 3 and if it gets there, you might be safe to watch it and start enjoying it.

Darn I'm so bitter about firefly getting cancelled

Hee! I did the same thing to my mom!

Then she looked at me like "What...?" and I had to explain "THAT WAS... wait for it... damnit, just show... HER! HER! HER! THE PRETTY BLACK WOMAN RIGHT THERE! THAT'S GINA TORRES!"

And she looked at me like "Um, what...?" and I had to explain that it was "the actress who played Zoe on Firefly, remember!?". :P She loves Firefly, but she doesn't keep up with actors and producers and screenwriters the way I do at all. I had to point out like sixteen times that "The guy who played Badger on Firefly" (I can never remember the poor guy's name) was one of the terrorists on 24 this season.

24 and House are essenitally the only two shows I make an exception for when it comes to Fox, though I'll probably give Standoff a chance because it's got some good cast in it. ^-6

Of course, it isn't because I hate Fox because they canceled Firefly; it's just that by now (After Firefly, Tru Calling, AND Wonderfalls), I have learned now not to watch any Fox show that isn't put in an absolutely primo spot, because even though they sometimes get good shows made, unless they're put in a good timeslot with very little competition (see: 24, American Idol, House, The O.C.), they'll tank in the ratings and get dumped.

Tuesdays @ 8 PM is pretty good though. It's not got insane competition like Wed. or Thursday or Monday at that time, it's not Saturday or Friday, which is frequently a death knoll for any show (see: Firefly, Wonderfalls...). The only thing my family watches that would compete is NCIS, but we can DVR that one.

I too look forward to "Heroes" over on NBC, though. It looks awesome. ^___________^ AND it's in a decent spot. And after January, it'll be a double-feature with new episodes of Medium, too, since Medium starts returning to new eps that month. I luuuurve Medium. Heroes will be a MUCH better lead-in than Trump was! Though I still miss Las Vegas. At least Las Vegas is hanging on for another season, though - surprising considering they moved it to Fridays, but hopefully NBC is learning to have slightly lower expectations for Fridays, as they should (though it's entirely possible most of the viewers simply followed them to the new slot, like we did).

By the way - Firefly is apparently available on iTunes now! :D I can watch it on my video iPod now!

...as soon as I have $25.99 to spare, anyway. Or maybe I'll go for just my favorite episodes, like Objects in Space and Jaynestown.

What? It'd be better than half the news Podcasts I download and WAY more fun than listening to Canon in D Minor over and over again.

~Emma
