Dad's are the best!!! I love my daddy ( yes still call him daddy as I am a massive daddy's girl)

You're only young once, but you can be immature any time!

REGINAROADIE

I was gonna start a separate thread on this topic, but I saw this and figured I'd comment. Mine's a bit lengthy.

I went home yesterday for Father's Day. I hadn't seen my Dad in a month and a half and there was this celebration thing going on in town, so I decided to go back home early to see the family and all that. I went with my Dad to Congress (small town with a massive grain elevator) to bring back some chemicals for spraying and get some new stuff. And it was really great talking to him about work and the summer and what I want to do for my birthday and all that. I was really glad I went with him.

And it actually got me thinking about Joss and his work. I suspect that Father's Day (along with any religious holiday) is one of his least favorite days in the calendar year. On wikipedia.org, it says that one of the main themes of his work is his negative portrayal of fathers. And if you look through BUFFY/ANGEL/FIREFLY, it's pretty obvious that he doesn't like the father figure. They're either absent at best or downright villainous at worst. I think the only father that wasn't a son of a bitch was Fred's dad in that 3rd season ep of ANGEL.

And I suppose it's one of those ideological things of Joss's that keeps me from being a truly die-hard fan of his. I can get behind the subversion of genre cliche's, the rich characterizations, the almost musical dialogue and mythologies and everything else, but it's the middle finger to the biological family (in particular the father figure), as well as the abitrary killings of characters and atheism that keeps me from buying all 7 seasons of BUFFY and 5 seasons of ANGEL. I imagine is FIREFLY were still on the air, Gabriel would be a one dimensional bad guy, which I personally object to. And knowing that, I suppose that's why I did YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN to show that yes, he is a son of a bitch, but you find out WHY he's a son of a bitch and that what had happened has had a drastic effect on him.

If I were to ever become a filmmaker (and hopefully one day I will), I don't think I'll can make the "I hate my dad" story that so many filmmaker's tend to make (Joss, Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee), because I actually happen to have a great relationship with my Dad. And doing something like that would be a slap in the face to him. So Happy Father's Day, Dad. I love you.

But on Joss, does anyone else notice this and agree?

"There's only one "Return" ok, and it ain't "of the King", it's "of the Jedi."

"Maybe we should start calling your friend 'Padme' because he loves 'Mannequin Skywalker' so much, Right? (imitating robot) Danger...danger...my name is Anakin...my shitty acting is ruining saga."

Excerpt of internet teaser for CLERKS 2.
