a local stray cat that we have been feeding is now believed to be pregnant

we can't adopt the cat or her kittens because our 2 cats would kill us in our sleep

98% of teens have smoked pot, if you are one of the 2% that haven't, copy this into your signature

Oh, guy!
How sad for the little kitty. If you can't adopt her, put out signs and ads and let the humane society know that you're caring for her but can't keep her.
Maybe someone will want her.

where are you located?

You could also call around to vets and let them know that you have found it and can't keep it. Some of them will take them in.

well look on the internet for Humane Society, shelters and as a "last resort" animal control in your area.

But, I do know that Vets take them in. Esp if they are in a box in front of the door first thing in the morning. Not that I am advocating this, just stating fact.

no shelters of any kind here in podunk

plus, a couple of days before we found out I had a dream about a poor little defenceless kitten that looked almost exactly like the pregnant cat

what could this mean?

Yup.
Pretty much!
If you put flyers up the grocery and stuff at least someone might take interest. Otherwise, welcome the kitty to her new home!

Highly off topic, but... did you know that Podunk is a real place? It's a section of a town here in Massachusetts.

And yes, it's pretty far out in the boonies.

I don't disagree on any particular point.

Once you started feeding it - you were owned!

(a) cats will never totally adjust, but they will adapt.

(b) you don't have to bring it in - you can let it be an outdoor cat, but if you do that I would suggest having it spayed once the kittens come.

(c) if you really can't keep it and don't think you can find the kittens homes - start calling vet offices. Seriously, I once found a kitten in the middle of the road. I called a vet and told them I couldn't have it. They weren't happy but they did take it.

as for the cats not liking each other. I had 2, I now have 3 and sometimes 5. Eventually they all get along.

That you feel guilty about not bringing the cat into the house? *shrug* My cats went a little wierd when we brought a stray cat in, but they really do adjust in time. And since when have humans kept a cat completely satisfied? The way I see it, the ancient egyptians used to worship cats and cats have never forgotten it. Neither have they gotten over the insult of not being completely worshipped today.

Mine is an evil sugar high laugh! Bwahahahaha!

Sometimes if you keep the cats in separate rooms for awhile, they will adapt to each others' scent and presence, and then you can introduce them to each other with fewer problems. Don't let a strange cat around your cats, though, without a thorough veterinary exam and a feline leukemia/FIV test.

If adopting it simply will not work, most areas have animal rescue groups that will take in and foster cats while they attempt to find them new homes. Ask veterinarians in your area to help you.

Also, as barbaric as it sounds, a cat can be spayed while pregnant, preventing any more kittens from being born that will be unwanted. When I worked in an all-cat veterinary practice, we had rescue groups bring us pregnant cats to spay all the time.

Hope you can resolve the situation and find a home for the cat!

Well, cats are the favoured avatar of Bast, the goddess of childbirth, motherhood, and protection (especially of children, in the tradition of the most dangerous place in the 'verse being between a mother and her young --she can be swift and utterly merciless). Basically Zoe with the powers of a goddess.

Could be summoning you to do what you can to protect the mother-to-be and her children.

Bast isn't exactly Athena, but she has been known to reward those who help her. Trouble is, she doesn't heed human laws, and it sounds like your hands are tied.
