Why does Wilson Pickett succeed where Simon fails?

In "The Message" Simon tells Kaylee that she is the only girl he knows and she is very insulted. Rightfully so.

However, in his hit song "The Midnight Hour," Wilson Pickett says:
"You're the only girl I know
I really love you so
In the midnight hour"

Why does this line fly in the song and not in the dead cow fetus booth? If Simon had sang "you're literally the only girl I know" would she have jumped on him? Is it merely a cruel double standard between mowtown singers in checkered suits and fugitive spaceship doctors? Does the line even work in the song?

Please help me wade through this complicated issue in as un-serious a manor as possible.

Because what Wilson Pickett is saying is that he is blind to other women around him because she is the only girl who matters.

What Simon is saying is that Kaylee is a last resort- He's on a ship full of men, a Companion, a married woman, and his crazy sister. The only eligible is Kaylee.

Big difference between saying no other woman in the 'verse matters, and wow, I don't have any other choices, so your it.

Simon ain't too good at talkin' to girls. lol

I'm sure that is what PIckett is trying to say, that whoever he is singing to is the the only girl that matters to him but thats what Simon is trying to say as well before he idiotically points out the ironic fact that she really IS the only available women to him.

So obvious and serious answers aside...whatever Pickett is trying to say it still comes out as "you're the only girl i know" as in a me Tarzan you Jane, no one else around this time a night so lets go to my bunk. I think Simon's attempt leaves him coming off as a little less of a womanizer as well, yet he loses out and Pickett wins. Or does he?

Would you hook up with either of them after these pick up lines? Would the time of day matter? Is Simon trying to get laid or just trying to flirt? How does the cow fetus effect things?

You decide in as lighthearted a way as possible!
