...the one I bought on June 23rd, and I was struck by just how _good_ it is. Every time I watch it (this was just the third time, mind), I see something else. It sacrifices pretty much all character development other than Mal's (it has to, what with being an action movie under two hours long, etc.), but all the cast do a great job with the parts they have, and the way Mal deals with what life has handed to him is... well, it's art. Nathan Fillion doesn't get to look like, or be, a hero for most of this movie, and it makes the hard work of doing the right thing all the more meaningful (for me as an identifying viewer, anyway).

One of the little things has particularly stayed with me... Zoe reaching infinitesimally for her weapon when Mal confronts Simon after the Maidenhead incident, then relaxing just as subtly when it doesn't escalate -- what was she thinking of? Backing Mal up or getting him off Simon, if necessary?

I know we're probably never getting Firefly-as-it-was back (especially, as one other writer has pointed out, the actors are getting older every minute) but I'm still hopeful for Firefly-as-it-will-be. Maybe it will be another couple of years before we see our beloved BDHs again, but I feel confident that it'll be great, even if they are all older and not as pretty. The movie proved to my satisfaction that Nathan doesn't have to be pretty for me to want to watch him.

P.S. The part about Nathan not being pretty... I take it back, at least for the shirtless-wave-with-Inara scene. _That_ was plenty pretty for me :)

A lot of them are barely even out of their twenties! Those that are are barely out of their thirties! Those that are out of their thirties... have aged very well. Very, very well. I think there are plenty of pretty years left

I wondered about that mtself! I think whatever happens Zoe will back Mal up! No matter how stupidly pointless the things he does are. I mean... if he does 'em.

The thing with Zoe...If you go back to the deleted scene in Firefly where Zoe and Simon are talking about Serenity...She says she would kill Simon if the captain told her to. Zoe will defend her captain until the bitter end. She would have killed Simon if he seriously threatened Mal.

I think it was just her automatic response to tension/violence. Whether she was actually thinking "I'll back him up" or "I've got to stop him from killing Simon" is highly questionable. As many years as she was a soldier, I'm sure it was meant to be reflex. Excellent acting on Gina's part, anyway!

I agree. All the characters reacted exactly as they should. Zoe reached for her weapon, so she had some backup if things got messy. Kaylee got scared, and Inara sensed it and immediatly moved closer to her to protect her. Wash looked worried, while Jayne just seemed amused. Not a word spoken by anyone, and yet the scene still tells you everything you need to know about the characters.

I am! Your fault!
Or is it FollowMal's fault?

Either way, I'm loving it!

Ooh, I didn't see the bit about Inara moving closer to protect Kaylee. Next time I watch the movie I'll have to look for Kaylee and Inara whenever they're in the "background".

The other thing that struck me about that scene was how humble Simon was ("May I see her?"). He's just as concerned about what River might do to Serenity's crew -- really, to their adopted family -- as Mal is.

I showed the BDM to my older bro. He still fancies sci-fi stuff, even if he's all old and growd up. I ended up letting him take it w/ him, as it was my spare copy. ( Dad got a new big screen t.v., so I wanted to see how the bdm looked on 42" of rear projection - Sweet!

** Penguin - where's that sig from? 'I can see you' ?? Is that from the interview sessions site ?

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

I just watched the BDM again, and what struck me was just how beautiful and graceful River was doing her little 'Reaver dance'. Just gobsmacking to watch her literally dance her way through the carnage, and that little backbend with the axe...sweet.

I also noted the way she watches Mal. Sorry, Rayne shippers, it ain't the muscle she's wantin'...

I rewatched Serenity (BDM and BDS pilot) again and was struck by how Mal's aim improves when he gets testy in both.

In the BDS he gets mad at first Patience and shoots the horse from in front of her, then take out Dobson without hesitation back at the boat, all while he's in a temper.

In the BDM, when they're being chased on Lilac by the Reavers and he's trying to shoot the tow line attached to the harpoon in jayne's leg, once he get's grazed by a shot, he get's his 'Im'm annoyed' look and makes the shot successfully.

Phoenixrose:

Yes I agree with you. Zoe, being a soldier, would have a knee jerk reaction. I don't think killing anybody was necessary. She might have hit Simon on the head like she did in the Train Job on that poor fool who was celebrating unification day. She knows when and when not to kill.

It is why I watch excellent movies like this more than once. It like the last time I watched Serenity that I noticed the pebbles on our dear departeds grave stones. This is an old Hebrew custom. Nice touch. Joss may not be 100% but he comes awfully close.

Very well done, as well as creepifying!

Thanks!
