Hey all,

I'm brand-spankin new to the world of Firefly. I know some of you may scoff at that, thinking "Where were you when the ratings needed you?" But the thing is, I just rented the DVD of Serenity a couple weeks back. I loved the movie, so I went out and bought the TV series DVD set.

Right now, I'm halfway through the series. Lucky me, right? I get to watch it all non-stop, without commercials, and without waiting for new episodes? ;)

Anyway, I need some spoiler-free background info. So there is just the first season that was made, and that's it, right? Why did such a killer show get cancelled? Is there any hope for a network to pick it up again? Or is a sequel to the movie the only thing we can hope for?

I'm just getting into the whole world of Firefly, and I love it, but I'm sad that once this first season of DVDs is watched, there's nothing more.

Thanks!

the reason it was canceld is because 99.9% of viewers are ignorant huan dans who like nothing more than to rot their tiny brains with crappy reality TV (I know I put this in another thread)

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

It was mishandled from the start. The basic story goes as such:
"Oh! Joss Whedon wants to do a show and the WB doesn't have the budget! We should snatch him up because he is Joss Whedon!"
Joss Whedon pitches actual concept of show.
"Yeah, yeah, just make it. We want a hit like Buffy!"
Joss makes two hour pilot.
"This is too long! And what the hell is it? Where is the action and humor? No, we're not airing this. Do something else."
Joss edits two-hour pilot.
"No. Nope, we're still not airing it. This won't hook anyone. Write something else. You have two days."
Joss and Tim write "The Train Job" in a weekend.
Behind his back, the execs are probably saying something like "We're not going to make any money on this show. Let's put it in the Friday slot of death!"
Show is aired in Friday night slot of death. It is pre-empted and shown out of order. The promotion sucks.
Show is cancelled. Pilot is finally aired. Joss goes to network and asks for the rights to get something made elsewhere. They say yes.
End of Fox lunacy.
Joss goes off in search of others to make his story, finally finds Mary Parent at Universal, who greenlights a film.
Dong ma?

Whoa, good summary.

That was very accurate and entertaining at the same time.

That is what happened in a nutshell.

The best thing about Firefly to me is that I can watch an episode for the 39th time and still love it, laugh and cry and get all scared just like the first time. My other favorite thing about Firefly is spreading the love.

Welcome to the 'verse.

So this is probably the most-asked question on this board, but is there hope for the series to be picked up anywhere else?

I'm just about to start the last DVD in the series set, and it's gonna suck if that's it. I mean, yeah, a sequel to the movie would be great, but this is a story that deserves a TV show.

I haven't been so engrossed with a TV show in the space/sci-fi genre since Star Trek TNG...

Plus, from having seen the movie FIRST, it looks as if River is just finally coming into herself. There HAS to be more!!!!

There are comic books that... sort of... fill the gap between series and movie. Can't get too much info in, of course, but there are a few good moments. Plus there is the unfilmed script, called "Dead or Alive" that you can find in the Script Discussion forum. There is also the novelization of the movie, the visual companion, the R.Tam sessions (I'm sure someone here can point you to them, I have forgotten where I downloaded them from) and the book of essays known as "Finding Serenity". In Sept they are releasing Visual Companions to the show (correct me if I'm wrong, fans). We are trying many things to raise awareness and get more of the 'verse. On Friday the 14th the Sci-fi channel will be showing a marathon (10 hours, I think?) and there are plans to write them thank you letters along the lines of "Thank you for continuing to air Firefly. I am a devoted fan and will keep watching, be it old material or new" in hopes that they might pick up a mini-series, actual series, or even TV movie. Since Sci-Fi is owned by Universal, who now own the rights to make at least three movies, this would be a viable option and hopefully they will get the hint. Another major movie is also possible, assuming the DVD sales of the current one continue to be strong, so buy the movie if you haven't, introduce new people to the 'verse and tell them to buy the movie.
Beyond that there are possible novels based on Firefly. Right now they are in a holding pattern since the future is uncertain; any new movies will affect the 'verse and hence the novels. Also Joss is working on some more comic books that will hopefully be out sometime next year.
Wow, my hands are tired.

Just finished the DVD series this morning. I chewed through all four discs in 48 hours! Couldn't help it though...felt like it deserved to be watched all in one sitting, more or less.

Great summary of where we're at PR, but there's another possibility that some of us are holding out hope for: video games! Personally, I'd prefer one big Firefly 'Verse game, online so we can all have our own ships and form crews to fly around the 'verse together, but at this point I'd take anything based on Firefly.

For feedback to SciFi, where do we write?

I *know* there are at least half a million of us on this board alone, and likely more who just don't internet...but if we all wrote, that network would be going, "Woooo! Built in viewership! Megaratings!" Riiight?

Welcome home, anarky!

Have a little basket of big, ripe,
juicy strawberries all for yourself
while we hang about the ramp waiting
for the "all aboard" before we take off.
Then we'll go up to the galley and
partake of buffet food: wife soup,
ice-planets, fresh bao, chocolate-y
cake, Mudder's Milk -- even hot cheese.

At this location:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=45
you'll find an un-polished script for the
unfilmed episode Dead or Alive.
There are, alas, no more that we know of.

Your DVDs are full of good commentary and
features you can enjoy now that you've
gorged on the original shows.

Spread the Firefly love -- tell your
friends -- give DVDs as gifts!
