Nope, haven't seen it yet, really lack any reason to see it twice. Johnny Depp just isn't my type of actor for some reason *shrug*. (Yes, I know, supposedly he's cute an' all, but I lost my mild interest when Cry Baby came out and found him truly creepifyin' sometime after What's eating Gilbert Grape?.)

And Guy, I feel your pain. Currently, I'm stuck reading Jude the Obscure for summer reading. Why can't they give us Lord of the Rings or Dune or something that won't make you want to jump off a cliff, screaming about the futility of all life?!?!?!?

{{{{Morwen}}}} I think I know why kids get bludgeoned with gos se like 'Babbitt' (which is as far from good literature as you can get, IMHO) but not Tolkien. They probably won't consider it for these reasons:
a.) It's too long. They'd have to give up shoving Sinclair Lewis and Steinbeck down your throat to fit it in.
b.) It's not set in 'the real world.'
c.) The kids may actually learn words that have more than two syllables and aren't profane.
But the big reason is d.) If your teacher had to suffer through it in school, then darn it all, so are all the subsequent generations as well.

That would be me. I'm all about escaping reality & always thinking up other things I'd rather do & be.

in fact I came up with the following tagline the other day

"I'm not an idiot, but sometimes I play one in real life"

in thought of what literature teaches today. Last year my wife & I hosted a 16 yr old girl from Korea. One of her assignments in English Lit was to identify the character archetypes in the original Star Wars movie. Talk about having fun helping with homework.

ok so TPBM - has had a crush on one of the characters in the Star Wars saga.

Not quite, although I did have to teach myself some basic "stage" sword-fighting for a play I was in called "The Pirates Curse" A Home-School Adaptation of Pirates of the Carribean. I played Jack Sparrow. It was very basic stuff since I was the oldest cast member & everyone else was 15 or younger.

ok so TPBM has been in some type of drama.
