I whipped together a fake trailer for a hypothetical sequel to Serenity, using clips from the series, the movie, and other movies. Where possible I tried to use clips from deleted scenes in order to make it feel a little more "fresh".

It's available on youtube at:

Let me know what you think!

Hans

UPDATE!!! The "full trailer is up as of August 2nd, with even more shiny goodness!

WOW!!!!!!!
Beyond totally rocked!

2 Questions:
1) Is there a way to get that into the hands of Universal studio execs? Create our own pitch on Joss's behalf?

2) What software are folks using for their video captures and editing? I don't want to spend alot of money, but I guess I'm prepared to if need be.

Loved that! Immediately got me thinking about what the plot would be! Any writers willing to take up the challenge to draft an outline?

Actually, I had quite a detailed plot in mind when I made the trailer, though of course it's hard to tell a new story using old footage, so it doesn't really come through.

What I had in mind: It's a year after the events in the movie. The Miranda incident has upset the political stability of the 'verse, and an economic depression has hit the system. Things are so bad that Mal can't even keep the ship fuelled, and the whole crew has settled down on some remote rim planet. Zoe has bought a farm and is raising her baby, Wash junior. Simon is the doctor for a small town, and lives with Kaylee. That kind of thing. The crew keep in touch but life is hard.

However, there's neferious deeds afoot. There's some sort of treasure (I think of it as "confederate gold", it's as good a MacGuffin as any) hidden at Serenity Valley. A group of no-good thieves (backed by Niska maybe?) are going after it. Part of their plan includes killing Mal, who knows something about this hidden treasure from his time fighting on Hera. The assassination attempt fails. Knowing Mal's life is in danger, the crew gathers together what cash they can, helps Mal get the rusting old ship off the ground, and they head in-system, trying to get to the treasure before the bad guys do. Space battles, bar fights, quickdraws, and run-ins with the law result.

That's a great plot. You should consider writing it out in script form.

Glad you're rocked. I used Windows Movie Maker, which comes with XP Home (I think). I have a TV tuner card in my PC, and fed the DVD images in though that to capture the images. Plus, there's a whole pile of freeware out there to do things like capture audio from a DVD, editing audio files (I used FX audio editor - fairly powerful and free 30 day trial), etc.

Lol, aside from that odd chord in the Serenity soundtrack that still gets me, (right between the guitar and whatever that deeper instrument, whatever it is, there's an upswing in the tone, and it just sounds so full-on, gorram happy that it jerks me from the firefly mindset)...

Twas AWESOME, especially the Zoe-Simon voiceover, I never realized how good an intro to the series it made. Right when you start the theme music and the voiceover, that when I got that "aww hells yeah" feeling trailers try to get, and I thought, DAMNIT WHERE'S MY SEQUEL!!!

"But, these strong women characters?"

Hans:

I got goosebumps. (NB: That's a very good thing.)

Nice idea for a basis, and well-fleshed out, in a teaser-y way. There was clearly a story to be told, and I wanted to see that story...

v/r,
-zed

P.S.
Somebody remind me why we can't see 24 Firefly-based mini-movies (say, an hour long each) every year? I mean, I've heard the excuses, but they just don't make reasonable sense...

The 'verse is just ripe with possible stories -- and considering the apparent dearth of fresh ideas in Hollywood -- why isn't someone in power out there jumping through his own sphincter to tap that potential? It's just insane to let that opportunity pass...

Here's another fake trailer for "Return to Serenity", the non-existent sequel to Serenity. Think of this as the "full trailer" to the "teaser trailer" I posted before. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that one day there will be a real sequel! Thanks for all the comments here which encouraged me to finish this project.

I'm pretty happy that about 90% of it is from deleted scenes or other movies, which hopefully gives it a fresh feeling. If you're bored, you can try and guess what movies I took clips from (other than Serenity and Firefly, obviously).

Music in this trailer includes: "The Man With the Harmonica" (Once Upon a Time in the West) by Ennio Morricone, "Jayne and Zoe - Final Battle" (Serenity) by David Newman, and "River's Jig" (On the Drift) by the Bedlam Bards. The last is used with permission ( www.bedlambards.com), the rest under fair dealing.

Asarian (and others), don't miss the brand new trailer, linked to a few posts above this one (and I just edited the URL into the first post in this thread). It's hopefully a little more polished than the "teaser trailer", and at very least if you like the first you should like the second...
