My cat has a tendancy to pick things up and bring them to me...pencils, pouches of cat food, DVDs..

Well, my husband and I have one of the DVD cases from Firefly in about every room of the house. Can play on the computer, in the bedroom, in the kitchen when I'm making dinner. Basically it's an all-Firefly all the time type of thing.

So this morning, I wake up, and my cat is very delicately sitting on my face. You know how they are. And there are four...count them four DVD boxes in bed with me. I can't figure out how in the 'verse the happened, so naturally, I ask her.

She just starts crying...making a big scene, jumping all over the bed and nudging me, like some sort of freak! So, testing my theory, I throw the TV on and play "Shindig." Cat jumps over to the TV and sits so close I fear for her vision.

She's still in there. It gets quiet so I start the next episode, and she's been in there for more than an hour sitting in front of the TV.

If it's spreading to the animals, you know it's gotta be good.

Mal: You know, you ain't quite right.
River: It's a popular theory.

Maybe FF is the cat equivalent of the subliminal Fruity Oaty Bar commercial.

Really, though, that's fascinating.

It may be the "Revenge" factor. My way of thinking. Your cat sees the pilot eps of Firefly. Sees the part where the "Good Dogs" sign comes into the scene and thinks " Revenge, finally cat haters of the world get theirs."

Just a thought

That is really a fascinating story.

All my cat ever shows interest in on TV is the Animal Planet channel... and it has to be scenes of animals, preferably prey animals, running or flying around to keep him watching.

Any cat who will go to the trouble your cat did to watch Firefly is a ruttin' genius cat... with outstanding taste. Definitely let her watch Firefly whenever she wants to. It's only for a lack of opposable thumbs that keeps her from loading up the DVD player herself.

Really, this is a great story.

Essential question:
Were the DVD boxes in order?

And another:
Does she seem to prefer Mal, Jayne,

anyone in particular?

That is SO awesome. Sadly I don't think my hamster will ever be able to fetch anything, but through no fault of her own (she is quite small and locked up in a cage) Hopefully she tells all her kitty friends and the Browncoat population keeps growing!

Just more proof that man is not the dominant lifeform on the planet.

Think about it. Cats - you spoil them rotten, and they make a pleased noise. How cool is that as a raison d'etre?

People say that if cats had thumbs, they would rule the world. Cats DO rule the world; the thumbs are attached to their slaves.

Sad, but true. So terribly true.

As for using the non-opposables to pick
things up, I've had more than one cat who
could snag things with a single claw.

I had another who had observed until she
knew how to open a door by jumping off
a table and grabbing the knob. Fortunately
for all of us, she was tiny and didn't
weigh enough to make the physics work out.

Ahhh, the cats and their stories....

Ours could open swing and sliding doors, and could use the door knocker to let us know when it wanted to be let in. Smart beast. Had a brown coat. (Regrettably died before being able to become a Browncoat.)

...ate my first post hours ago...
Our doorknob kitty was good with sliding panels
in furniture, and she could open cupboard doors
by pulling at their lower edges with a turned-
over paw. Probably our best cat burglar.

We had a semi-browncoat also too early for
Firefly, a sealpoint Siamese. He would play
chicken with our 2-year-old by laying his tail
across the track of a big sliding glass door,
waiting for her to push the door shut, and
flicking his tail up out of the way just as the
horizontal guillotine arrived.
When I couldn't stand it any more I told the
cat he was not only going to suffer pain but
he was going to look really stupid with half a
tail and people would laugh and point. He was
persuaded to stop. ::-)

My sister had three cats.

One or more of them knew how to open tender vittles packs when they were hungry.

When sis went away for the weekend, she'd put out lots of water and some can food on Friday night and leave 5 or 6 packs of vittles on the table. They didn't much like any regular dry food and the tender vittles would dry out if left laying around too long as well so she couldn't just leave them in a bowl or they wouldn't eat em after the first day.

The amazing part was that there was never any mess , and there was never more than ONE partialy eaten pack. They would open one and eat it all before opening another. Cool cats.

Other sister had a cat that liked to jump up and flip light switches. Was really spooky at night sometimes when lights would come on at random around the house. She even figured out how to bite lamp pull-cords to turn them on and off as well.

yeah we have a cat that can open doors, transport items ( he is quite the jewlery thief, mind you he gets bored with what he steals than hide in in the return air vent) he once speed dialed my mother, we can no longer have a christmas tree because he hides in it and leaps on the dogs which terrifies them..I could go on and on. I tried the firefly thing and you are right...he loves it. He's watching now and I've never seen him so intent.
