In Daily Variety or the Hollywood Reporter?

Even though there are a lot of good things going on in the Firefly Universe, I am getting a sense that people are tired of fighting and that many have given up thinking they will ever see more of the crew of Serenity.

But I just can't. I can't give it up, I can't accept that it may be over. I'm hopelessly in love with Joss's creation.

We've got to let the PTB's know that there is strong, growing fanbase highly invested in seeing Mal and his crew on further adventures.

Does anyone have any interest in putting together or helping to pay for a full page ad detailing the Equality Now screenings, Joss's Nebula win, DTI, continued strong dvd sales of the BDM and Firefly and possibly even Joss's win of a Hugo (if he does win--the awards are in Aug) for the one year anniversary of SERENITY's release (Sept 30)?

I know it's been done before, but it sure got the attention of the right people and could do the same thing again.

Is there anyone here part of the first effort who could give advice on doing it again?

Hi, KSB36

The Event Team for the Serenity 'Versary have discussed something like this but haven't gotten to the implementation point yet. We had a fellow email us about it early on in the start of the campaign.

We'd be interested in any ideas you have and any thing that can be learned from whoever answers from the first time around.

We're interested in all the ideas that fans have and are passionate about. Believe me, we feel exactly the same way you do and are by no means ready to lay down arms yet. No siree.

How about if you check into how to run ads in California papers and the Daily Variety and Hollywood Reporter. How much it would be? How they did it last time? You keep on top of this for us and present it to our team headed by 11th Hour?

How does that sound to you?

This may be just the ticket to get some attention. Let's check it out.

You can email me at followmal@gmail.com if you'd like.. saves having to deal with the PM.

Hey KSB36,

Thank you for suggesting this. We're getting a little close to the anniversary date, so to raise the money, now is the time to get started!

Can you also find the material due dates for the pubs for ads to run on the 30th? Thinking it may be a couple days before. I can add the due date to the FFF.net event calendar.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=19&t=21898

Here is the original thread talking about the Serenity 'Versary for reference. FM is looking for the name of the other person who was interested in helping out with an ad idea.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=19&t=21775

11thHour is at ComicCon this weekend, so we'll touch base with her about this when she returns. I'm thinking she'll be interested in designing the ad!

KSB36,

No not precisely at this moment, because I have to dig thru my mail to find him, I'm embarrassed to say.

I am diligently doing so and will get with you and him about it when I find him. I hate when I'm unorganized.

Sure I'd like.. please do.

And keep in touch with me! I will with you.

KSB36

An ad in Variety is an excellent idea. This is a trade publication so the folks who read it are all involved in the "biz".

In addition to the points you made about mentioning the success of the Serenity Now/Equality Now screenings, and Joss' many awards, if we want the ad to go a step further and give a boost behind the notion of sequels, then the ad should also feature:

• The excellent sales of both the Serenity and Firefly DVDs. A quick overview of the Amazon rankings would be a good touch... such as X number of weeks in the top 20, and also the number of positive reviews... which is A LOT.

• The very successful sales of Serenity related merchandise. From what I understand, the comic books were Dark Horse's most profitable comic that year. The trading cards sold out.

• Also on the merchandise front, the Serenity Role Playing Game is going into its 4th printing! That's a huge deal for an RPG. Plus our book won the Origins Award for the People's Choice Best Role Playing Game of the Year.

• Mention how the memberships for the message boards keeps increasing. This will help demonstrate that the fan base just keeps growing.

• The ad should also thank Mary Parent. She took a bit of a chance getting behind Serenity. It'll also be nice to mention her name in such a positive manner in a publication that her peers and associates read.

As shiny as it is to advertise the good works done through the recent SN/EN screenings, and Joss' (well deseved) awards, a studio won't be motivated to green light a production unless it sees profit potential. So mentioning how Serenity, and Firefly, are still making money and being noticed is vital.

The "temperment" of the ad should mainly be a "thank you" to Universal, and not come off too heavy handed like the fans screaming for sequels... even though we've been known to do that. Rather, if the ad is geared as thanks, and then mentions the successes that Serenity is still enjoying, Universal can do its own math.

I see that folks have already volunteered to gather needed info on this. So let's hear back from them and then we'll know better how to move forward.

Wow 11th hour, that seems perfect. Makes complete sense to me. A trade journal would definitely get the attention of the folks that call the shots. Would an ad in a "normal" paper get new recruits? Make someone that has never heard of the 'verse say, "What is this all about?" and go out and rent or buy the BDS or BDM? and would that be better at getting our ultimate goal...A BDM2 or BDS season2 or Mini series even? I don't know what do browncoats think?

LA or NY Times has millions of readers daily. a lot of the people in the Biz also read those.

Thanks for the info on the cost of the ad - it helps us have a goal to shoot for. I think we could do that without too much of a problem...but then again, we should ask those who did it the first time. It seems like now is the perfect time for one of these...it sort of seems like now or never - you know? So, I think we should give it a shot. It might be a great culmination to the Summer of Serenity campaign.

Is there some place with a comprehensive listing of all the local crews and their e-mail addresses? If so, could you send me the link?

We have a few things in our favor this time--the injection of lots of fired up newbies, the ongoing popularity of the box set/BDM and the power of the blogosphere.

If we could get every Brownocat who has a blog, knows someone who has a blog and/or contributes regularly to a blog, to get the word out about what we are trying to do, it would be like absolute wildfire. We could raise a lot of money very quickly.

We're still in the beginning stages of this idea, but I am beginning to see how it could work. I'll keep the board posted as to progress.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Also a suggestion,
I noticed folks are talking about making this a regional thing, I think its better for everyone to work together for it, if yall want to hit more than one magazine, then set goal #1, make the second magazine goal #2 etc, it wont hurt to stagger it and it keeps us from being a divided force, everyone working together instead of promoting smaller parts of the project will be more effective.

Hey all, read this: http://www.everwoodmusic.com/forum/everwood1318.html

Notice how quidkly they raised $10,000. It also tells how the fans of Everwood put a big Ferris wheel next to the offices of Fox (I think, I havent read it all that carefully). But, the most interesting part is all the reporters they got there. (although I cant find any articles on it). Also, when I found some pictures, it didnt look like the turnout was all that good, but, it still is an interesting idea in addition to the Variety magazine (they did that also.)

See my original thread here: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=22311&m=352346#352346
