So, I went out to order another copy of the Firefly disks for a friend, but it... Is having a problem. It's assigning a maximum of 5 copies. Unfortunately, it's assigning 5 copies even when I try to update it to less than 5!

So confusing.

I actually got Amazon's support on the phone, and her comment was "That's messed up!" Yeah, it's not just me - she's having the same problem!

Too weird. I mean, I like buying lots of the DVDs, but this is crazy. It actually won't let me place the order, as it's constantly saying my quantity is too high...

Is it they can't fill orders? or is it they only allow one entity to buy five?

I have the same problem. Amazon customer service was no help.

Another poster explained that Amazon has a policy that limits a customer to a total of five copies per lifetime. The limit is different for different items.

If this is correct, it seems to be a very strange policy. I can walk into a retail store and buy every copy they have in stock.

Apparently Amazon told the other poster that "Amazon is not a wholesaler", suggesting that they are concerned about people reselling items bought at low Amazon prices. Perhaps Amazon has secret agreements with the studios along those lines, in order to provide some protection to the retail distributors.

In any case, my own complaints to Amazon about this led exactly nowhere. Try buying at DeepDiscountDVD.com, especially when they have a sale. I have had excellent service from them.

I wrote about this a while back. Amazon makes me so mad!

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=21706#325202

Every item on Amazon has a quantity in a drop down box next to the "add to cart" button.

Firefly and Serenity only get 5. That means you can only have five total in your account's order history. To order more, you need to create a new Amazon account.

Batman gets 30, it's not fair. Amazon is being stupid.

I got mine at Best Buys. But I bought it on a spree. Just lucky I guess. Never realized the Diamond I had in my hand as I walked out the store. Just knew Ron Glass was in it and was good enough for me. Never had trouble with Amazon. Must be a glitch in their system. I'm sure it is only temporary. Try again in a few days. They want to sell to you as much as you want to buy so I'm sure if they have a problem they will fix it. "Profit" move mountains.

It's not a glitch, and it won't go away in a few days. You can only buy five.

Directly from Amazon management (after I repeatedly called and emailed demanding them to fix this glitch, then demanded to speak with a manager):

Please keep in mind that we are a retailer, not a wholesaler. We want as many customers as possible to be able to enjoy the items we sell, and so for some popular items we've limited the quantity that an individual customer may purchase from our store.

There is a glitch though. The error message should read, "You've already purchased the maximum allowable." Instead, it changes your quantity to five (even though you only ordered one) and ends up making no sense.

Amazon is purposely limiting purchase quantities per account. That part is not a glitch.

They are totally stupid for doing so.

I don't know where you live, so I can't tell you to run out to a particular store. But if this some new policy of Amazon it does seem stupid. what if you bought five different items. Is it the quantity they have a problem with or do they really think you need five Fireflys. Though I think there are people here who do beleave that. "Just a joke guys." But in truth if you can find it somewhere else, than go for it. Amazon isn't the only game in town. As a matter of fact I think you can get through this very website. Or does it lead back to Amazon? I never tried so I really don't know. But five copies seems odd. Like I said I got mine at Best Buys. Any stores like that near you.

This gives me a bit of hope really. If they are limiting Firefly and Serenity to 5 each - then they must know that the demand is growing. Otherwise, why would they bother?

Or is it just me?

Although I agree that it is a bogus policy.

I had this exact problem on June 23rd (joss' bday when we were buying online)...
I finally had to give up and buy through overstock.com,
but I printed out the bad order page and mailed it to Amazon and they STILL didn't even try to fix it!!
wankers
(so frustrating)

OMG I just read your post, Succatash, and I am amazed...
they are on purpose sending good customers (like me, I've spent big bucks at Amazon) to other sites (like I bought the Firefly set at Overstock.com) because we've ordered too many copies of Firefly?!?!?!
Where is the sense in that?
That is weird troll logic!

We should protest. I just browsed some DVD's on Amazon and they all get 30 in the dropdown list.

Why do Serenity and Firefly only get 5? We should start bombarding Amazon demanding we get to order more than 5.

Interesting - Serenity HD gets 30.

You can order it from Walmart, if you ever shop from them. The price isn't bad, either: (approximately, I don't recall the cents) $35 right now.

That is awfully strange of Amazon to do, though. I see what they're saying about retail and wholesale but... shouldn't it be even? Why 30 Batman, 20-some Serenity, and only 5 Firefly? Why not some single, consistant limit on every product, if they have to limit? It seems discriminatory, though I don't know what the basis would be.

These are DVDs, people. Buy all you want - they'll make more.

I wonder if Amazon isn't trying to create a perceived scarcity so that they can increase prices - or keep them higher? (Like the oil companies...or Microsoft.)

With the recent / ongoing Serenity Day campaigns, more people want to buy the DVD. People are probably also clicking links on various Firefly sites, to get those sites a few pennies. And Jeff Bezos is grinning like a loon.

Just go buy from someone else. Amazon's mystique is entirely meretricious.

How about a groupd form letter - FFF.net spam, as it were(?):

Dear Amazonholes...

I've been buying all manner of books, music and video from you JERKS for years, however, I CAN PROMISE YOU NOT ONE(!) MORE(!!) RED(!!!) CENT(!!!!) ...and until you fix this, you are as good as to everyone I speak with.

I talked with someone about this. They couldn't understand the reasoning but they gave me this site for finding the best prices on the net. It's pricegrabber.com. Hope I got that right. Anyway if Amazon wants to be a pain then I say go somewhere else. It's their loss. Personally I rarely complain. It usually goes to somebody who could care less. And if you have to it means there is something wrong with their attitude to begin with.

I've bought about eleven copies of Firefly from Amazon. I think I may have gotten around the 5 copies limit by having them sent to friends all over the country, rather than having them mailed to my home address. Or, maybe they instituted the 5 copy limit fairly recently, after I had purchased them. At any rate, try having them shipped to a different address (like your friend's) and see if that works.

I think I ordered about a dozen copies of Serenity from amazon.com, before Xmas, as gifts. This must be a recent thing, this '5 only' limit.

Bwah!

No such luck. But thanks for all the recommendations (and condemnations ).

I think I'll just go buy it locally. Annoying, as I'll have to pay a lot more for it, but...

"But what about these geeks a-gawkin' at me?"

...and, while we're at it (Ah-Clem, shift your gear from 'Bozo' to 'Giant Rat,' a-NOW)
"What about reality?..."

"...tell the President to put it between two slices of..."

"BREAD! ...and EAT IT! Eat it RAW!!"
"RAW, RAW, RAH! THAT'S... the kind of spirits we have here at..." "More sugar, for more science at..." "...Stupid, Inbred Stack of"... BEET "High"

Whew... I don't believe I've seen a larger, more convolutedlyly garbled pile of twisted Firesign references ever... I'm proud o' myself. Well... I suppose I may owe 'em a royalty or two...

Listen - if anyone doesn't get where my signature originally came from (and thinks, perhaps, that this "poor-unfortunate"... might be a tad... ummm... {how you say, yankee-round-eye?} anti-social(??);
...the deal is that the "Stupid, inbred stack of meat" gag is from a scene in the BDM that made me laugh for, fully, 48 hours after I figured it out. Yeah-yeah, I know some of you know, but... for those that don't:

...the scene is, I'm pretty sure, the only scene wherein any of our BDH's actually sits down to read a book (since River corrected Book's Bible, anyway). And, who should be performing this (abovementioned) pastoral activity but, ahem... Jayne. He sits in the lounge reading a book with Chinese characters on the back cover. Pinyinary translates those characters as meaning, "Buy this book or your friends will think you're a stupid, inbred stack of meat"... which, designation, I'm sure, Jayne was rather anxious to avoid having applied to his, rather imposing, carcass - I mean, "stack of meat(!)"... whew...
So, was that sweet, Dayve-beet? The way I see it, if Joss came up with it, it redefines "Sweet"

Now... I suddenly feel like a rousing viewing of "Eraserhead" while listening to my definitive collection of antique "Scraping-Fetus-Off-the-Wheels" albums. Or, maybe, lunch
