Shiny!

OK, so remember the guy I was talkin about awhile ago who liked graphic design and sushi? His most recent reply to "what have you been up to" from me included a reference to being lonely, wishing there were more people in our age group in town, and that kind of thing.
Should I suggest hanging out or wait awhile longer?

Welcome, both of you!

Magdalena, I could go with the obvious "yes" and "no", but those are too easy. How about the more vague "maybe"? To me, it means the possibility exists, more on the yes-side than the no-side. Most females I hear that word from usually mean "not until hell freezes over".

A word that might cause quite a bit of discussion is "love"...define what that word means to you!

Thanks Guy - that's kind of what I'm thinking... but I'd say if you are interested in getting to know him better... I have learned the hard way that once I am actually interested it's a lot harder to do the askin'... it's safer and less awkward if you are interested coz it shows (no matter how much you try not to show it) and then it's kind of weird when you run into each other...

I asked a guy out last year who I knew nothing about - he worked in a book shop I go to a lot & we got along fine and there was even some very harmless flirting, so I asked him out and he said ...sorry, he was already seeing someone. It's not as weird as if I'd had the loaded hopes I have had sometimes when I asked someone out... and we are quite good friends - still have a chat when I'm in the shop.

Hell... If I looked like you I'd be asking everyone out!!!

Whoa, the posts multiplied like rabbits!

When I say maybe, it means "probably" unless I say it very sadly, which means "probably not, but still possible." If I mean "when hell freezes over" I'll say that. Or, y'know similar.

Yeah, maybe I should take a chance and just say something. I can't really tell if I have real feelings for him, but he's not unappealing. And, y'know, he's actually in my town, which is more than can be said of most guys who are currently interested in me much as I can hardly say that they're unappealing themselves. *ahem*

MSG, I sort of have an embarassing one regarding using a product aimed at the opposite sex...it's called Nair. There is nothing on the market like that for males, and since it claimed to do what I needed it to do, I thought it would be a good idea. I also tried some green stuff that you are supposed to spread on, put cloth over, and quickly rip off...kinda like waxing. That was also a mistake. But, it was also aimed at the opposite sex. The Nair, however, has to have been the most painful thing I ever tried. Never again, believe me.
Beyond that, I do sometimes go after shampoos and conditioners that are mostly aimed at the opposite sex.

I would go even further and say anything 'diet' is almost exclusively marketing toward women. And light beer. And white zin (blech), but not necessarily zinfandel. If it's low calorie, low fat, low taste, you can bet it's target is the womenfolk.

P.S. I hope I didn't offend those of you still living at home with my rant yesterday. None of you sound like the squatters I was referencing.

Magdalena Zinfandel is a white wine made from red grapes. Kind of fruity with less oxidation than usual white wine:)

Tristan...Ok I hate to do this, but I have to laugh...I find nair one of the least painful hair removals I have tried...mayhap I am simply a masochist:) If nair was a real problem though you can always try either surgiwax or sally hansen's extra strength hair remover...please note I am carefully avoiding figuring out which hair you removed...don't think I want to know:)

Interesting one.

I like beer - proper beer, not the fizzy keg crap, and the only reason I don't drink pints is the volume. But the real thing I like is single malt whisky, particularly the Islay ones. These are proper 'bloke' ones, the big, peaty evil bastard things. I don't drink, and never have drunk, the traditional 'girly' drinks.

I think it comes down to not being a 'girly' girl. I am not interested in fashion, but can get geekily over-excited by big budget films. I will be the one agitating to go see the explosions. The nearest thing to a 'boy band' album I own is probably Blink-182.

I get quite insulted by the targeted advertising actually. Particularly the ones that portray all women as castrating manipulators and the men as useless pawns. My husband is quite capable of doing housework without me nagging him (he is in fact a lot better at it than me) and I am quite capable of putting up shelves etc.

Oops. Rant over.

ed: I lied. Someone once tried to teach me how to calculate a calorie. I hit him. I do not know, and have no desire to ever know, such a useless thing. Low fat, half fat, low salt, no sugar, decaf - these are the works of evil, my friends. And not in a happy Forsaken way. Try making a garlic/creme fraiche/ cheese topping for sherry glazed chicken with half fat, and see what happens...

Magdalena, zinfandel, in the US, is generally seen as a white, or rose, wine. Zinfandel is actually a red grape, but most people know of White Zinfandel...oh, here, read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinfandel

I consider myself a wine snob, so I am not much of a fan of zinfandels of any kind...sorry to those that enjoy it, but give me a solid red any day...I'd even take a Merlot!

Ah... thank you MsG... I actually like fairly sweet wine and we're spoilt for variety here... Not a style/brand I've come accross in Aus...

I was wondering too about the Nair being painful Tristan? It is also one of the less painful (& less pleasant smelling) forms of hair-removal I have tried!! It's funny 'coz I actually prefer to go to a salon and have my legs waxed proffessionally and they tell me that there are more and more men getting chests, backs, legs, armpits and eyebrows waxed all the time. Most of the men I know who shave/wax etc are avid bike riders... cuts down on wind friction apparently... though I did date a guy (back in my gorgeous youth ) who had his chest waxed for a modelling shoot and when it was growing back in he was soooooo itchy!!!

Actually it was quite funny at the time...

Well, goodnight all... I'm off to fill in the census and hit the pillow!! Mwaaah - Magda x x

EDIT: Thank you too Tristan... but what's wrong with a Merlot? I prefer a cabernet merlot but...

Not sure we want to get into this too much, but I will say that I received a decent chemical burn...and wondered if that was the case for those of you that use it...I need something that works like Nair, and does not require the use of "rapid removal" of cloth or the like...

SpaceAnJL, I have not seen "Sideways"...so what am I missing?

As for the wine, I spent three of my formative years living in France, and was introduced early on to red wine...I learned what was good and what was not good according to vintage and taste. I still consider it somewhat blasphemous to use wine to cook with...except in the case of using it to baste the chef, that is!

Wow... thank you for that link Tristan... and I had wondered about the hair removal but was too polite to say anything... I guess there's few options which will be pleasant though... You might keep your eyes open for a salon that does men... there are more and more of them... I do find getting a proffessional to do a waxing is much less painful than doing it myself...

Also the late harvest wine sounds like something I'd like... so I am thoroughly educated in the zinfandel now... We probably have it in Australia, but might be known by another name. A lot of our early wine making was done by Germans rather than French vintners... and I do love my reds too... just prefer the sweeter wines when it comes to whites

'Sideways' was that film with Paul Giametti on an upmarket pissheads road trip. It had some merlot-related ranting in it, is all.

I cook with alcohol frequently, since I do French, Italian and Trad British, as well as Indian and Asian. I would recommend the lamb thing - seriously, the wine marinade makes the meat melt off the bones, and cooks the onions into a savoury sauce. And you cannot make a decent steak and kidney pudding without good stout in the gravy. Or Moules marinieres without white wine.

Okay, I'm a pisshead.

Magdalena, yes, it is a bit early to get too far into that. Suffice to say that up until that experiment, razors did the job pretty well. Again, I don't want to get too involved, but waxing does not sound like a good idea for a male. I may try a few other products, but will probably stick with the razor.

SpaceAnJL, I understand now. I have wanted to see that movie, but have not gotten around to it yet. You may have me convinced about the cooking, though...my mouth started watering and my stomach reminded me it was near lunch time when you started talking about lamb...

Actually, Zinfandel is as red a wine as merlot (which is currently out of favor after having enjoyed a long run as the most popular red during the late 90s) or cabernet. White Zinfandel is a blush wine made from Zinfandel grapes. That's why I made the distinction. I don't like White Zin, or white wines in general, but am a fan of Zinfandel in its natural state as a red wine. My boss makes some fantastic Zin. :yummy:

Edited to say: My current favorite wine is a Syrah. Not a big fan of Cabs. For whites I prefer Pinot Grigio or even a Viognier, if I have to....

Agree with that. I have a soft spot for 'Sideaways' because it was filmed in my backyard, so to speak. I'm a bit further north(bout an hour), but Santa Ynez is my playground as far as the horses are concerned.

Man I leave to scrub the bathroom and kitchen and set the chicken marinating and posts go wild.

Tristan when you cook with wine it intensifies the flavor of the wine in deglazing and then you have a sauce more yummmy than your best bottle...oh and french wine rocks!!, but I have to say I've had some great Australian reds recently:)

SpaceAnJL- you'll appreciate this. I just popped the top on some tomatos I canned last year with garlic, olive oil and fresh basil. They've been self stewing and they smell amazing. Threw them on some chicken breasts to marinate for my all time fav self invention. Rice, chicken breasts, the tomato, basil, olive oil, garlic combo, chicken stock. Baked until about ready. Then wilt spinach and place in the dish then crumble and sprinkle fresh feta or fresh smoked mozzerella on top and broil for about 5...so perfect for summer.

EDIT- now if I can just get myself geared for bread making...wasn't in the mood Sunday or Monday as my beloved baby sister moved far away to Missouri yesterday:( ( my family is really close and my sibs are the best friends I have exceot for my hubby)
