Tristan- Yeah. Got a problem with that?
Well, okay then. Thats what I thought.
Had to throw in the confrontational attitude as to keep a balance with the strange thought process which has so invaded my brain as of late.
Can't explain it. Too tired.

Rugbug- I was told a while back to make friends in that area because of the spectacular number of morning dove. Heard recently that due to the rise in human poulation it may not be a good idea anymore. Pisses me off. Same thing happened here as it has in many other places. Too many people.

Not to start the occasional rant concerning Califa, but Western Nevada is becoming innundated by folks hoping to escape the high cost of living, politics, and overcrowding. I feel for alot of folks who have to put up with it. But it is causing alot of mixed feelings here in Nevada. Can't stand seeing a few of the ranches I pretty much grew up on being chopped up into subdivisions. And gated communities are springing up everywhere. This is Nevada people. I was gonna start ranting how good firearms can be purchased in the state of Nevada for defense, but I forgot the politics and mentality of the people moving in. I love everyone, but don't come to my state and tell me or the other lifelong residents that it is wrong to carry guns in their vehicles.

Sorry folks. Just a bit tired of being called wrong and evil behind my back. Especially by folks who don't know any better. Guess thats the reason I ain't smacked anyone in the mouth. Yet.
They know not what they do.

FMF...:hugs: to you.

NVG: Yes, Californians are taking over the world. I mean the west. First it was Oregon, then Washington and now apparently Nevada. We've got to go somewhere as it's too frickin' expensive to live here. My town is well on its way to being the next Santa Barbara. I can't afford to live in SB, that's why I'm here. :grumble, grumble:

And you know what, carry your guns. But just realize, it freaks us out some. Different paradigms and all. You're allowed to carry 'em around, right...as long as they're not concealed? Not so much in CA. If you see a gun (unless you're out hunting) it means some bad #$@% is going down.

I just thought about getting a gun this weekend after some guy tried breaking in my back door at 3am. Traumatizing, I tell ya. But I think I will settle for some pepper spray first. And then a BIG, BIG dog. And then maybe a piece.

Rugbug- someone broke in your house? Ok time for a nice big dog and a lovely shotgun. Fond of shotguns for home defense as the sound of one cocking is unmistakable and it's kind of idiot proof. Point in the direction of head or torso and fire.

As far as guns go, I have been carrying one since I turned 21. Always have it on or near me. Alabama has a concealed pistol law, and it's relatively easy to get one for the average citizen. I have never needed it, but it's nice to know I have it. I'd still like to walk around with two Akitas at my side, but that's not really an option...

I also agree with your valuation of shotguns. I like them, too!

Hey all!

I was out of town last week for my brother's wedding (in rural Kentucky, which was a cultural experience for this California girl, let me tell you!) and haven't had a chance to catch up on all the Imponderable threads. Also crazy work stuff going on here, but that's getting to be the norm.

Anyhow, I'm back around, will be trying to keep up with the goings on here. But in the meantime, let me share with you the conversation hubby and I are having on instant messenger. His car is in the shop, so we've been sharing my car. I had a meeting in LA yesterday so I took the car, but he has it again today. Anyway, maybe y'all will find this funny:

me: oh, btw
I realized this morning after you left that I left something in the car

hubby: oh st
important?

me: uh, not really, no

hubby: what is it?

me: but you might want to go get it out of the car

hubby: ...
Sweety

me: its a donut
in the glove box

hubby: oh mah gawd
why is there a donut in the glove box sweety?
hmmmm?

me: I'm just kinda worried it might explode

hubby: oh js, it's filled?

me: cuz I didn't have time to eat it yesterday
I think so, yes

hubby: =(

We've determined that since its wrapped in a plastic bag, it should be ok. He's still going to get it out of there soon though. Don't want Boston crème all over my glove box...

Thanks Rugbug. Funny, we can carry in public in Churchill County. If you have no training, my suggestions are against firearms. But if you have had some, I also suggest a shotgun. Something simple. There are a few makers of coach gun style double barrels that are durable and price effective (200 to 300 dollar range). Also, burgalers hate smaller dogs. They bark at the slightest things and they don't stop barking.
I think we have been lucky enough to get a good mix here in the county. About a quarter if the folks are actually interested in coutry living. There are so many horse people here now and they are only growing. Its actually kinda cool.
Just so much track housing between Fallon and Reno.

Yum, creme filled donuts. Not sure the glove box is a great place for them, but yum nonetheless.

MSG: Guy didn't actually break in. I would've been a basket case. Turned out to be a stupid drunk guy who thought he was at his house. Freaked me out all the same. He tried opening the door a few times and then started pounding on it. I turned the light on and then opened the blinds (backdoor is one of those with a window in it) and was like. "who are you? Go away!" He was all, "Am I at the wrong house?" Um, yea, you drunk assed piece of crap. He's lucky I didn't have a shot gun...although even if I had a gun, I don't think I could aim it at someone, much less shoot it. I couldn't even bring myself to call the cops on him. He seemed harmless enough once I got a look at him. But it really brought home the fact that I live alone. I really wanted a big strong man to take care of the situation and then comfort me. Took me about an hour and a half to go back to sleep.

I thought about using the incident to beg my landlord to let me have my dog back (who very heart-breakingly is still up for adoption...although in a foster home). Jasper would've let the guy know in no uncertain terms that this Was.Not.His.House.
The guard dog himself:

Edited because while Jasper is a big dog, he's not THAT BIG. Picture size problem fixed with different picture. And nope, he doesn't look like a good guard dog, but he was.

Tristan…
Texas has a concealed handgun law as well. The problem I have with it is this. I see way too many people carrying guns who probably shouldn’t. It’s true that in order to get a permit to carry, you have to complete a gun safety class, but a lot of times it’s poorly taught, if at all. Another thing that bothers me is that some folks who carry guns are just too afraid to use them. They think that just by pulling the thing out that they will be protected. I personally know of an instance where a gun was taken from a legal gun owner and used against him.

I’m certainly not saying that what happened to this guy is a common occurrence, but any time there is a loaded weapon thrown into an already tense situation, the likelihood of death or injury is escalated.

This is a gun crazy society we live in. They are easy to get and, unfortunately, often seen as a necessity. I own guns, but I have never carried one with me, other than the varmit rifle I have in the ranch truck (and it stays on the ranch).

In a perfect world, there would be no need for weapons of any kind, and I would like nothing better than to see all handguns melted down and remade into something useful to mankind – but, of course this world is a long way from being perfect and the truth is there will always be elements in this society who feel a sense of security and bravado from being able to pack heat.

I know guys who are very serious about carrying their guns, and to a man, each tells me that if they ever have to use it, they will shoot to kill. So I guess what I'm saying is, if you carry a handgun, just be sure you know how to use it and use it well enough to kill what you shoot. I’m just not convinced that everyone is prepared to deal with the consequences that follow.

May I suggest that you talk to your landlord ( look up stats on how dogs are crime deterrents) and then use the combo bribe i.e. " non-refundable deposit" and threat I'd hate to think about your liability if I were attacked and injured after I had asked to keep my dog for saftey reasons since 1 in 5 ( yes this is accurate) women are attacked in their own homes. If that doesn't work, I'd be happy to poison him and withold the antidote until he lets you keep your precious dog.

NVG: That was the day after I brought him home from the pound. He didn't warm up for a couple of weeks. So yes, stoic it was. Hang-dog, even. But that's what drew me to him. He was like "whatever" which meant once he was happy dog again he wouldn't be psycho-hyper.

Note to those going to the pound for a dog: If the dog is bouncing off the walls at the pound, it will only be worse once you get it home.

I visited him a week after I had to give him up and he was so happy to see me it tore my heart out. (It is even bringing tears to my eyes as I type). That was over a year and a half ago and I still think about him almost every day. Stupid landlord.

Saw him again this last March and he is happy in the foster home, but they just can't keep him. He really just needs a family to love on. He loves his people and just wants to be near them.

Dayve, I agree with you for the most part. There are some people who should not own guns. No to wax poetical, but it is the ultimate tool of death, designed for no other purpose. Yes, there are hunters out there, but the majority of people who carry guns are not doing so in case a deer crosses their path. (Can you imagine trying to take down a deer at 25 yards with a semi-automatic handgun?) I was brought up around guns, and taught to use them properly. I shot my first gun at the age of five, I think. And even though I pride myself on my gun savvy, I have had a few incidents in my past (including shooting a hole through my roof). Everyone has "idiot" moments, and I am lucky mine did not result in a casualty.
Having a gun means I am willing and able to use it if the situation requires it. I was taught a simple mantra (if you want to call it that) regarding pistols. Don't pull it if you don't intend on shooting someone. Don't shoot someone unless you plan on killing them. That will make you think before using it, I'll tell you that much.

I agree with you on most of this. I wish we, as humans, could carry our tools and weapons as not to need them for defense from each other. But living on a ranch you know the need for firearms. I remember not having a pistola handy while fencing in Ely (boss didn't like us having anything bigger than pocket knives). Dying animals are a fact of life on the range. And it is my preferance to give a suffering creature a quicker end than a sledgehammer.

And yes, people have to better trained these days. Its not like TV where most people go home and hug their families and live on happier ever after. Most folks I know are severly traumatized after violent incidents. Some have even renounced the use of firearms.

Alot to think about.

Tristan suprisingly that is the same training cops go through. If you have drawn your weapon, you have decided the situation is serious enough to warrent shooting. If you have a situation serious enough to warrent shooting, then you have to shoot to kill. That kind of situation moves fast and you shouldn't be trying to line up a non-kill shot when people's lives are in danger. I must also point out that the only people ever to successfully escape a serial killer did so because they had a loaded shotgun in the house and the husband was able ( despite serious injury) to get to it and stop the serial killer before his wife was( ok not finishing this so as not to upset others)lets just say hurt:)

Sorry leanred through experience that what I know and have seen is not generally for people and they get upset if I provide details and such:) Once had to share a car with the other runner at my work and I left a tape in the player that was reviewing a serial rapist's case and she about had a fit/heart attack when she started the car and that started playing....ooops

I have constant clashes with myself on that subject. There is so much people haven't seen or experienced. Stuff you can't un-see. Kinda helps when you have folks flapping their gums about certain subjects that they have no clue about. Especially when they'd neither seen or done the things they are talking about. Just worries me that so much of our various cultures are indirectly traumatized in numerous ways. Feel bad about unloading on the unknowing soul in the Bush is a racist arse discussion. Ok I have an imponderable. Just read a min rant article in Time and she made an excellent point. Why have all romantic comedies become helpless slob, inept, guy hopelessly outclassed and fixed up by uber smart, savvy, successful women? Why can't there be slobby unsuccessful women? Why is it when the girl needs rescue it's an action flick and when the guy needs rescue it's a comedy?

Because tragedy and comedy are mates. It is as much a tragedy for a man to be saved by a woman as it is a comedy. The whole process of falling in love is the clashing of the two ideals. In a way the successful woman is slobby in the sense that she could not find anyone better and had to settle for the fixer upper. And in another way it shows the insecurity of the whole thing because the higher classed woman had to be the better in the relationship. Part of the reason I watch very little romantic comedy. Also the reason I watch very little horror and action movies. The problem is that they are all the same.

Try watching Unleashed with Jet Li. It seems to be an ultra satirization of this problem. But it is very truthful. Some men who are released from their masters grasp need love and affection to balance them out. They need to be taught as innocent children. Sometimes it takes an open and loving woman to do that. Or the family they never had to help them feel neccessary.

Just worries me that so much of our various cultures are indirectly traumatized in numerous ways. Feel bad about unloading on the unknowing soul in the Bush is a racist arse discussion. Just seems there is no way but the hard way when trying to have some people see the other side of things. The truth does hurt.

There are some things that are beneficial for everyone to know, no matter how much it traumatizes them. Walking around life with racial blinders on is no way to live. So, unload away.

But, as an opposite example, when I learned that a guy I had been in touch with on a horse forum (we were discussing anthropomorphization...he definitely thought his animals appreciated "his human quirkiness while I don't think animals are capable of that kind of thought) was into beastiality...with the pictures of him and his stallions and dogs on-line to prove it, I stayed away. I didn't need those pictures floating in my mind. There was no personal growth there for me. There are just some things you can't take back or forget.

Now I need to go find NVG's RWE post.

NV- I think your "rant" was a beautifully thought out and well form statement. Nice job!

Rugbug- kinda confused...I know horses have a sense of humor. My sister's clydesdale loves to sneak up on me and pull my pony tale. I think he's a doll. So I am assuming you mean horses don't get blond jokes ( or have a human sense of humor)

I choose to rise instead of fall- U2

MSG: I mean horses don't understand us as humans. They understand our behaviour in horse terms. They don't "enjoy our quirky humanness" as this guy said (which after his activities came to light, where all the more creepy). They will play with us, but it is in horse terms. Humor? Not so much, IMHO. But they do play. 'I'm gonna bite her and see if she'll chase me or kick me. If she kicks me, I'll back off. If she chases, we'll run.' If Mr. Ponytailbiter gets too pushy (crosses the line of play and dangerous), and you don't reprimand him as a horse would (we smack 'em or "growl" at 'em, a horse would kick 'em or squeal) his behaviour could cross the line. And often times, the behaviours we characterize as one thing 'sense of humor' are actually installed by us through inadvertent rewards. We think biting the ponytail is cute so we use the soothing, happy voice and laugh or pat them. That reinforces the behaviour. It's possible the first time this horse did this, he was testing the waters of herd dominance.

Basically, we have to relate to horses as horses. The behaviour needs to be analyzed within a horse framework, not a human one. The sicko I mentioned rationalized that his horses 'LOVED' him and wanted to have sex with him. Um, no.

It is true that the human body and mind require trauma in order to keep from keeling over from being startled by a butterfly. And some people need a good punch in the face to get them moving. Its not just race. Its also: gender, age, geography, hair color, size, weight, IQ, social status, money, job, etc., etc.

I was gonna mention sexual preferance, but the beastialiy remark really threw me for a curve.

It is believed among us that animals and people used to walk and talk with each other. It might not be an actual conversation with an animal, but they do understand moods and body language.

ADD: Communicating in horse terms is a good way of putting it. My uncle taught me the best way to wrangle mustangs is to walk right up to them. Some may even let you throw on a lead rope without any hesitation if you "introduce" yourself in the correct manner. He once even jumped right on several horses in a wild herd and rode them. I assumed they may have been green broke by someone in the past, but he said that is the way he learned from those before him.

And how can anyone subject an animal to their sense of affections in that way? I understand the human mind has all kinds of quirks and such, but that has to be a major hiccup in a persons programming.
