You know, it never really occurred to me before, but I was thinking...

Why does he (Shepherd) stay on the ship? I know Kaylee pointed out that he was looking more at the ships themselves, not their destinations, but still. Why did he stay instead of getting off at some point and carrying on with his business (whatever that was supposed to be)?

He had heathens enough on the ship. He wasn't looking at the destinations, just at the ship. So it didn't MATTER where he went. I think with Serenity, he found a home in a way, like the rest of the crew.

I think he felt needed. Not in a "They Need to be Saved" sense, but he was of use. It's like Inara tells him in the pilot, maybe he's just where he needs to be.
That and I think he saw ALOT of himself, or his past self, in Mal. Granted, that's why he leaves for Haven in the first place, before he stops caring that he punched Mal. Mal was in a dark place between the show and the BDM, and Book was going down with him.
Theres so much about Book that we don't know, alot of it is speculation. That's why there is fanfic.
Enough rambling theories. Hope this helped!

Thanks for your thoughts, both of you. They did help. Girlaskew is right... a lot of what we "know" about Shepherd is speculation. These theories work well enough for me, though. They make sense.

And if that bit of story doesn't seem familiar, you haven't read Serenity: Those Left Behind the Graphic Novel (Collection of 3 comic books with all 9 covers) Story takes place between Firefly and Serenity.

I think there is a lot of story there. If Joss had more seasons that would have been a lot of fun..How many people said he wasn't a shepard? I'm not so sure he was what he claimed to be. I think that is one of the reasons he killed Book off in the movie..Too many unanswered questions. Easier dead.

I think that Shepherd Book needed the crew as much as they needed him. I think he was trying to get away from killing and crime, but somehow, found himself in the middle of it again. But in a different sense. There has probably been speculation before about Book's last profession, but I definitely think shepherd used to be an assassin for the alliance.
