DONCOAT

Okay, folks, it's time to 'fess up. I was going to keep this on the QT, but it's just way too shiny not to share it with my fellow Browncoats.

I, DonCoat, am the crazy person who won the eBay auction for Adam Baldwin's script for Serenity (the pilot episode). It's here at DonCoat Manor, sitting within reach as I write this, and I must say -- it was worth every penny (especially since all those pennies went to a good cause).

Let me give you a little description. The package contained the following items: a nice personal thank-you note from Adam; an autographed photo of "The Man They Call Jayne" sandwiched between a couple of Serenity-logo publicity posters; and a neatly packaged script.

The script is a bit over 100 looseleaf pages held together with metal bendy tabs (not sure what those are called). The cover page is green, and is signed by all nine principals plus Joss and Tim Minear. There are a couple stains on the front and back covers -- you can imagine the cast munching on donuts as they sat down for their read-throughs. The interior pages are typed or printed on one side only. There are a number of revisions; those pages are green as well, and include a few extra pages (e.g. 18 and 18A). The final revision is dated July 24, 2002.

Now here's where things get really interesting.

Adam has highlighted all of his lines (or Jayne's, if you prefer) in yellow highlighter, except on the revised pages. In a few places he has written some comments in the margins. And some of those comments are fascinating, and even hi-larious.

Page 8: (the script is describing the Dortmunder and its captain. Adam's note: "The Boring People".

Page 30: after Mal's line, "Jayne, your mouth is talking. You might wanna look to that," the script gives Jayne's line as: "I'm ready to stop talking whenev --". Adam has written in, "--er and wherever you call it." Now, I haven't checked whether this line was shot with that extension on it, or if Adam just wanted clarification about what he was supposed to be saying so it would sound more natural when Mal cut him off. Either way it's pretty shiny.

Page 39: Adam got a little careless with the highlighter and left a mark in the margin. Maybe a random accident, but it happens to be just opposite Inara's line to Book and Mal: "It's all right. I mostly keep to myself. When I'm not whoring." So it doesn't seem too much of a stretch that Adam might have gotten wild with the marker because he was laughing along with the rest of the cast at that point.

Page 63: in the scene where the crew are discussing Simon's actions in forcing Mal to run from the Feds, Inara says "He didn't shoot her." Jayne's line is "But somebody on this boat did and I'm scratching my head as to why we ain't dealt with him." Adam's note to himself: Push their Buttons.

Page 82: discussing making the deal with Patience, Jayne says: "Still say there's gonna be gunplay." Adam writes: (happy)

And now we come to the real gem of the whole script. Jayne's last line comes on page 104, in the scene where Mal is asking him why he didn't take Dobson's bribe: "Well, that'll be an interesting day." Now, imagine the scene. Adam has been hired for the role of Jayne, and knows only a little bit about him (he's a mercenary, not too bright, not too dependable, etc.) The cast gets their script for the pilot episode and, for the first time, they read it through and get a real idea of the character they're going to be playing. And what's Adam's reaction?

I'll tell you what it is, because he wrote it down right there in the margin. And here's what he had to say about Jayne:

....... I like him! .......

Underscored twice.

Adam, we are all so very glad you did. You made him unforgettable.

So that's my initial impression of the Serenity script. I hope you enjoyed hearing about it. And if any of you folks were bidding against me, I offer my condolences, though I can't honestly say I'm sorry I outbid you. This stack of paper is now one of my most valued possessions, and it will soon be in a bank deposit box for safekeeping.

Oh, one other observation: did you know the correct spelling is "Gorramn", with an n?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I looked up something in the Serenity Visual Companion the other day and noticed that spelling of gorramn. If I am not mistaken, all of the captions on the Firefly dvds have it spelled without the n, and the next time I watch the BDM I'll leave the captions on to check for that.

Congratulations on your shiny luck, Doncoat. I'm sure I'm not the only one a little bit envious.

You know, I haven't found an example of that variant.

Before I stash this thing away in a vault I plan to watch through the pilot with the script in front of me, comparing it with the filmed/edited version. When I do that I'll keep my eyes open for "gorrammit" and (if it's there) I'll get back to you.

-----

I've been thinking... in case anyone is considering bidding on the other scripts, it's probably a good idea to conjure which episodes have relatively more Jayne in them. It's obvious (in hindsight) that those will be more interesting because of Adam's notes. I'm referring to "Jaynestown" here, and maybe one or two other eps. Whereas, say, "Objects In Space" would be less likely to have those little extras.

Take it from me: the script itself is nice, with the autographs and all, but it's the notes that make it a real treasure.

www.fireflywiki.org
has all the scripts of the series, so if you know, in which episode they used "gorrammit", you could look it up.

The scripts obviously are the originals (like the piloter still has the scene where Zoe talks about Mal loosing everything in the war, which was later taken out). If anyone cared to know:

Quote:

ENCYCLOPEDIA
In the war to unite the planets, The Battle Of Serenity was among the most devastating and decisive. Located on Hera, the valley was considered a key position by both sides, and was bitterly fought over. The Independent Faction, with sixteen brigades and twenty air-tank squads,
held the valley against Alliance forces for almost two months, until superior numbers and a brilliant deep- flank strategy by General Richard
Wil --

ZOE
What does it say under 'bloodbath'?

Simon turns off the book, seeing Zoe in his doorway.

SIMON
I'm was just trying to --

ZOE
We're not in there. The book, I mean. We're not generals or diplomats, we didn't turn the tide of glorious history or whatever that thing is supposed to spew.

SIMON
You know what they say: History is programmed by the winners.

ZOE
Nearly half a million people lay dead on that field at day's end, about a third of them 'winners'. Can you imagine the smell? Can you imagine piling up the bodies of soldiers -- of friends -- to build a wall 'cause you got no cover? Blood just kept pouring out of them, you'd slip in it half the time, find out bloodbath is not just a figure of speech.

SIMON
Mal was there with you.

She enters, sits across from him.

ZOE
He was my sergeant. In command of thirty-odd grunts -- five days in, there were so many officers dead he commanded two thousand. Kept us
together, kept us fighting, kept us sane. By the time the fighting was over he had maybe four hundred still intact.

SIMON
That's a hell of a --

ZOE
I said the fighting was over. But you see they left us there. Wounded, and sick, and near to mad as can still walk and talk. Both sides left
us there while they 'negotiated the peace'. For a week. And we just kept dying. When they finally sent in Medships, he had about a hundred and
fifty left, and of our original platoon, just me.

She stands.

ZOE (cont'd)
Mercy, forgiveness, trust... Those are things he left back there. What he has now is the ship, the ship and us on it. You get Kaylee through this and I think he'll do right by you. He won't kill unless he's got no other option.

SIMON
What if he tells you to kill me?

ZOE
I kill you.

So there are some deviations to the finished "product", but they are minimal (reading them, I was amazed at how exactly the actors stayed with their lines!) The Book-Inara scene obviously was planned all different though.

Anyways, this is nothing compared with the script that DonCoat got - with REAL staines and the comments of Adam. Thanks for sharing and congratulations! I can see, that it came to worthy hands!

ZOID

DonCoat:

I think it's an excellent plan to place the script in a bank vault. If this whole thing winds up playing itself out like I foresee it happening, that script is going to wind up being worth 10 times the amount you paid. ...And even then, you probably won't want to sell it: Too much sentimental value. Your children or grandchildren might decide to sell it, however, in order to better secure their future. Wouldn't it be nice if our ancestors all left us something worth a couple x $10K?

But before you vault it:

1) Scan a digital copy of it and burn it to writeable media, preferably that with "dye formulations... such as phthalocyanine and azo" which "are more stable and last longer, 100 years or more, compared to 20 or 30 years for less stable dyes", and then only under ideal conditions (from http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html). When you store the media in your safe deposit box, be sure it stands on an edge, rather than on its face or back; this will add years to its readability.

2) Having a digital scan also means you can peruse the document at your discretion from any computer -- or any other JPEG-reading device, like current-gen MP3 players, compatible DVD players, cell phones, et cetera -- without having to put acids from your fingertips onto the actual paper document itself. This will save you trips to your bank to look at (and place your destructive fingertips on) your religious icon. ;)

3) Store the paper document itself in a ziploc bag (pressed as flat as possible before sealing to remove excess air) along with 2 or 3 of those adsorbent sachets of the sort one often finds in medicines and moisture-sensitive electronics packaging (Bayer aspirin products always have one in them, for example)(ETA: If I remember correctly, athletic shoes frequently have one or two in the box. SO, just do some shoe shopping before you go to the bank, cuz you really should replace the sachets every time you open the ziploc bag.) If you have a vacuum-sealing food storage device, this would be a good solution as well, though less user-friendly for opening, closing and later reopening and closing in a bank vault. Remember, the Dead Sea Scrolls survived as long as they did because they were stored in one of the driest environments on Earth...

If you want to get really correct in storing paper docs and digital media, go to the experts at the Library of Congress for their recommendations. Here's a good place to start:
http://www.loc.gov/preserv/careothr.html

Enjoy your treasure, and preserve it for future generations as well...

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
...And if you ever get to the point where 'sharing' becomes more attractive than 'owning' this important piece of our history... Well, we'll all be here waiting for you to post some (meaning, 'all', heh-heh) copies of your scans in the BlueSun Room.

But I'm not rushing you. You paid for the right to some exclusivity. 'Someday' is a good enough answer for us...

P.P.S.
Don't have a scanner? Go to your neighborhood Kinko's, or use a digital camera on highest resolution (no 'digital zoom', though), just like "Bond... James Bond" would do. Ideally, you want a full-color scan, rather than a monochrome one from a fax-printer combo, because the pages are different colors, use of hilighters, etc.

P.P.P.S
If you ever do post scans of the doc on the Internet, be sure to use Photoshop, or a freebie like The GIMP to 'black out' the autographs with a digital editor. We know you've got 'em, and is there anyone who wants their 'payroll signature' posted on the InterSnare?

I figured it would be, seeing as how the word is meant to be a new version of "God damned" or "Goddamn"--neither of which, last time I checked, are allowed on network TV. ("Damned"--yes. "Goddamned"--no.)
Sure would have been nice if FX had picked up Firefly and aired it at 10pm. Then we would have had all manner of grown-up stuff (like in "Rescue Me" and "Nip/Tuck") in the 'verse!

You're very generous to share these notes--thank you!

What do you think of this alternate theory about Adam's last note: is it possible it refers to Jayne's thoughts about Mal? Might Adam have been reminding himself not to give the line too much hostility?

This is something I've wondered about Jayne and Mal--as portrayed by Adam, how well does Jayne regard the captain?

Just speculatin'. Cuz it's fun. Thanks again for the fodder!

DONCOAT

To all and sundry,

Thank you so much for all the kind remarks.

In earnest, I debated a long time before deciding to post anything about winning the auction. I thought it might stir up jealousy and ill feelings, especially if anyone else here at FFF was in the bidding.

But instead you have made me feel all Kayleed. Browncoats really are the best!

Here's a shout out to MakesUsMighty, my colleague and bestest Browncoat buddy, and the other two 'coats who had the fun of being present at the "grand opening" of the package from Adam. MuM was supportive about my going public, so you all owe him a nod.

Whew, now I feel like somebody should hand me an Oscar or something.

Zoid, thanks for the suggestions and advice. I'll have to see about getting some dessicant packs. I know that it's possible to "bake out" a used pack so it can do its job again. One question: would storing the script on its back be all right if there's nothing printed on the back? My safe deposit box won't hold it on edge, but I could get a different one if it's critical. Oh, and as to the value, I'm a bit skeptical. Take a look at the other TV show scripts on eBay; even rare ones sell for hugely less than I bid. Ultimately, the dollar value isn't what matters anyway.

FollowMal, thanks for the link to Whedonesque. That item was posted by James from California Browncoats, the folks who are running the auctions. Since I've "outed myself" I'm more than happy to see this thread linked from anywhere that's appropriate!

I thought about that. It's possible, of course, but I don't think so. It doesn't read like a direction (e.g. "remember to say this friendly-like") -- I don't see why that kind of comment would be so highly emphasized (exclamation, two underlines).

It looks to me like what I described it as -- Adam deciding that he really likes this Jayne guy.

Of course, only Adam knows (if he even remembers). If he should care to drop by and discuss it, I wouldn't try to stop him...

I feel your pain. There is no way my husband would go for it either. He's a fan. Just not the drooling wreck that I am. :-)

Just today, Jane Espenson in her blog said that for a spec script one sends in: "Use strong brass brads."

Unless the people who initially put the scripts online got it wrong ("Flyspy" said they were trying to be very careful about not introducing errors and not correcting existing errors), there is more than one correct spelling. As the question "Is 'gorram' Chinese?" has come up a bit, I added it to my Chinese Pinyinary FAQ ( http://fireflychinese.home.att.net/resources.html#faq) with all the uses in the scripts, here simplified:

- "gorramn" ["Serenity, Part 1"; "Serenity, Part 2"; "The Train Job"; "The Message"; Serenity movie]
- "gorram" ["Bushwhacked," "Ariel," "Heart of Gold," "Objects in Space"]

- "gorramn it" ["Jaynestown"]
- "gorram it" ["War Stories," "Trash"]
- "gorramit" ["Trash"]
- "gorramnit" [Serenity movie]
- "gorrammit" [Serenity movie]

- "I'll be gorramned" ["Jaynestown"]

- "I don't give a good gorram" ["War Stories," "Heart of Gold"]

Note that Joss himself seems to have written "gorramn" in the pilot and the movie but "gorram" in "Objects in Space."

Thanks again for sharing your bounty.

Congratulations, DonCoat!!! I'm happy for you! That's pretty gorramn shiny!

Re: "gorramn" -- I never knew, for sure, how it was spelled, but I always assumed it had an "n". (Or does it? Based on the last post, I'm still not entirely sure... although it's hard to disagree with the real script of the pilot. I'd say that's pretty trustworthy.)

I would think storing the document flat would be preferable to on end. Dessicant packs should be small enough to fit in the ziploc (pressed flat to remove excess air) without touching the document itself; avoid lying them on top of the paper materials. I was only saying to store the archival DVD/CD +/- R/RW on its edge. Laying an optical media disk on its side shortens its life considerably, according to the experts.

As to the document's eventual worth:
Yeah, if all we ever get is 1/2 a season and one movie, you're probably right.

But, I've still got a very strong feeling that the old girl will fly again, and when she does -- barring hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc. -- she is gonna soar like a leaf on the wind...

Just imagine if you'd been lucky enough to obtain an original shooting script complete with page changes of the original Star Wars, signed by the principal cast, writer and director.

That's where I think the Firefly franchise is heading, good Lord willing and incompetent studio execs don't totally muck it up...

One way or t'other, I'm sure it'll be a prized possession, and one that you'll want to properly preserve. If this discussion has made you seriously consider taking steps to do so, then I'd also advise you to search the Internet for expert advice -- or even *ulp!* pay one to preserve the document for you.

Just don't forget to scan the entire document into a digital format first!

That way you can enjoy it without having to touch (contaminate) it.

And once you've scanned it, burn it to an optical disk and vault at least one of those as well, like I said before. If I were doing it, I'd probably keep the document images on at least two hard drives (in PGP'd folders), at least two thumb drives stored in a fireproof lockbox, and at least two optical disks (likewise in the fireproof lockbox) around my house. That's what I do with my tax records, birth certs, marriage license/cert, USAF discharge papers, mortgage docs, etc.

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
A fireproof lockbox of the sort I'm talking about -- large enough to hold Pendaflex hanging file folders and other assorted valuables -- runs c. $45 at Walmart. For example, search on: Sentry Fire-Safe® Security File, or Honeywell .62 Cubic Ft Fire and Waterproof Safe at walmart.com. I've a couple of the Honeywell makes -- cuz their watertight -- stored in the basement, where I reckon the least exposure to heat would result in case of fire, least exposure to generalized Wrath Of God in case of tornado.
