I got my "Done The Impossible" DVD today and of course, it rocked!!! It was amazing to see all the other fans sharing with us how they came to know and love Firefly, got to see a couple of FFF.net folk, and how they had their hand in doing the impossible.

I will always be eternally grateful to the "Originial Browncoats" for their love, devotion, and hard work they put in to give us the Big Damn Movie. They definitely deserve all the praise and kudos for such an achievement.

But...with all that they have accomplished I cant help but feel "useless" and "not worthy" to call myself a Browncoat. I'm one of those fans that came after the BDM was out on DVD. I've bought a couple of boxsets, shirts, books, etc... but it doesnt even come close to what they did on the documentary. I feel as if, the people who've been there since the beginning, that they are the athletes at the Olympics and I'm the lady passing out the water. (no offense to anyone who has done this) Yeah I've seen the Olympics but that doesnt make me an Olympian. Ok, thats enough of that metaphor because I'm not even sure if I can understand it.

What is the definition of a "Browncoat"? I completely love the series and its one of the few things in my life thats stable and it makes me happy but I'm one of the few that cant go to shindigs, conventions, screenings because of where I live and how much money I have. It's like "when can I be a part of the big picture too?" I dunno...maybe I'm just sad because I came late and I'm not sure what I can actually contribute. Are there specific rules or actions that must be done to be called a true Browncoat?

This one I have to think about for awhile. Maybe do some reconsidering.

Thank you to all who love Firefly and work hard to keep it going.

I think a person is a Browncoat when he/she does at least most of the following not only buys the DVD's a minimum of twice, watched the movie a few times in cinema, maybe bought some t shirts, bought some of the books, care's enough that you join a Firefly/Serenity forum,& most of all love's Firefly so dear that you live, eat, breath Firefly.

I think a person is a Browncoat if they're a big enough fan to care whether or not they're a Browncoat :p

But I only got into Firefly the week before Serenity got released in theaters, so maybe I'm biased.

Universal greenlit Serenity because they wanted to work with Joss and thought Serenity could become a viable franchise for them. The original fans deserve much credit for campaigning to keep the show on the air after it got cancelled but in terms of giving the movie to us, it really had nothing to do with them.

And don't sell yourself or the newer Browncoats short. I can only speak for myself, but the enthusiam of every new fan of the 'Verse has really helped me maintain my own dedication to the show. Thank you.

Those of us who work in the entertainment industry often times marvel at what work goes on to some great commercial or critical success, and what work goes nowhere. A Universal rep had said there was some buzz during the time the Can't Stop the Signal campaign got rolling about moving the picture's release date forward. This was because they were shocked at how high the movie was testing. "Better than Star Wars tested," was one quote I remember. But, fate is fickle with these big, expensive films. If you've ever complained about how formulaic a movie is, it's because someone's just trying to alleviate some financial risk.

Serenity didn't do what we'd all hoped. Does that make us all bad, bad Browncoats? No. In fact, as Joss himself has said so many times before, the movie shouldn't have even been made in the first place. It was a crazy idea that just might have worked. Universal took a risk, and didn't loose. This thing will stay around, much as we BC's have, for some time to come. Your very presence here on this fansite earns you your brown coat. Wear it with pride, for you are made mighty!

Odds language! But if you have Serenity/Firefly on anything - if you log into this site more than once a day, if you have ever used the word Shiny or Gorram. Throw away you black coats - cause you need a brown one!

I think you can call yourself a browncoat if you see the movie or series and realize that you've just witnessed something incredible. I mean anyone who saw the BDM or series and thought enough about it to look for more stuff about it on the web, and there-by stumble across this site, join and post....thats proof enough for me

That answer the question?

Seriously, though, I'm with WTE: if you care enough to ask that question, it's already answered.

you know, if you hadn't said anything, that would've gone completely unnoticed and if you really disapproved, the least you could do would be to censor it in your quote

i'd've said anyone who wants to can call themselve's a browncoat, it's an expression of interest in and love for the series to call yourself that, and if you're into it enough to want the title then you're into it enough to be one

regardless of material serenifly possessions and dedication to the site

dq, I've been a browncoat since the first episode aired on F*x, and IMO a browncoat only needs to do two things:

1) love the show and/or movie
2) do what they can to share that love and introduce others to the show/movie

Yes, back on topic... sorry, it's all those pics of Nathan.. they contribute to my inability to think straight. And I have enough trouble with that anyway.

I believe that the only requirement for being a Browncoat is that you love the 'verse. Along with that love will come a desire to share that joy with others and to want more. Also hand and hand with that is the need to be with other folks who feel the same way. That usually always means coming here. Then you can't leave. You don't want to. Why would you? Just like Serenity, this is home.

YLess,

I'll bet they would tell you not to. They would tell you that they are lifted up each time a new person joins and says those magic words about loving Firefly. They would tell you that all the new folks, each and every one, means hope for the future. They would say that we're needed... because they're getting tired of doing it all themselves and they will appreciate our help.

We aren't inferior. We're mighty too. And they'd be the first to say so. I'd bet it.

I think ALL of us that help keep the dream alive are Browncoats... Maybe not veteran Browcoats (yet), but browncoats just the same...

Every unit gets FNGs, and soon enough they become "The old hands"...

Besides, We'll get our chance to do our part, cause this fight ain't over by a LONG shot.. While others fall by the wayside, we're still here swinging... "The person that won't quit, that just keeps going, gets the job done".

I've loved Firefly since the first time I saw the series and made gorram sure that I saw Serenity on Opening Night, but never really considered myself an actual Browncoat until I was talking about the show with new friend and she said "Oh, you're a Browncoat too?" In my opinion anyone who loves Firefly and Serenity and appreciates how truly shiny they are is a Browncoat.

In my opinion you answered your own question. My deffinition of a Browncoat is as you described above. If you love the series and it makes you happy, you're a Browncoat. In my opinion, it doesn't matter how much you've done compared to anyone else. Those who have the funds to make it to conventions, screenings, as well as buying multiple copies of the BDM and BDS, and other merchandise, while a GREAT force for the cause of the Browncoats, What I believe makes them and those who can't do those things, Browncoats, is a DEEP seeded love for the 'verse.

P.S. I've been a Browncoat since the begining in 2002, but, as I am unemployed I did not have the funds to do things others have done I also live in Maryland and distance is a problem. I have judged for myself whether or not I am a Browncoat. Not pitted against others, I decided on my own that I was indeed a Browncoat.

Hi, DQBaby76.

I'd just like to say that I know how you feel. It's hard not to feel inferior when you're new and haven't done as much, even when others say it's okay. I only discovered the show a few months ago and sometimes I wonder if I even belong on this site. I mean, I had no idea... when I first found this place, "Browncoat" seemed like just a synonym for "Firefly fan". But then I learned more and more about the existing Browncoats and the word took on a whole new meaning and carried so much more weight, what with the original Browncoats, the Browncoats who participated in trying to save Firefly, the Browncoats who seem to own every piece of merchandise ever made, the Browncoats who've met the BDHs and gone to conventions, etc.

Heck, even being an original fan of something sometimes doesn't feel like enough, compared to some fans... I'm an original Everwood fan who's watched that show since Season One. I own some Everwood stuff, too (though, trust me, there isn't half as much cool Everwood stuff as there is Firefly). But, when the Save Everwood campaign began (FYI: Everwood was also canceled, like Firefly), I still felt very guilty that I couldn't do as much as other fans. As a 16-year-old (then) with no job... how could I donate money? How could I travel across country to see the Ferris Wheel? I couldn't and it upset me. But, did it make me any less a fan? I don't think so. I did what I could. I wrote countless letters and e-mails; still do. Most importantly, though, I carried and still carry a passionate love for that show in my heart. Just like I now do for Firefly.

Bringing this around to my actual point... a tip for when you're not feeling too shiny about your fanhood and doubting whether or not you deserve a Browncoat... don't fuss over what you've bought or how long you've been around. After all, even if we woud like to go back in time and see the premiere, buy the DVDs the 1st day the came out, etc., there's nothing any of us can do about it now. I like to think of it this way:
We, the new fans, are new recruits. We're here now, even if we couldn't be before, and we hold the 'verse very dear to our hearts. If and when the BDS is made or the series returns... we'll be there. Firefly fans both old and new will be there to watch, obsess, spread the love, share the signal, etc. Even if some feel we new fans deserve our coats now... and it sure does feel good to hear them say that ... it is hard to agree sometimes. But, I think we'll have our day to feel like we've earned our coats, too.

Thank you Lissa37.

I appreciate everything that you wrote. I completely agree with you about wanting to earn our Browncoats and I think we will too.

Thank you everyone for putting your thoughts in, you have showed me that we are all the same. That it doesnt matter how long one as been here and all that. All that matters is that we all have the same goal in mind and the same desire to know this 'verse inside and out. Now I still struggle with the journey and hope of seeing her fly again but at least I know that I have great company along the way.

Take Care all and stay all shiny like.
