Yup! It's a cool place to be. It's only slightly trollish upon occasion, and generally polite. Not too bad.

I can't help but think that Joss' little epilogue was very much aimed at Firefly/Serenity. He wouldn't be telling people reading Whedonesque to keep the faith and so on about something new. Most of the rest are covered. QED.

ShadowLeopard, I too see you point, but isn't it possible that Universal or FOX or anyone who might be showing a little interest, simple doesn't want to have anything public right now?

A Iron in the Fire, is simply a beginning. Something that might heat up, but it could take some time.

The most rabid fans of Whedon and the most in need of a litle Faith would seem to be SereniFly fans.

I say Keep the Faith and Spread the Love and that is what I intend to continue to do.

Don't brand the fans, brand the network executives. They're the ones most likely to stray.

I'm sure it's a Firefly reference. Unless Joss plans on starting to deal in blackmarket beagles.

"If they move, kill 'em"

I saw that and immediately wanted to reply "Unless it's the captain!"

Then I remembered that I don't have an account at Whedonesque.

Then I scrolled down and within the first ten comments not one but two people had already said exactly that.

>He's a writer by craft - were he actually wanting to hint at a revival or second movie, it would probably be easier to pick up than vaugely saying he "had other irons in the fire."

Not really. Until contracts are signed and other obligations are completed, Joss wouldn't be allowed to say anything.

And having just returned from WorldCon in Anaheim where Tim Minear and Jane Espensen hinted that nothing was in the works at the moment, this post by Joss is quite encouraging.

As Book said, "I don't care what you believe, just believe it."

I'll believe and hold out hope until Joss tells us to give it up.

*Bump*

Well I've gotta say that any hope of a new series or BDM is better'n none at all. Even if it is in very vague form. Joss talking in riddles or code doesn't bother me. What would happen to this site and the ppl that love FF if someone went to Joss' site and found that he had written " That's it. No more Firefly ever. It's DEAD. Get over it!"

People are always looking for something solid when it may not be the right time for information to be let out. It's not a good idea to say something then have to eat your words later. The thing to do may be to speak in rhyme. Then if something doesn't work out you can always say you were talking about something else. You know get "political" on their a$$.

Oh well, just some thoughts, Z

As 11thHour pointed out, what makes the closing comments significant is that he conspicuously does not mention Serenity or Firefly at all in the post. The last time he directly adressed the status of all things Whedon, the word on Serenity was that he was still waiting for the phone to ring. I believe that if nothing had changed, he would have directly addressed Serenity and Firefly with a similar statement. So while that doesn't mean anything's a go, it sure seems like that phone finally rang! (I just hope it's not a telemarketer, or something...)

Hey , if you wanna handle the necrophilia , the rest of us will continue with the life support .

Don't worry about bringing everyone down . No one has ever done it yet ! When Firefly was knocked down to the mat , there were a lot of trolls around , saying 'neener , neener' and similarly intelligent drivel , and what have they brought down except everyone's estimation of THEM ?

Enjoy your opinion . That's just what it is . And we'll support and defend your right to it , but if you think you can 'bring everyone down' , your opinion of yourself needs a little "lookin' to" .

Anyone else notice that "If They Move, Kill 'Em" is the only bit in that last paragraph that's capitalized?

It occurs to me to wonder... how well does Joss actually remember his own dialog? Is it possible that he thought that was a direct quote?

Actually, "If They Move, Kill 'Em" is a famous line from the movie The Wild Bunch. But that film is a classic Western... so there's the connection to Firefly/Serenity right there.

Joss is a gifted writer, he chooses his words for a reason... and he also knows his audience. Tossing that last cryptic paragraph to his update was the equivalent to dropping fresh chum in the water.

Feeding frenzy!!!

To adapt Simon's line from Safe:

"He's trying to tell us something. I think there's a code."

Is anyone else (a Browncoat that's a fan of the H star R) always reading Whedonesque as Whedon-skew? I know somebody is. Don't deny it. You loves the Strong Bad!

Okay, this is something that I learned from South Park, so bear with me:

"Some other little irons in the fire, when they're hot I'll pull 'em out and brand you."

All right, so iron. Iron's a vitamin, but if you take it in small amounts it can kill you.
What else can kill you? Jumping off a building could kill you. What happens in buildings?
People do office work and talk about things around the water cooler. Water! It's the giver
of life. Give life, but almost take it away. To go away, and to come back, like Arnold in
Terminator 2. A sequel. The Terminator came from the year 2029. But that's ridiculous. Hmm,
take 2 from 9 and and what do you get? 7! So that means that a BDS will be premiering
in 2007. Um, aaaand, season 2 will be out not long after that. Yay! I cracked the code!
This, ladies and gentleman, is the power of positive thinking. And several antidepressants
I could name.

Okay... Joss is a writer. But he also tends to spiral off into odd tangents to that seem to amuse him. Don't make me dig up his "Nathan smells like turnips" quote on Whedonesque! :) He likes to play with words (being a writer), and I'm sure he enjoys making us laugh with his sometimes-bizarre humor. But I really doubt he puts a lot of thought into his posts at Whedonesque. By that, I don't mean he's just posting randomly and without care; rather, that he is giving his fans updates while being witty. He doesn't proof his messages, which are filled with spelling and grammatical errors--so I really doubt these messages are anything more then one-offs to his fans.

Now, as to his final lines sounding "Fireflyish", to that, I say, "he created Firefly." He has expressed a passion for the language he used for Firefly, so it doesn't surprise me when he posts in that vernacular. So it's in his brain. And it might leak out sometimes. And remember, when talking about killing ‘em if they move, he was talking about toads. He could have been more clever if he was hinting at something; instead, I'm sure he was just referencing his previous lines about toads.

It's true that if there was something on the horizon, he would probably be so excited he would give us hints. But remember, too, that he came out and told us about the Spike movie, Ripper, and the Buffy cartoon... and look how well those productions turned out. Even if he talks about something explicitly, it doesn't mean it's moving into production. And in the case of the Buffy cartoon, even if it moves into production, it doesn't mean it will see the light of day.

Man. Now I'm bummed. I hate being realistic. I remain hopeful we'll see the 'verse again, but I really doubt this post is the word we're hoping for.

Stop squashing my hopes and dreams! This probably isn't the word we've been looking for, but it's in my nature to put too much stock in things. Anyway, when something else comes along all we'll say is "Oh no, that last one didn't mean anything, THIS is the one." Sometimes all you have to survive on is that little scrap of pie. And you eat that pie, gorramit, even if it is a little stale.

Now I'll just have to call you "DizzyDowner"!

Seriously, I agree it's not the word we're hoping for, but I think it just may be the hope we're wording for... or something. That is, it is a relatively comprehensive Joss-post on the state of his works, and I can hardly believe that he would completely ignore FF/S in that context. After all, he's been willing to share bad news - even no news - in the past.

Of course, none of our conjecture is provable, either way... So I'm just gonna take his advice and keep keeping the faith and spreading the love...

"DizzyDowner"--heh. I really need a PuppyUpper! (reference to an old, old, Saturday Night live skit) :)

And seriously, I'm not trying to crush anyone's hopes. I have them, too. I keep hope alive so much it's pathetic. I just think we're looking for something in Joss' words that isn't there.

To me, the absolute best thing we have to hang our hope on is that Joss loves his Serenifly world. I think no matter what, no matter how far in the future, no matter if series, BDM or made for TV movie, he would jump at the chance to revisit the 'verse. I get that feeling from most of the actors, as well.

So I keep hoping. Always hoping. Don't mean to be a buzz-kill, so sorry. :D

When I read what Joss wrote, I get a sense that there is some talking going on, probably a lot of what if's being discussed, but in Joss's head it's more positive then negative talks so he's probably excited cause execs are talking about it again and wanted to let us know in his special and elusive way.
It's a toss up on what it really means, but some of the cast members are going to be free to do a movie or tv series, are free to do a BDS or BDM, or just plain tied up in something already. So, the message basically says to be patient, somethings in the works. What that something is, is up in the air until Joss says, "Firefy/Serenity is back!"

I'm sorry guys, but I just don't see anything to be hopeful about in his message. I do not see him refering to Firefly any kind of way.

However, as stated before, Sci Fi will have an open slot in the first part of 2007. If you recall, when they were first making Firefly they had very short deadlines, like make it in a few days kind of deadline.

In September everyone is going to send "Snail-Mail" to some places in hopes of letting them know how much we love our movie/TV show. It's still in the works how we are going to do it and in the next few days it should be posted with something more then what I am saying now. I am sure everyone knows what I am talking about and everyone is planning on helping out.

With that said, regardless if anything was said in JW's message was ment for us or not, we have a great chance at making this thing happen.

The slot is open, the time will come when our "movement" is taking place, they will have enough time to make it happen and we may get our wishes in 2007.

I do not care about any other show (other then the Football related). Sorry, I am a little upset that JW is talking/thinking of anything but Firefly. I hope everyone understands where I am coming from.

Just two quotes, you tell me where I got 'em, if you like, but they always make me think of Firefly-

"Don't say anything...I'll believe."

and

"No surrender while I still breathe!"

Hint, one's from a sappy old movie I love too well (if that's possible), and the other is from my favorite 'Verse, before Firefly.

I hate to bring everyone down, but I am starting think we're reaching the point where it stops being lifesupport and turns to necrophilia. We are approaching a year out from the movie; almost all the actors, writers, directors, etc., have moved on to other projects. Unless new non-commentary content is announced by the end of the year...

Yeah, I sometimes misplace the faith too. But then I remember that I have been in this position 3 times before. Those of us Doctor Who fans campaned nearly 20 years before the BBC really listened and brough back the TV series. Lots of fan stuff happened in between. Then there was Farscape... the cast moved onto other projects but us fans bombarded the network - mail, emails, petitions, conventions - and we got the mini series to tie things up!
Of non SF programmes that this has happened to while I was a fan (although my husband will tell you this is a SF/Fantasy programme, especially the last few series) JAG was cancelled after its first season (just like Firefly), but those of us who believed did the usual and it was picked up by another chanel and ran for 10 years! I believe it holds the record for the longest running, non police, drama show.

See if you can hold and keep the faith. Often the impossible happens.

Definitely - The Diz speakuth the truth.

Here is Joss' last message directly to the Browncoat people:

It starts..

Quote:

"Ahh! Spider! Spider!

No wait. Lint.

Ahh! Lint! Malevolent lint!

Oookay, where was I? Um, time of sadness... transition... live forever in our hearts.... "

Ya get the picture. As far as I know -- and I have been acheckin' every few months -- nothing is in the works yet. Sad? Yes, definitely. Sci-fi isn't interested in another series, Joss won't touch FOX (and they probably won't touch Joss), yadada. And, more importantly, Universal aren't callin' for the simple reason that from a normal sequel franchise point of view, it just hasn't done the business associated with making sequels in the industry.

He is, however, working on the 2nd set of Serenity comics at the moment. And I'm told we'll see a character to make us squee in them.

Does this mean we should all give up and go home? Well, you know, I am at home when I write this. I'm well fed (well, fat), happy and not planning to go anywhere. And I'm totally keeping ahold of my Serenity DVD. If the money turns up, press the red button (and watch the universe explode... KAPOWA!)

Aha! So there IS a hidden message. If they can do a movie based on Disney's attraction, "Pirates of the Caribbean," then obviously they can do one on "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride." Clearly Joss has been tapped for that feature.
