There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I remember that from a couple of years ago before Universal released any artwork. I can't recall the fans name, but I think his first name is James, and he has done other artwork from the 'verse as well. Hopefully someone else has a better memory than mine. The last time I remember seeing anything from him was about a week ago there was a link to his site over on the OB, but I can't find that thread at the moment. The latest artwork he has featured is a painting of River in the pose used in the official Universal movie poster.

If I'm not mistaken, he is also featured in the Done the Impossible dvd, but I don't have that at the moment. Sent it to my son juat a few days ago.

ETA: Okay, found it, just took a few minutes since I'm more used to searching for stuff here. His name is Jason Palmer, and you can check out his work here - http://www.jasonpalmer.net/Gallery%20Enlargements/river.html

You can see the poster by clicking on the "Gallery Page 2" link at the top of the page, then clicking on the Firefly logo on the bottom right of the next page.

I met Jason Palmer at Moonlight Rising in the dealer's room while he was wokring on a drawing of Mal and Jayne from Serenity. He is an AMAZINGLY talented artist and so nice. (I was a total fangirl and introduced myself just so I could gush over his talent for a while). I wish I could afford a bunch of his works! The new River one on his website is so cool, but there's no sign of the Shindig montage pic he had at the convention....hmmm.....

I have been lookin for the same thing. I went to his site and it appears that he doesn't have anymore of those. I think I will email him and find out if their are any plans on more being made.

I just sent them an email and this is the response I got. Looks like this might be the wrong person.

Hi Brad,
This is a second email I got today regarding the "retro" movie poster. Can
you please tell me if there was a posting somewhere you saw about this? The
thing is, there is no "retro" poster - there is the licensed Serenity
limited edition poster which Jason created last December and the limited
edition has not run out yet. Can you send me a link to where you saw this
information from? I will need to correct it.

In the meantime, everything you see on our site is the current licensed
Serenity artwork, with the large portion of proceeds going to Universal
studios. There is no other artwork for Serenity - Jason is the only one
holding the license.

Thanks and regards, Yelena Palmer

It's certainly possible that someone else took Jason's work and manipulated into the poster. I do recall it being posted here in the Blue Sun Room sometime in the spring of 2004, shortly after we got the word of the greenlight for Serenity.

Hi everyone,
This is Yelena Palmer - Jason's wife (we've probably met at some of the shows.) Actually, some of your posts are right on the money - this image was indeed stolen from Jason's Firefly piece and someone is apparently using it without our permission or without Universal's permission. Given that we are paying a large sum of all of our sales to Universal in an effort to make a difference, and they are not, this is very upsetting. If anyone knows more about this vendor, I'd appreciate an email to yelenapal@earthlink.net
look forward to seeing everyone at Flan II!
Thanks and regards

Yelena

Yeah, this poster was one of a series of 'retro' posters designed by a member of this forum and posted in the Blue Sun Room for fun: as fanart and for use in spreading the word. They were never sold or anything. As far as I know they were never actually printed (except, perhaps off of someone's home computer). Yes, they use 'stolen' images, but so does virtually every other piece of fanart. Even fanfic is an infringement of copyrights...

Edited to add: I defer to 11thHour's knowledge of the shortlived Zazzle shop (below).

Edited again to add: Ok. Now I defer to Tiger (even further below)!

Well, I had already been typing a message when I came back and saw this request.

No disrespect at all intended... just offering some background info on this image if people are curious.

This fan made retro Serenity poster appeared a while back, as people have already noted... and I can't remember who made it either. For a very brief time it was offered for sale through Zazzle, or some similar service, but was yanked soon afterward.

By using someone else's artwork without permission, and incorporating the official Universal Studios logo in a format which mimics a real movie poster, this item was destined for removal by that printing service.

I think a few fans may have purchased copies before it disappeared, but I haven't seen it offered any where else for sale since. However, the nature of the Internet being what it is, once an image gets on the web... it lives on forever.

I think I MIGHT be able to shed some light on the situation since I've been a Firefly fan from the beginning and I've been visiting this board for years - but mostly because I DESIGNED THAT POSTER.

Here it is with a few others I made up a while back when "Serenity" was first green lit -

http://www.jsoule-webdesign.com/posters/

They are not for sale and never have been. Even so, all the artwork is original EXCEPT the character sketch in the poster above which I snagged from another blue sun item here - http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=1320
- to which I gave credit when I first posted it on this site.

It's just some typical Blue Sun, fan-with-too-much-time, trying-to-help-the-verse, artwork. I can't believe anybody cares - I'm so flattered! Even more so when I realize that people actually think Jason Palmer did the poster. I'm just a casual photoshopper, that guy has REAL talent.

Believe it or not I caught some guy in Boston selling my wanted posters at a comic con and claiming them as his own. This stuff sure gets around!

EDIT:

I just read her post, and I'll shoot off an email to her personally, just to make sure nobody's really worried their stuff is being stolen.

Yeah, after Serenity got greenlit, we were all making a bunch of fan posters here in the Blue Sun Room. I clearly remember seeing this. I don't think it was ever sold officially, mostly used for desktop wallpaper or, as someone did with my posters, mobile phone wallpapers.

However I haven't been to any conventions where this could have possibly been sold.
