I assumed it was "Hoss Wee-dun"
But my friend think's it's "Joss Wee-dun" with a hard J sound.

It is a bit confusing. Jesus is pronounced "Hey zeus" but that is the Spanish American way. Since Joss doesn't look Spanish, I pronounce it with the hard "J".

Tieka,
who just watched Die Hard III.
"He was saying 'Hey, Zeus' not Jesus"

For a long time, I thought it was pronounced all swedish like

"Yohss Weedon" is how i thought it was prnounced. Glad I got that cleared up quickly... some embarassment may have ensued.

For what it's worth... "Joss" means "Luck" in Chinese. JW said (in old interview) his parents were going through a hippy phase when he was named.

BTW: "Scandinavian Rastafari" :biggrin

You're close. I read a quote from Joss himself saying that everyone incorrectly pronounces it "Josh." He said that it is actually pronounced like Hoss from Bonanza, except with a "J." I feel he meant that it rhymes with Hoss, not that it is Hoss. Therefore, I am pretty certain that it is a hard J.

It's all coming into focus now... the Chinese name, the Hoss from Bonanza reference. All we're missing is a childhood collection of Coleoptera Lampyridae.

How does one pronounce Jonwes's name?

I assumed it was "Honwes", but my friend thinks it's Welsh and is therefore actually pronounced "Martin Brundle".

Since someone else dredged up this very old thread I thought it best to correct this misconception. You must have misheard what Joss said in that interview because his parents did not name him that, he adopted the name himself or it was a nickname given him. His birth name is Joseph Hill Whedon.

At one of the Serenity conventions, Nathan gave us lessons in how to pronounce the names of his co-stars; Alan Tudyk was "Two and" followed by him pointing to a certain part of his anatomy. Gina Torres: "Gy-na".

He must get into lots of trouble.
