NICODEMUS

First things first, G'day from (currently) sunny South Australia.

Unlike many who can proudly state that they've been a Browncoat since '02 or the like, my history is much shorter. In fact, the first I had ever heard of Firefly was when I came across the Serenity trailer on Jurassicpunk.com.

After watching the movie I was hooked, and now consider myself a true Browncoat, except for the fact that my coat is black. This leads me to a question. Is it possible to be Goth and still consider yourself a Browncoat (not that I'm not the make-up wearing type, but goth nonetheless)?

My other main question is this: is there a Browncoats group in Adelaide? I know there's one in Sydney, having watched through all the extras on the Serenity DVD, including the hour-long Q&A session with Joss Whedon (dunno if that's a region 4 only extra, if so, did we miss out on stuff on the other versions?)

That's about it for now, just letting my presence be known here while I familiarise myself with the place and work out where (and where not) to post.

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Hi Nicodemus! A fellow Australian and fellow-biblical-name to boot! Welcome!

I found out about a few things here on FFF.net - but there are also Australian fan sites around - though I have really just put roots down here and stayed with my FFFFamily! I don't think any of the Aussies could claim to be from the earliest days coz when it finally aired on Ch7 it was 04 or 05 I think - I just discovered the 'verse about 4 months ago and that surprises a few folk here - I bet!

I am in Melbourne, and know of a couple fo Browncoats here - and ShinyKitten is from Sydney - we're both regular posters so if we put our heads together we'll probably find out some things for you! I am pretty sure that there was a charity screening of Serenity in Adelaide in June for Joss's birthday and I attended one here in Melbourne too...

You could also try this site -

http://www.serenitymovie.com.au/index.php

- which is the Australian fan site - I haven't really been there more than once or twice but if you are interested in connecting with fans in person you would be more likely to meet them there!

Oh - and welcome to the 'verse and to FFF.net - it's our home and now that you've found it please feel free to call it home too!

Love, Magdalena x x x

It was aired in Australia? Don't think it ever made it to Adelaide. Still, with the way channel 7 treats sci-fi shows, I think I'm glad that my first viewing of the series was on DVD, so that I could watch it at a decent hour of the day, in order, and not worry about any hiatus.

As for the name, it wasn't directly biblicly inspired (yay for atheism), despite most ppl thinking I got the name that way (except for some on the old stargate command site, who thought it was named after a Richard Dean Anderson character on one of his less-well-known shows). No, sad but true, the name is taken from that of an alligator in Tom Clancy's novel Clear And Present Danger (they threaten drug runners with being fed to the 'gator).

Anyway, I look forward to interacting with ppl on here more in the near (and hopefully also far-flung) future.

VERSEEXPLORER

Welcome Aboard, Nicodemus,
Most everyone in the States are asleep. I'm one of the night owls here. Folks on the East coast will be waking up soon. It's nice to have you on the site. Feel free to post where ever you want. And don't worry about the color of your coat. A true Browncoat shares the heart and soul of the show not the color of their coat. : )

We are a friendly group. If you ever need anything, just get on the Cortex and send us a Wave.

DONCOAT

Hi and welcome, Nicodemus! Glad to have you with us! Have a mug of Mudder's Milk and feel free to question the buffet.

I'm sure FollowMal will be around with your browncoat shortly, but if not, I run a little recycling shop and can offer a small selection of previously-loved 'coats.

As to your questions, I'm in the USA so can't help with the Oz groups. I can, however, tell you about the Region 4 DVD differences, since I have both the Region 1 version and the shiny tin box from the land down under.

You will be pleased to know that you have all the special features of the Region 1 version, and more. Why Universal denied us those extras I can't say, unless they have a Special Shiny Edition release in mind.

The only thing that you don't have is the cover art of the US release, but trust me, you're not missing much. Except llamas.

I think there may be some extra extras on the European DVD, but I don't know if they're any different from the Region 4 extra extras. Anybody have a comprehensive list?

By the way, have you found the Easter Eggs on the Firefly and Serenity DVDs?

Anyhow, again, welcome. Hope you find this place as welcoming and homey as I have. Chow's at ten, no need to dress!

Adam Baldwin singing "the hero of canton" and the Fruity Oaty bar ad? Yeah. The benfit of watching dvds on a computer rather than a proper dvd player means that finding easter eggs is often easier, since waving the mouse pointer around tends to locate all sorts of shiny goodies.

heya there Nicodemus!
nice to have another auzzie around...welcome to fff.net, it really rocks here and everyone is really nice!i hope you like it here.

yeah, alot of auzzie fans i know didn't see the show whilst it was on TV. i found it about six months or so before the movie came out...found out about the movie and tracked down the series so i would know what was going on in the movie.
i've checked out the Oz Serenity site that's mentioned above, it was cool, but this one is just so friendly and great that i haven't really gone to the Oz one...though i probably should, to try and find other Browncoats.

and the actual colour of your Coat doesn't matter..being a Browncoat is more a state of mind than anything else.
and while i'm not sure about resident goths, we do have a lot of metalheads around here...and we metalheads do wear a whole lot of black...

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome aboard Nicodemus! Glad to have you here w/ us!

Of course you can be a Goth and a browncoat. Browncoats don't descriminate. If you feel you are a browncoat, then you are.

Now of course being a browncoat you are obligated to go out and spread the word. You have to tell everyone you know about the show and the movie. Tell everyone to watch it, and if they can manage, to buy the dvds, especially the movie dvd. In order for us to have any sort of continuing story in our 'verse, we need to push the Serenity dvds.

Take care and keep flyin'!

Welcome home, Nicodemus (#22883)
If you're a gothcoat (izzat a word?) you might enjoy some of the Buffy/Angel stuff you'll find here along with SereniFly.

But we won't throw you out the airlock, oh no. It's right shiny to have you on the crew. We like to give the new recruits strawberries and Mudder's Milk, and then invite them up to the galley for a questioning of the buffet.

We here in the US are jealous of your shiny DVD-in-a-tin, as it seems to have more than any other.

Ignore the llamas. Unless they come up and bump you or try sharing your salad. Pesky things!

I know you'll find more Aussie browncoats -- one named "elk" comes to mind, and there are more around here somewhere. Best of luck!

Welcome to the shiny 'verse that is our site Nicodemus! I consider myself to be a true Browncoat and I prefer to wear black my own self. I really don't think the color of your coat matters, just that you are a Browncoat in spirit.

Why not? Being a Browncoat is a state of mind and only in some cases a fashion choice. 'Sides there's a good bet that any particular item of clothing you wear isn't really black but more a very dark shade of brown anyway. Pure black being rather unatainable by the textile industry.

Oh and welcome.

Oh dear, the first thing I thought of was the rat Nicodemus from Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.....but alligators are way cool, too!

Welcome. I hope there is a convention in your area soon. I need an excuse to go to Australia. I have always wanted to go, and I consider Nathan Fillion an excuse for just about anything!

There may be a convention in this country at some point (although they are rarer than the US, which seems to be having a con of some sort every week ).

However, it won't be my area, because a convention in Adelaide is rarer than snow, which is a once in 10-20 year event for us. If one that brings out Nathan or any of the other shiny cast members does occur, it'll be in Sydney, or maybe Melbourne.

If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. (Because ducks don't care about your politics, religion, skin colour, choice of music or even your haircut. They like everyone, provided you bring them food.)
