Dunno if this's already been posted (I get an error when I try to look at the Archived threads), but as I was listening to Firefly Talk #38, Eric reported that one of the astronauts on the next Shuttle mission is gonna be taking up the Firefly DVDs!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I'm in the process of reading the interviews & biographies of all the crewmembers, to try to guess who our mysterious benefactor is, based on who "sounds" most like a Browncoat!

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/sts117/index
.html

Anybody care to make a friendly wager?

EDIT: I know it's not Clay Anderson, because the Mysterynaut said, "I’ll take them with me and see if the ISS crew wants them, if not I’ll bring them back (after taking a few pictures with them) and give them to you," and Clay is gonna be staying up there.

But Clay seems to have a great sense of humor, so I think he's gonna take to Firefly the strongest!

plus Clay was added to the mission only a few weeks ago. now hopefully his added stowage doesn't bump our secret cargo off the flight.

...I understand that F*X is planning on covering the upcoming shuttle launch, live and in color. And in honor of the fact that a copy of "Firefly, The Entire Series" is being carried into the final frontier aboard the shuttle, they will cut away to a repeat episode of "24" before the solid boosters separate...

Sardonically,

zoid

P.S.
Can anybody recommend a particularly nasty disease to wish upon the PTBs at F*X? I've already got the ju-ju dolls and other talismans...

Shiny that you've got a contact in the press.

The local press exactly where I am here in Southampton UK are'nt great regarding this kind of stuff, but.... I'm contacting the local papers where they are having Can't Stop the Serenity showings, which is Manchester, Oxford, Edinburgh and London. I've also shot a few emails to the sciFi channels here and in the US, to Aint it cool news and the BBC given their recent coverage of the SciFi poll. Also as SciFi magazine appear to have already run a little column about CSTS.

When the BBC news talk about the shuttle launch I'm totally going to email them about Firefly going up since they are so boring all they talk about is how many times each crew member has been to space, the crew is made up of ??% female, the history of the space shuttle Alantis, be more interesting to vieweres to know that Firefly is going up instead of the usual bullshit facts.

we had a meeting today to review some items for the L-2 MMT tomorrow and I asked about the union strike issue and everyone seemed confident it would be no impact to the launch. there are enough non union folks that can perform the STS-118 preparations so it should no be an impact to LON requirements for STS-117. weather is 70% go for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

and for out2theblack I am setup to be able to email the shuttle with the song once you complete it. the file has to be less than 0.5MB though - ancient shuttle uplink capacity)

Quote:

Board Game, Sci-Fi to Ride Shuttle Atlantis to ISS
Author Tariq Malik

Seven U.S. astronauts and new girders and solar arrays are not the only riders for NASA’s space shuttle Atlantis set to launch late Friday.

Tokens for the family board game Monopoly and the science fiction film Serenity (not to mention its television show root Firefly) will catch a ride to the ISS aboard Atlantis during NASA’s STS-117 mission when it rockets spaceward at 7:38 p.m. EDT tomorrow night.

The Monopoly tokens are the little mover pieces for the Hasbro game’s Here & Now edition, which just happens to have NASA’s Johnson Space Center — the Houston training site for U.S. astronauts — as an available, according to the folks at Hasbro. Tucked away inside the 100-ton Atlantis are tiny versions of the Toyota Prius, New Balance Shoe, Labradoodle, Motorola Razr cell phone, Laptop Computer, McDonald’s French Fries and an airplane that serve as player pieces for the game, they added.

Whedon’s Serenity and Firefly, certainly a favorite for this space reporter, are apparently being carried in DVD form to take a permanent place on the ISS by an Atlantis crewmember.

For those of you under a sci-fi rock, Serenity is the name of the beloved Firefly spaceship helmed by Capt. Malcolm Reynolds.

Fans (called Browncoats) apparently gave the DVDs to the STS-117 astronaut in question and are tracking the sci-fi film/series’ launch at: http://www.breakingatmo.com/, where you’ll find an oh-so-cool image of Serenity flying past the ISS. Shiny!

Thanks to CaptainCoupi, whoever you are, out there for sending this bit along.

If Monopoly and Serenity aren’t enough for you, don’t worry. The space memorabilia experts over at collectSPACE.com will have a full workup on the personal effects to be carried spaceward by the STS-117 during their 11-day mission.

NASA’s STS-117 crew will deliver new trusses and solar arrays to the space station, as well a new crewmember. You can follow SPACE.com’s mission coverage here.

Good morning space fans,
Swanny has been busy this first two days so I havent gotten an emails yet. they do have a 2 hour crew off time tomorrow, so who knows maybe they will watch an episode or two :)

Yesterday saw a beautiful docking with the Space Station ( I am still pulling photos from the database). Today is the First of 4 Spacewalks. They will install the S3/S4 Truss segement today which is the big solar array on the starboard side of the ISS. They wont deploy the solar array wings until tomorrow.

The Mission Management team and the rest of Mission Control is still thinking about what to do with the bent blanket on the Left OMS (Orbital Manuvering System) Pod. The thermal blanket was torn loose and bent upwards due to aerodynamic loads during launch. The concern with this blanket is what amount of increased heating it will cause in the area during entry heating. If the blanket rips off during the lower portion under aero loads it is not a debris concern. The team is working options for tucking the blanket back down since it does have some memory for staying flat. If it is flat during entry heating it should not be an issue, but if it is bent up the disturbance to the plasma flow could cause damage to the underlying OMS Pod structure by causing a stagnation point and a hole that heat can get into, but not out of. In the past we have seen lost blankets and tiles that did cause survivable damage to the OMS pod. So the question the team is working is the extent of localized damage and if there is a concern for entry.

The team is also continuing to review ascent data (RADAR, WBS Tracking Planes, SRB Video, Ground Cameras) as well as the flight day 2 inspection data and so far there is no indication of areas for concern.
