CANTER

Hi,

I've been visiting this site for a few months now.... being really desperate for anything Firefly. Haven't participated till now since what I know about these sort of boards are scary and should be kept secret.

But I'm jealous. (Imagine me glowing with a slight greenish tint)

You guys don't realise how nice you have it.

I'm cursed with an insatiable passion for the 'verse, while being stuck in a country with almost no access to it.

Firefly was aired here in 2003 (I think). I was addicted. But then..... nothing.

I was ecstatic to hear about the possibility of a movie, and voted wherever I could.

But Serenity was not shown at our cinemas, it went straight to video/dvd. What heartbreak!

We can't buy the dvd's here, I had to import mine from the UK (got caught by the whole region thing which prevented importing from US)

We have no conventions on Firefly/Serenity. We can't meet any of the actors.

Can't buy any merchandise, 'cause our currency don't convert well to dollars or pounds.

Is there anybody out there in the same boat as me?

This is the way it is.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Hello, Canter. Welcome home. Glad to see you delurk and share a bit of info about your part of the 'verse, although it would have been nice if you had identified exactly where you are.

This gives me the opportunity to say something I've meant to say for some time now, and this applies to everyone, not just Canter.

Please include some information about yourself in your profile, at least a general idea of where you live, it doesn't have to be that specific. There have been many occasions when someone would make a comment that would be more understandable if I knew what country they lived in.

Again, Canter, welcome aboard. Glad to have you with us. Chow's in ten, no need to dress.

Of course it would have made more sense.

Wasn't thinking. That often happens when I go into rant mode.

I'm in South Africa. A tiny little town in South Africa called Brits, on the corner of no and where.

Welcome, Canter,
We are a friendly group. You are right, we don't know how lucky we are. I have a friend who recently moved to Ghana, Africa, and I found out that he can't get anything from iTunes, and Amazon.com doesn't ship to Africa. It is so exciting to hear that you have been a fan of Firefly since 2003, and that you were able to get a DVD of Serenity. You are a loyal Browncoat.

Worry not, I live in "middle earth" as well.
Well, I'm not in Africa, but access here is almost as good as yours.

Welcome to this part of the 'verse.

Welcome to the site, Canter... well, welcome to delurking. LOL
We're very glad you did.

I hope as merchandise becomes more available, that it will spread to S. Africa and other places that are having so much trouble getting stuff.
I also hope that as Joss and Nathan et al are involved with Equality Now, and EN does so much work in Africa that there will come a day when a convention is usual there.

Inspite of the fact that you are so isolated I am duly impressed with your loyalty and devotion. Believe me I share your passion too. This show is something you fall in love with. You don't just like it, you love it. Thank you for delurking and sharing with us. I hope you'll post often and enjoy yourself in our home which you're now a part of.

You need your 'coat. Everyone who joins gets their very own virtual browncoat.

*hands Canter a browncoat from the storeroom*

There you are... that means you're holdin' the line with us.

Make yourself to home, someone will likely be along and offer you food and drink. I am particularly fond of the ice planets and the shimmer wine. Yum!

Hey!
I have seen people from South Africa post on this board or on serenitymovie.org. Hmmm ...also just want to say that although I am in Montreal, Canada, my dad was born in South Africa! He is Indian, and grew up in Azaadville I think, outside of Jo'Burg. I went there twice actually in 1989 and in 1995. I msotly stayed in Zimbabwe though and visited my relatives for 2 weeks each time. (someone mentioned Zimbabwe, it is just north of South Africa, so interesting guesswork).

So take care of yourself.
Cheers.
Prakash
PS are you black, british, or afrikaans(I would use the term Boer, but I do not know if that term is a slur or not)?

PPS
in terms of items, arent there sci fi/cult merchants in around Jo'Burg, Durban or Cape town which you could order stuff through?

Just found a few users from south africa, by doing a gogole site search of this site using the search term south africa. Maybe you should create a thread looking for other South Africans?

So those are two users who have posted recently.

Hi,

Yip...SA blood flow through a lot of countries. We’re basically everywhere.

I’m a boer-tjie. We don't consider it as a slur, unless you use it in a derogatory slogan like “Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer”. We don’t like that.

I prefer being called a Boer before I'm called a "Rock-spider", which is wat English South African's call Afrikaans South Africans. And I don't like being called a Whitey, which is what Black South Africans call us. And I hate being called a SAFFA, which is what Australians in London called us.

I don’t know about any sci-fi merchants. I’m not all that clued up on searching. It’s very frustrating to be this ignorant.

But I’ll check out the links you gave…..Thanks.
