Hello Magnalena:

So chicken dance is all over this world. And you didn't have a camera. Well I am forming an image in my mind. Yes. Philippino youngsters in total amazement as woman flaps arms. Don't need photos, got it all right here in my head.

Must be fair.

Did you ever see movie "Animal House". They had that toga party where they fall on the floor and wiggled around like jello. I have done that. Oh yes, lying on a dirty dance floor wiggling around like a worm. I think it was to "Makes You Want To Shout." Does not work as well with any other song.

Magdalena, wish I could have been there with you. I would have joined you for that Chicken Dance in the Phillipines.

Traveler, that answers the question for us. It is a world wide tradition. Now I've got an image of you wiggling on the dance floor in true Animal House style.

Nicodemus, clap your hands loudly as you dance, and no one will hear those creaky joints. (or was that just your excuse because you don't want to shake your booty. )

Ya VerseExplorer, who needs pictures when the mind's eye can create far better images.

I am getting like Nicodemus. I have damaged my knee a couple of times and I don't dare put it through the rigors of the dancefloor anymore.

There's not much room in the goth/metal scene for booty shaking, unless it's to some of the cheesier 80s music. Ditto for handclaps.

Then again, Hello Minnesota did a song called "Handclaps are the new black".

Traveler, I guess you will be cutting out all of the wiggling on the floor move, but you could still do some slow dancing.

Nicodemus, thanks for helping me get in touch with the goth/metal scene. I must admit. I've never been there.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

The Barenaked Ladies made thier whole audience do the chicken dance when I saw them in concert once. They started out all slow, with just the movements, so everyone was doing them along, and then they sped up and started playing the music! Those guys are so much fun.
And I remember doing it at the roller rink. And I had to (ugh) sing it for choir one year. Yes, it has lyrics.
I've never been a big dancer. I enjoy it at times, but I don't like being in a huge crowd of people and dancing, trying to stay out of everyone's way. I like to dance in the privacy of my own home. And I think I'm far more graceful attacking the heavybag than I am when I dance, but maybe I'm wrong.
And no, there is an emote for everything

At the recentish Splendour In The Grass festival, Brian Wilson lead the crowd in a round of "Row, row, row your boat", which seemed somewhat appropriate, since that festival always gets rained on the whole time and turns into a mud-pit, if it doesn't flood.

See, My mom used to lead the chicken dance at the roller rink. For some reason she would also skate around with a 6ft flamingo pupptet she had put together...but that's a different story!

As to singing it...my god! It has lyrics?!?? WHY????
Myabe your choir director should get together with the one I had in high school. He made us sing a song called the farm song once. Believe me, you don'twant to be oinking ans winnying at a Christmas concert. I don't know what the man was tinking but it was an unpleasant experience.

Edit: And as to wedding dances, I have some great pics somewhere of my cousin doing the YMCA and (I mean really getting into it, not just the arm waving) apparently disco dancing at his sisters wedding. He's ussually a kind of reserved guy but you get a couple drinks in him and he will dance like mad at the drop of a hat.
He's actually quite good at it.

I had to delay leaving my home to come to the coffee shop this morning because one of my favorite songs came on (I don't know what it is, it's on a weird world music station) and I had to fling myself around the living room for a bit. It's a risky venture. I have a small living room.

Too funny that I get online and this thread's talking dance! Anyone here ever make a complete fool out of themselves on the dance floor to Taking Care of Business? That was the big one when I was a kid - that and Mony Mony - the Billy Idol version. Oh yeah!!

ok no chicken dance. During teacher work days( days when teachers are on contract to be there but the kids don't come to school that day) our vice principal would play that and make us all stop what we were doing and dance. She'd spot check rooms to make sure you were doing the chicken dance...However we confiscated her cd to prevent that

Sorry I haven't been here, but we had unexpected company. MisterG invited his brother to come down on the 13th and somehow brother misinterpreted and came down yesterday. He lives in another state and it's an 9-10 hour drive and he called us last night to say he'd be arriving in an hour...so we scrambled like monkeys and got the room ready and now we have company and I have a cold and my teacher friends are coming for potluck...so this weekend kind of bites...but at least next weekend I'll have plenty of free time.

Morning! How is everyone? I had a busy night of socializing and watching movies. Was nice. Several pretty people about, but they were mostly busy and I didn't catch anyone's eye. But still, fun times.
*sigh* Yes, the chicken dance has lyrics. It's a little kid kinda song. Don't know what my choir director was thinking. Usually he found us some pretty cool songs, but sometimes he was just strange. Christmas he was generally pretty good. I remember one year I refused to sing a song, though. He told me he would have to take my grade down if I continued to refuse, but I did anyway. It said something along the lines of 'kick down the rebel' I can't remember exactly anymore, but I just felt sick singing it. I was an Independent, even in Junior High!

Somewhere I have a picture of me dancing at my wedding. There was a lot of champagne involved, plus three inch heels.

I coined the phrase for (some and mostly) male dancing - 'like a frog on a hotplate'.

I, too, have buggered joints, so no longer mosh. Much. Went out to a works do with H, (friend is the drummer) and when they played a selection of The Cult and Sisters of Mercy, I felt impelled to dump my jacket, pull off my hairclip and revert to my scary student days. I ended up moshing with the roadies! H was slightly taken aback, but all his friends thought I was a proper Rock-chick. (Possibly a Rock hen by now - see, the Chicken dance again...)

Ah! That is an amazing song! *Sings* everybody look at your hands! though I always think of Turk from scrubs singing it.

I'm so, so sorry But I am going to have to shamfacedly admit to owning that Will Smith album. I honestly don't know what I was thinking! Thankfully I'm back on the straight and narrow now, you know, Soundgarden, ZZtop, NoDoubt, etc

NV: The only thing I remeber about that film (I didn't know who played the robot at the time) is the car, and of course, the shower scene!! mmmmmm naked Will Smith. I have it on good grounds that it was not a body double!

I don't know the chicken dance, but its probably better than the terrible Chicken Song, by spitting image. Look it up if you don't believe me!

James: I totally second MSG on that, much hotness.

Hi there SBDB... Good to see you - and I don't know if the chicken dance can be done sober so it might not be much better than the song you mentioned!! Of course the exception to this is when you are under age (sorry sweetheart - tis a joy of adulthood to make younger folk to silly things whilst we still have them under our authority!) and when you are crazy, and in a humid climate in the middle of the night with a group of gorgeous children who are laughing with you ... not at you! Madga, I'm sure your in bed already, but I just wanted you to know that I'm sure those young children were laughing WITH you!

PhoenixRose, I hope this doesn't bring back bad memories, but I did find the words to the Chicken Dance. I had no idea that someone sat down and wrote words for the tune.

The Chicken Dance
Do you wanna feel good,
wanna laugh and play? (let's laugh and play)
Wanna have some fun,
throw your blues away? (your blues away)
Are you feelin' sad?
Got a problem? - Here's the cure (we got the cure.)
Do the chicken dance;
make you happy for sure.
Reach out your arms and swing your partner.
Make like a bird and try to fly.
Come on out there you hens and roosters.
Just hook your arms now, and don't be shy.
Hey you're in the swing
You're cluckin' like a bird. (Pluck, pluck, pluck, pluck.)
You're flappin' your wings.
Don't you feel absurd. (No, no, no, no.)
It's a chicken dance,
like a rooster and a hen. (Ya, ya, ya, ya.)
Flappy chicken dance;
let's do it again.
Relax and let the music move you.
Let all your inhibitions go.
Just watch your partner whirl around you.
We're havin' fun now; I told you so.
Now you're flappin' like a bird
and you're wigglin' too. (I like that move.)
You're without a care.
It's a dance for you. (Just made for you.)
Keep doin' what you do.
Don't you cop out now. (Don't cop out now.)
Gets better as you dance;
Catch your breath somehow.
Reach out your arms and swing your partner.
Make like a bird and try to fly.
Come on out there you hens and roosters.
Just hook your arms now, and don't be shy.
Now we're almost through,
really flying high (bye, bye, bye, bye.)
All you chickens and birds,
time to say goodbye (to say goodbye.)
Goin' back to the nest,
but the flyin' was fun (oh it was fun.)
Chicken dance is the best,
but the dance is done.

I made a web site to introduce my friends to the 'Verse.

If I end up writing any of those lyrics into my philosophy and ethics exam answers, I'm going to do.. um, something. Not sure on exactly what yet though. I'll have to get back to you on that.

If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. (Because ducks don't care about your politics, religion, skin colour, choice of music or even your haircut. They like everyone, provided you bring them food.)

VERSEEXPLORER

So, sorry! I know I should have kept the words to myself, but they were starting to burn a whole in my brain. I thought it would release them if I posted them, but it didn't. I think they'll need to be surgically removed.

I made a web site to introduce my friends to the 'Verse.

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Yep, that was it. Oh, the pain!

James, I am in agreement with the rest of the ladies here

And I must apologize for going *poof* this morning. I fell asleep. Yes, right at the computer. Woke up and dragged myself to bed at some point, then woke up again much later and went and brushed my teeth. Probably slept a total of 10 or 11 hours. Not sure if it was the lack of sleep yesterday or the major drop in the barometer. It is now cold and rainy/sleeting Winter is truly on its way.

MAGDALENA

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Morning Mei Mei, Verseexplorer & Nico! (good luck on your exam...)

Hey Mei Mei - that's only 'cause you were tired you know - we're family and family want you to be well and healthy - so look after yourself and get all the sleep you need!

VerseExplorer... not going to sleep just yet - tis only 1.30pm so I have about 11 hours before I'll do that - but thanks for thinking of me Time zones... it strains the mind a bit - don't it?

So are we still pondering the inexplicably magnetic pull of the chicken dance? Hmmmmm... at least we all know we're not alone in this...

Love you all - Magda x x x

SHINYKITTEN

aaaaaahhh!!! *scream of terror* the BLOODY chicken dance!!! i did that sooooo much in my childhood...
i have had the hokey-pokey stuck in my head for 2 days- cause i got a shirt from cafepress that says-'what if the hokey-pokey really IS what its all about?'- so i've been doing the hokey-pokey inside my head for about 2 days...and then i'm reminded of this thing that bill bailey (a great comedian) did in one of his shows, where he did the hokey-pokey in german, with this dance group...oooh so funny.

its pretty funny that the same crazy, 'you have to be 5yrs old or drunk to enjoy it', nonsense dances exist all over the world...some kind of shared conciousness thing.
