could jayne fly serenity if the rest of the crew were knocked out, or dead? or would he crash her into a moon.

Now, by Jane I am assuming you mean Jayne? If so, I am sure if the ship is already powered up anyone could grab the controls and fly well enough in space. Pull back, up. Push in, down. Turn left, turn left. Turn right, turn right. (Or close enough anyway).

But for any technical flying; like landing or evasive procedures, you might as well let the missile hit you (it'll be faster).

We know Jayne can fly.

Actually we know Jayne can fly a vessel that has been hit and has lost some power. Come to think of it, we know he can fly this damaged craft while at the same time wrestling a large beastie of a man out of the crippled vessel.

I wouldn't place any bets on his interplanetary navigation abilities or on aerobatics (space-o-batics?). But I wouldn't doubt he could fly Serenity under normal situations.

Also, in Out Of Gas, Mal alludes to the fact that Jayne can fly when he tells Inara not to let him fly her shuttle. Frankly, I wouldn't be suprised if most of the crew (at least Mal, Zoe, Jayne, possibly even Book) Have some at least minor ability to fly (course corrections, landing at a proper spaceport etc).

You know, without wishing to sound nitpicky, I'd have thought Serenity would be able to fly herself - and provide some Wash-inspired wisecracks along the way. I'm sure artificial intelligence would have made some advances in 500 years.

Maybe it has, but the Firefly class of ship are down and dirty vehicles. If they break, you only need a mechanic to fix them, not somebody with a doctorate in computing.
As a mechanichal ship, it's relatively simple to maintain, and repair, if you add an AI to it, you just compound your problems.

You and Cruth raise an interesting thought I'd never had before--

There's no mention of a computer onboard Serenity.

The cortex, yes, which sounds and acts like the Internet, a communications tool; and waves; amd radar or other sensor technologies; but no computer, nothing to calculate courses with, no AI box to relate to. Interesting...

I'm sure Jayne could fly...but, Jayne WOULDN'T care about running into things, speed, comfort of anyone. Long as he stays out of Reaver territory or away from the Alliance, he's good. I'm sure he'd fly better if he was getting paid for it though.

I believe there is a basic flight computer, maybe not so futuristic AI but more along the lines of what almost all planes have now... or even closer to the cruise control we have on our cars.

Why? For the same reasons we have cruise control on our cars and autopilots for long flights... no one wants to sit in the chair holding the controls the whole time.

And what about when the crew were playing ring ball and Wash runs to the bridge. I got the impression they were on some sort of autopilot, not to mention for the distances travelled in space sitting dead in the water would most likely be wasted time. Also generally when using the phrase set a course for... you are using some type of computer, otherwise people would naturally say: let's go to..., or take us to..., etc.

Mal is asleep in his bunk

CRASH!

Mal sits bolt upright, hair askew

Mal: Huzza... wuzzis... wuh?

CRASH!

Mal: (mutters) Not again! (yells) JAYNE!!!

Outside Mal's bunk. Mal is trying to climb the ladder and get dressed at the same time

CRASH!

Mal: (yelling) JAYNE!!

Mal runs into the cockpit, just as he pulls a shirt over his head

Mal: Jayne! How many gorram times I gotta tell ya?? DON'T RUN INTO THE OTHER SHIPS!!

Jayne is grasping the controls, glaring out the front windscreen

Jayne: That 猴子的愚笨的儿子 overtook us! Nearly threw me off course!
Mal: I don't care if he flashed his behind out his airlock at us! YOU DON'T CRASH INTO THE OTHER SHIPS!
Jayne: He did it on purpose!
Mal: NO CRASHING INTO OTHER SHIPS!!! Or I will have Kaylee melt your guns down to patch up the holes!

Jayne turns to face Mal. He decides not to argue when he sees the expression on Mal's face.

Jayne: (mutters) If you just fixed some guns to this heap...
Mal: (walking offscreen) The repairs are comin' out of your pay!

Sulkily, Jayne switches on the autopilot and puts his feet up on the control desk

Mal walks back to his bunk

Mal: Knew I shoulda let the crazy girl pilot...

With regards to shipboard computers, at least on a ship like Serenity, I'd guess it would be something like the navicomputers in the star wars universe, i.e. it knows where you are, you input where you want to go, and it just does the math and tells you the details about headings and such.

There's a lot of post BDM fanfics out there where River is piloting, and does the calculations herself because she's either faster or more efficient/elegant than the computer (a bit like Piggy from Wraith squadron for those of you who also follow the Star wars books).
