The book that Joss read which began his idea for Firefly is the great Pulizer Prize winning novel of the Civil War, The Killer Angels. Here are just some of the similarites.

Slang for Union officers - Bluebellies

Slang for the night sky - The Black

A Major General in the Confederate army is a "dark, cold, icy man, alone....a man who works with an eye to the future, a slippery man, a careful soldier, he will build his reputation whatever the cost." His name is Jubal Early.

Anything sounding familiar? I'm not even through with this yet, but already I can see it puts the flat words of the history books and makes them alive with character. Pick it up sometime yourself.
