So it's 5:30 AM, and I think I just officially crossed the line for male shitheaded machoism...

I was driving a couple friends home, usual scenario, they're drunk and I'm the designated driver (Always am, since I never drink alcohol). One of em starts making references to Summer Glau and the character River, which he and everyone else knows is irking me in the first place. I cut him some slack, seeing as how he's drunk and all, but then he starts stepping it up. Finally, he makes some comment about wanting to "flow through River". I hit the break and swerve to the shoulder of the road, put it into park, and meet him on the passanger side with a right cross and a knee to the gut.

We went the rest of the way home in silence.

Now I ain't tryin to brag, since this guy was wasted and wasn't expecting me to get physical the second he stepped out of the car. But now I'm wondering how many other Browncoats have gotten in confrontations while trying to "Defend the honor" of a BDH, or maybe just the Verse in general. I know there's a lot of shit talkers and nay sayers out there; anyone here ever set on of them strait?

right on, man.
i've never had to actually get violent, as most of my friends know me well enough to know that if i get "that look" and start moving in their general direction, they'd best take back whatever joke they made before they get a foot to the head.

If this story is even remotely true, I think it's fair to say that you are a violent freak. Have a nice Tuesday.

I think you did right, it is hard to be into something so much when others don't care. You did well. I have the same type of problems cept they don't get crazy on me or drunk and definitly don't say anything mean about our BDH.

I've lost my temper, but not about the BDHs because with my friends, they've fallen for the series despite their resistence. So I just laugh at them for thinking that they can resist the wonder of Firefly and Serenity.

I'm with AgentRouka on this.

Maybe you buy the Jayne Cobb theory of leadership (chain of command), but I'm having a very hard time seeing how this kind of behavior is going to win more fans for FF/S.

Are you so thin-skinned that you can't take a little teasing about your (our) obsession? Can't you find a way to answer the jibes verbally rather than physically?

It seems like a vast overreaction. You most certainly didn't "do right" in my estimation.

Yes, we love and care about these fictional characters. But that's what they are: fictional. The only justification for violence is to stop or prevent violence against real people.

Gonna have to agree with AgentRouka and DonCoat on this one. You gotta chill man, it's only words. That sort of behaviour has no place in this land.

Dude, your talking about defending the honor of a fictional character, not your sister. I would be surprised if your buddy ever talked to you again.

I understand how we all love the show, but give me a break. Hitting someone becuase they said something about a character on a television program is ridiculous.

Oh, and I would like to flow through River, as she is pretty hot, and all kinds of bendy.

Again with another story of violence. Eesh. Defending the honor of a fictional character? That's just sad. I'm pretty sure Summer would be appalled.

My first reaction based on the story as told is: Danger! Violently unstable personality! It's only a movie.

In his defense, this assessment would certainly be true if the person who made the offensive comments were a stranger. These are people he knows, however, and what he was really reacting to was not the slight to "River" (that goes in quotes to remind everyone that there is no such person), but rather the teasing of himself and the slight on his interests. There might be all kinds of history that mitigates the circumstances.

I wasn't trying to tell this like I was proud of it. I've had some other issues in my life recently that have put me in a negative disposition. My friends know that, and sometimes they just like to see how many buttons they can push before they get me going. It's not like I don't do the same to them in return, we're guys, sometimes we interact in obnoxious and violent ways.

I guess in retrospect, it's not so much that they were making fun of a fictional character or an actress, but rather that they were purposfully trying to irritate me. It was their intention to make me angry that made me angry, not just the words that they were speaking. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else, but I've seen it be the agitating factor in more confrontations than not.

mink, you got it right when you wrote "but rather the teasing of himself and the slight on his interests.". When people try to down you and you back off, then they feel like they've got the green to do it more often.

This is really going off in a direction I wasn't intending it to. It seems like everytime I try and post a thread about something, it turns into a thread about people cross-examining me. The irony in this is that half of them claim that I'm just trying to get attention, which they could have avoided if they just hadn't said anything to begin with. In short; if you don't have anything to add to the topic, then don't add anything at all.

Even though it's mostly ruined now, I'm still interested to hear anyone else's stories of FireFlyFanaticism.

I once stormed out of my flat at 3:45am roaring drunk cos my flatmate said 'In the end, Buffy has no deeper meaning to it'. But I got about 20ft down the street and realised I had nowhere else to go so I went back.

Does that count?!

Nope, no stories. Well, maybe a little one. My wife thinks I'm obsessive (correctly) and gets irritated when I demonstrate excessive interest in something that to her is not so compelling, which gets me irritated in turn.

My family (Dad) just built a non-commercial co-op winery and we laid in a whole mess of grapes this year, so in about a year and a half we're going to be swimming in wine. I had this brilliant idea that I was going to make a special "Firefly" blend and create a Firefly label with the series logo and the ship's silhouette on it. She thought that was lame, I thought it was cool, we got mad, we argued, we got over it. Business as usual.

Sorry this thread backfired on you. But I guess I had the right idea. Those guys were being dicks to you at a sensitive time, that's what it's really about.

You've got to accept that other people have other opinions, frequently very wrong opinions. For example, my favourite show since I was a child is Doctor Who. And when I invited my father to watch the first episode of the new series with me, his response was "God, no. Doctor Who was crap and always will be crap."

Even those closest to you can have no taste but it would be a dull world if we all thought the same.

I don't agree with how you reacted to it but we are all sensitive about certain things and your friends probably knew that Firefly was the right button to push with you. I know it's all so easy to say "Don't be too sensitive or thin skinned" but sometimes you've just got to call the other guy an asshole and ignore him.

I'm a guy too, what's your point?

Basically, one day you're going to have to grow up and realize that we no longer live in caves.

And quit posting stories like this indicating that you are proud of the Neanderthal BS that you do and then contradict your first post saying that you aren't proud of it. I for one and getting tired of this neanderthal BS. After all, would you not be proud of what you did and post:

SerenityinScotland - Most deffinately! In fact, you get extra points because you're (pressumedly) Scottish.

Mink - Not as awesome, but still pretty much the kind of response I was looking for.

Sigmanuki - You got problems with what I say, stop reading my posts. It's as simple as that, cause I ain't about to cater to anyone just because they don't enjoy reading what I have to say.

Well, yeah, calm down, it's not that serious. A little obsession is nice, you can bond with people about it, but too much obsession leads us to punching our friends. And that's not good. Don't let you're friends get under your skin. Especially about this. The only kinda obsessive thing about me is that I practically mention Firefly in everything that I email to my friends. I only got into it like about a year ago, so my friends are getting used to it now. Plus I always use quotes about it as subject lines. Oh, and I followed Nathan Fillion home one time.

...

Is she kidding?
