Time for another new thread.
Previous thread is found at http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=24839

And to kick this one off, a question prompted by a number of the photos that have been posted recently.
What weapons do you own, and how many of them have you named?

**************

(Thx to Desktop Hippie for the banner)
If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. (Because ducks don't care about your politics, religion, skin colour, choice of music or even your haircut. They like everyone, provided you bring them food.)

Firsties!
I own several knives, but the only one named is Hadafang, my sword. the others have names like "My dagger" "My athame" "My lucky Swiss Army knife" "My switchblade" "My phoenix knife" You get the idea.

I don't have any weapons (yet), but I thought I would wander over and see what these Imponderables threads were all about.

Coincidentally, the random pic in the left corner is of Jayne ripping away the blanket from the pilot revealing his collection.

Good Morning, Everyone-

I don't own any weapons, but Husband has several - assorted hunting rifles, a black powder rifle, a .44 Super BlackHawk, some little .22 thingy, and a Tommy Gun he bought himself for his birthday last year. None have names; he's not one to name objects.

My weapon of choice is my tuna casserole served with brussel sprouts!

Time for more coffee...

Morning, all!

RIMG, glad to see you joined us! Hope you hang around for awhile. These threads are usually good for education and entertainment all rolled into one!

And it looks like I may never be able to start another thread with Nico around...

I have more weapons than I have the desire to list, so we'll leave that one alone.

I have a slight ponderance. It's raining here; dark, grey, wet...and all I feel like is going back to bed. Anyone else feel this way, and why do you think that is; the desire to do nothing but sleep when it rains?

Ok, off for coffee. I shall return.

Good morning all!

I don't have any weapons in my house. I don't hunt so I don't see the point of owning any firearms. Scratch that I due have a World War I Officers Sabre and a Bayonette. Used to be big on the weapons but with the little one running around I decided to get rid of most of what I had. Don't need any accidents from those, god knows she has enough without weapons.

Thanks for the welcome, I certainly did take my time in checking them out. Education and entertainment all in one? How can I contain my excitement ?!? It's like PBS, only without the singing puppets.

The weather is the same here today (remind me where you are when you remember to). I love sitting outside when it is raining, enjoying the smell and the sound and the coolness and the breeze. I also like going back to bed, but only if it is to snuggle with someone. I think one reason for sleeping or wanting to go back to sleep might be ingrained in us from previous times when rain meant you couldn't go anywhere without getting absolutely soaked, but I may be way off my nut here. Listening to it as you fall asleep is also one of the many ways I enjoy this sort of weather.

First of all, that title. When I saw it, I was overcome with a fit of overwhelming laughter. That just made my morning. And you know, I'd pay to see my countrymen riding yaks whilst kilted.

Weapons: When my father either dies or decides to dispense of them, I'll own two shotguns (one skeet, one pump-action), a deceptively small and enormously powerful hunting rifle, and a geared down pseudo-assault rifle what fires .22 bullets. Needless to say, if and when a Zombie Apocalypse(TM) occurs, I'll be ready.
I wish I'd get Dad's Browning lever-action, but that's going to my brother. It's a sweet little gun. *sigh*

EDIT: I just remembered. I'm also getting one of those rifle's the Canadians were saddled with in WWI. You remember the one which killed the people using them by throwing the bolt straight back into the poor bugger's eye? One of those. Expect me never to fire it. I like having both eyes.

Tristan: What you're describing is a medical condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder. It sucks. Lots of people suffer it, even the mentally balanced. For the unbalanced, it can lead to long stretches of depression, listlessness and lethargy, simply because we're deprived of light. It really calls to question whether we can truly be considered independant of plants. Without sunlight, we wither and wilt.
Needless to say, with the cold weather, pissin' down mist-rain, and ten-hour days I've got right now, I've got a hell of a SADness going on.

I'll be alright. I've got my Firefly. I'm feelin' a need to watch Jayne get hit by a wrench...

RIMG, how thoughtless of me (sorry, I am not yet at my 64% caffeine by blood volume yet...)

Welcome - It's always great to read someone else's thoughts on the loony things we talk about here.

Tristan- I get that way, too. It's very gloomy here, and your rain is projected to reach us later on tonight. I just want to curl up into a ball.
My mom had SAD, and if those light boxes had been invented before she died, I think she would have used it. I have it a little too, but not like she did.
But, RIMG is right on the money- there's nothing as soothing as listening to the rain as you fall asleep...

KelKhil, I can understand with a little one running around. I have a great deal of respect for you for being that responsible. I get tired of hearing horror stories about how little Jimmy got ahold of daddy's gun... No, it's too early to start a rant. Just know that I thank you!

RIMG, I live in the middle NE-ish of Alabama along I-20. I normally like the rain, too, just not when I have to go to work in it...
We do sometimes get a little beyond PBS programming here.

JTD...huh! Thank you for that description. Makes sense, sorta. While I am not a vampire, I try to avoid the sun as much as I can; but it's always nice to know it's there. Wow. Thanks again...now I have something to think about today!

Mavourneen, I am sorry the rain is headed your way. I can tell you to be ready for constant rain, dark skies, and cold. Ick.

I have a 5 year old, and Husband's rifles and guns are all in special cases with locks. Anyone who lives with guns and children should do the same.

I wish it wouldn't rain; Husband and I haven't raked leaves and they are piling up! Nothing worse than raking wet leaves...and we were planning on yardwork tomorrow.

Though I don't have any, I agree with the extreme care / locking of guns and other weapons around children. My two boys are destructive little monsters with just their bare hands (or other toys, or crayons, etc.)

Tristan, you are much closer to me than I thought (and consequently that explains the rain). I am 100 miles south of Atlanta in Warner Robins. Maybe we can work out some time to meet up before DragonCon (305ish days away).

Just got over a week long strech of rain here. Man it was gloomy. But yesterday the sun came out and it is out again today.

So PR how much snow did you get out in Colorado??? Sorry couldn't resist and my friend that lives in Denver is at work right now so I can't harass him.

So being that I don't follow the Con scene much...I have always wanted to go to GEN Con but thats about it. Is Dragon Con always in Atlanta? Are there packages if you buy tickets for rooms in the hotel it is running in? Where do you look up said info. I might have to try Dragon Con if I can save up the money. Which could be tough cause my friend that lives in Denver is getting married this spring and me and the fam have to go out there cuz I am the Best Man. Long ways from Michigan and the tickect prices are terrible. I would drive but something tells me that a 20+ hour drive with a 5 year old would not be fun.

Ugh, don't talk about that horrid stuff. I had to drive home through it yesterday morning and it was slushy and nasty and visibility was horrible. I think we got a few inches, and we got off light. Of course it started as rain; if it had been snow the whole time here we would have gotten 10-15 inches like those farther south did. Mountain schools all closed down, several other schools closed down, icky icky icky!
But today it was all melted. It was bone-chillingly cold and I had to scrape off my car before I could drive home, but there wasn't any slushy icy snow on the roads, for which I am thankful.

PR- sorry about that. That was our storm yesterday. It's a nasty slushy snow and chillingly cold, but warm is coming in behind it ( ok in an end of October sense of the word warm)

Tristan- Rain is my favorite weather. Not the massive downpour, but the dark overcast skys that make it look like night, cold snapping breeze, and rain...ooooooooooooooooh sorry all wishing for you weather now. It's my favorite weather to brew a pot of tea in my fav Chinese teapot and grab two or three new books and put on Loreena McKennitt and grab my quiltsac ( the lovesac people make quilts too and my sis in law is their accountant so we get lots of lovesac stuff cheap)and snuggle in for a best day ever. Even if I go to work on a rainy day, it just makes me happy:)

Weapons- Husband has variety of swords. Dad has many guns. None are named, but I bet my dad would let me name them( I'm the favorite child)

I miss Atlanta desperately every day. Living there for 6 years for school was absolute bliss, and now even the 100 miles to get there seems like light years, due to just not having the proper time to get up there. I went from the booming metropolis of 4.5 million+ to roughly 30,000-50,000, the majority of whom work for the base.

Tristan - Glad to hear it wasn't an attack, though I felt a small jab in my ribs

Thought I'd post that Husband's Armory is under lock and key...and no, I don't think there's anything wrong with that pet peeve at all. I really don't like weapons at all- only tolerate them in the house because Husband is careful with them.

Which brings me to ask those who are in a position to comment...Do you think children should be exposed to guns/gun safety at a young age to "demystify" them and educate them or should children be kept away from guns totally? Does it matter where you are? Rural ( and more likely to have hunting rifles, etc ) or Urban ( where guns are more likely for protection?)

EDIT: Took so long to write due to the real world I missed some people. Good Morning, MsG & PR !

Cold and nasty here in the UK too.

I cannot function in the mornings once it starts to get dark. It's as if someone has thrown a switch the last week, even though it's not got significantly darker or colder than before.

Weapons - do kitchen knives count? Or blowtorches? Or the little blade attachements you can get for food processors that look like shuriken? Otherwise, I own fencing blades, competition and practise.

Oh well, blessings for Samhain.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Mavs, my grandpa was a cop and has many, many guns. Seriously, sit in a chair in his house and you're within reach of one. I was drilled and redrilled on gun safety when I was twelve, would have been earlier if I spent great amounts of time with grandpa, but I don't tend to get out there much. My dad showed me where he kept his gun when I was 13, and I never touched it. If I came across a gun, ever, I would have total respect for it.
Here are the rules:
1) Know where the safety is. Keep it on unless you are firing.
2) Never point a gun at anyone. Never put a gun down pointing at anyone, or yourself. Never point a gun in anyone's general direction if you can help it at all.
3) Check and recheck to make sure a gun is empty before you put it down, unless you are intending to fire it again and/or put it in a holster. STILL do not point it at anyone or lay it down so that it points at anyone. Even an empty revolver with the chamber hanging out is not to be pointed at anyone!
4) Know where your clips are
Yes, I absolutely think that anyone who is going to have guns in their house should teach any child living there or who is there often 1) not to pick the ruttin' things up 2) that they aren't toys, don't pick the ruttin things up 3) they can kill people, don't pick the ruttin' things up, and 4) how to safely handle them in the proper setting, and make it clear that, barring anything drastic, that is the only time they are to pick the ruttin' things up.
See, I love guns, and sharp things, but I'm as gung-ho as the next person about safety. I just don't think 'safety' means 'no contact'.

We will not go quietly into the night
We will not give in without a Big Damn Fight
We are Browncoats, and we know we are right
We will rage, rage against the dying of our engine light!

*edit* Oh yes, my new sig. Thank you, RIMG, I came up with it in the wave of fury over what's going on with Universal's legal dept. It fits not only the feelings for the show, but the feelings for the merch.

PR- excellent gun safety rules!!! My dad's gun are all in a locked cabinet and the ammo is in a separate locked drawer. All guns also have a gun lock on them and have their firing pin removed unless my dad is using them. We were all conditioned never to touch them without him right there... prevents a lot of potential danger.

Tristan- No worries.

I'm asking because before Husband started the Armory, I was violently anti-gun. Didn't want anything to do with them, and truly kicked up my heels when I discovered the Super Blackhawk.

15 years and 1 Tidbit later, I'm much more comfortable with them, I can deal with them being locked up in the house...but Husband thinks Carson should start learning gun safety and how to be around guns. For frak's sake, he's only 5.

Granted, Husband grew up in Gopher's Crotch, Kansas where guns are commonplace and he claims "farm kids" learn about guns at an early age. This I (kind of) believe...but we live spitting distance from Washington, DC. Guns here are for drug disputes and gang violence.

Please, I respect your opinions. Am I wrong?

I think any kid under 8 is simply not capable of understanding the consequences of actions( this is verified by research), but after the age of 8 would be a good time for the basic NEVER touch this without daddy instruction. Based on learning theory and developmental stages about age 10-11 would be a time for more intro to guns stuff like PR was talking about.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Heh, that's kinda funny, Mavs, Kansas is where my dad grew up and where my grandpa still lives. I think my dad said he could fire a gun by the time he was eight or nine. Five might be a little young to handle guns in any way, but it's never too young to stress that they are not to be touched, especially unsupervised. And it should be easy to keep them out of his reach now, too.
And, to give you a bit of advice from my dad, don't let the boy fire a .45 until he's mostly grown, or the kick could have him clocking himself in the forehead.

Morning all...I'm going to go catch up with the thread in a bit, but I wanted to say thanks for the support.

Hehee...my thought exactly. Here was my response to him:

"Let's see:

1) A lot is two words
2) Expiration is spelled with an "i", not an "e"
3) Experation [sic] date? At least I don't look 10 years older than my age.
4) Are you saying that I should finish college or you should? It must be you because you clearly need to learn how to spell and parse sentences properly. Also, your reading comprehension seems to be lacking. I did say I wasn't a secretary, correct?
5) I already have a degree as well as some minors and post-graduate work.
6) I'm not a snob who seems to think secretaries belong in the "less than" category. I judge people by their character, not by their job or how much money they make. You're not make a good showing, that's for sure.
7) The word "overcompensating" comes to mind when reading your profile. I wonder why?"
8) But above all, I know that "a lot" is two words.

My co-workers wanted me to add something about his hairline, but that was a little to low for me. Anyway, he e-mailed again but it was completely boring. So I told him that even his insults were boring and then blocked him. Meh.

Off to actually read what y'all have been chatting about....

Where'd all this chatter come from? I only stepped away for a moment to the pub and the imponderables and the thread of one who shall remain nameless in PR address book, and now it's going to take me the rest of the afternoon to catch up here!

I was about 5 the first time I handled a gun. I used to hunt with my Dad. He pushed rules that were very similar to what PR added earlier.
I have alot of respect for them. I just do not do anything that requires owning one (Unless you count my Tippman 68 carbine Paintball gun that is).

OK time for the funny (and scary) Dad story......

About a year and a half ago I was out at my parents house trimming the branches of a tree behind their bedroom when I noticed a hole clean through their bedroom wall. They lived alone and way out in the country. Anyway, I asked my Dad what the hole was and he acted all sheepish and said he didn't know, must have been there when they bought the house.
So I asked my Mom. She said that my Dad had just gotten back from hunting and was cleaning his gun and it went off. (It was a .22 with "Bird Shot") Yup my Dad mister safety fired off a shot in the house. No one was home but him at the time and it was an outside wall but man was that scary. So the next day I was over again and I told him that if he wanted I could get the Sherrif's Hunting Safety Instructor (a friend of mine) to come over and teach him proper rifle safety. It really damaged his ego
Now you have to understand my Dad a bit. He has a real powerful respect for firearms and is a real strict man when it comes to the rules. Normally he won't even pack up after a hunting trip without cleaning his gun there and pulling the firing pin before it goes back into it's case and is put in the trunk. He didn't follow his own rules just this one time and look at how much fun I get to have at his expense for years to come.
Even the safest people make mistakes. That is one of the reasons I have no weapons in the house.

yeah I can see how that'd be embarrassing. I would agree even the most responsible of us have done something dippy while in a hurry or some such. Glad it didn't have more serious consequences.

EDIT- and Jonny I figure with all those cute doggies, I doubt you'd need guns...I did feel the need to pass this doggy costume website on to you

So NICO I gotta ask...

Title is from Ren and Stimpy right?

Man I miss that show. The new ones they put out a year back were just terrible. I want the classics!

The gun thing is quite alien for me. No tradition of it in the UK. Guns are the province of the armed forces and criminals, barring those few who hunt. (And considering that the largest carnivore in the UK is a badger, it ain't exactly big game.)

I agree with everyone..I have NO problem teaching the boy basic gun safety just like has been outlined above...that's just common sense. I just think 5 is too young. Husband thinks that next spring, when he will be 6 is a good time to start. Bleh.

(PR- Usually, I say Gopher's Crotch, Arkansas, but he's from Kansas...(El Dorado, which is South of Wichita)

And Jonny, you are being a saucy fellow today. Is Mrs. Quest away, perchance???

I like those guidlines, PR. Especially knowing where the clips are!

Mavourneen, I understand your stance. I am a collector and user of firearms of all sorts...or I have been on and off for all my life. The first time I fired a gun, I was 5 years old. It was a very big deal for me, and I treated the moment with respect and awe. (To give you an idea, the first thing I ever fired was a .45 Ruger Blackhawk that my stepfather gave to me several years back. Oh, and PR...I did not hit myself in the head with it ) I respect guns, and safety was drilled into my head at an early age. I have had one minor accident in 30 years of gun handling...a new acquisition that I was not used to put a hole in my roof. Don't ask.

So, I am a firm believer in teaching children about guns. I agree with MSG about the lack of understanding of consequences under age 8, but I still think they should be taught at an early age. Knowledge is power, and knowing what guns are for and what they can do is important.

RugBug, that was classic! I am glad you had fun with him.

JQ, this is how this thread goes...silence for a spell, then 35 posts per hour. When we get to talkin', we really get to talkin'!

KelKhil...see my above post involving a gun inside a house...I sympathize with him. I am the same way about safety, and the same thing happened to me.
