hi
first time posting on this webpage. but i do love all things firefly and its flim. first fell in love with it when it came out on dvd then rewatched them again when they were shown on the Uk sci fi channel.
and cant remeber how many times i have watched the flim when it first came out. Also done my best to make sure that every birthday xmass gift etc has either been firefly season 1 or serenty dvd lol... so have made many fall in love with it .

but with the not so great box office numbers(which is a crime i tell ya )is there still any hope for the world of firefly or are we just hanging on( ) to a dream that will never come.

when i first heard that they were making a flim on firefly i just couldnt belive it. i was realy hoping this was it this was the start of the rebirth of firefly. it was great the buzz etc....
but the money men have done their counting and i think i read some were even the great and almighty joss has said that there was no planned sequels..

i know the world of firefly will contune in other things such as books and comics but realy is there any hope in hell of there ever been more firefly be it on tv or cinema.

man dam fox network they realy dont know a great show when they see one.

man what browncoats would want to do to the man that took firefly off the air

If Steven Segal can keep making the same movie's that go straight to DVD then why can't firefly, which has a huge following, keep making films?

GORRAMREEVERS

This weekend I was channel surfing, and on SciFi they aired "Carnosaur" followed by "Carnosaur 2".

I thought, they greenlight crap like Carn 1 and have the audacity to greenlight Carn 2.....and meanwhile we can't get ANY GORRAM FIREFLY???

There is simply no justice in the world. But, we can't give up hope. I think Joss will work some magic someday, somehow, in the meantime we have to continue to HOLD. That's why we have sites like this, to help each other out.

Joss actually said he was not secretly writing Serenity II. He won't keep it a secret. He said something like no sequel *NOW*...can't say NEVER.

Hollywood...can't say NEVER on anything.

The money men and women haven't stopped counting.

We got DVDs selling.
We got Serenity still playing in theaters--Box Office screenings and Charity screenings see http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/ .
We got Official Universal Serenity merchandise selling. Ya want the list?
We got Nathan (Our Captain) Fillion on LOST, SLiTHER on DVD, new movie White Noise: The Light theater release January 5, 2007 UK USA.
We got Joss Whedon making a Wonder Woman movie.

The main actors are still under contract for another year for a sequel and after that it will only mean re-negotiating. They all want to do a Serenity sequel.

We got Big Darn Heroes popping up all over TV. More people see um...more people check out their work...which leads them to Firefly/Serenity.

And then don't forget...some of us play the lottery.

that last part reminds me of a quote:

"When your shot is exhausted, knock down the enemy with the stock of your rifle. If the rifle stock be broken, bite with your teeth."

It's like no matter how bad things look, Browncoats are still teetering on things like, "Hey, we could win the lottery!"

It's beautiful.

Well you certainly have a point about the Steven Segal movies. I hadn't thought about that. Wonder if he has a secret backer who likes to watch him kick ass and doesn't care about the bucks.

Just got off the phone with friends in Northern Cal (I'm in Midwest). Did my Firefly speel and am sending them the DVD series. Never ever say never.

IrishBrowncoat, I think you have the idea from the postings above that there is hope, Sharing the DVD box set and movie with friends is the best way to spread the word.

We're glad that you found your way to FFF.net. Welcome to the site. If you need anything or encouraging hopeful words, just get on the Cortex and send us a wave. There is always someone around.

EvilBungle, if you do win the lottery and your wife insists on sharing with a charitable foundation, you might consider FollowMal's new Good Work charitable group. http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=25233

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the site IrishBrowncoat! Glad to have you here posting w/ us.

There is hope. There is ALWAYS hope until Joss posts here otherwise. Even then most of us will hold out hope. It's what we do.

Your spreading the word by making gifts of the dvds is the best way to help the effort right now. We need to keep growing the fanbase by making more new people aware of the series and the movie. The more Serenity dvds that sell, the more money goes into the coffers of Universal. Needless to say the more profitable the film the more likely our odds of a sequel. So keep pushing my friend. We hold the line.

Take care & keep flyin'!

From the relationship between Joss and FOX, and FOX owning the license to the series, a TV series is pretty much out of the question.

But, a few more movies seems plausible.

Can answer this. Sci-Fi typically shoot their direct-to-TV movies in foreign countries like Romania, for a budget of around $100,000 or so. Example: last years movie "Mammoth" with Summer Glau was shot in Romania for peanuts.

To construct the Serenity set you're looking at about 50 times that amount, and then you have the actors salaries, crew, writing, producing, computer graphics etc on top of that. You need about $6m or so initial investment, and $2m an episode budget, for something like Firefly. Which is, pretty obviously, about 100 times the amount "Carnosaur 2" would cost.

its always nice to hear the optimist among us lol but i guess he is right
its the money men who control it all realy. the the will alone isnt enough.
and i wouldnt want them to do firelfy on a tiny budget as i would belive that would effect the quality of the show or movie.

If they made "Son of the Mask," "XXX," and "Star Trek: Nemisis" they'll make a sequal. We just need to keep it alive and growing.

My response here comes in two parts: bad news, and good news.

"The Mask", "XXX" and "Star Trek" have all been massive financial successes (Trek in varying amounts), though.

I'm not trying to troll here. Some of y'all may know I was involved in Serenity a bit. What I will say is that it's important to understand why the study isn't rushing out a sequel - not enough people went to see the first one. It's that simple.

Examples:

The Mask
Budget: $23m
Box office: $351,392,727 (DVDs on top of that, approx $1bn)

Of course it got a sequel.

What hope does Sereifly have? Direct to DVD movies. From the news wire today:

"'Babylon 5: The Lost Tales' is a direct-to-DVD project based on the popular series from the mid-1990s. Lost Tales first DVD, titled 'Voices of the Dark' has now begun production. As usual, J. Michael Straczynski and Doug Netter will be running the show with Straczynski directing. The characters, President John Sheridan (Boxleitner), Captain Elizabeth Lochley (Scoggins) and the technomage Galen (Woodward) are returning. The Lost Tales is an anthology series of sorts with two movies (previously three) per DVD starting in 2007. "

I don't have any hope, but it's nice that others do.

And I'm not looking for encouragement/sympathy/etc or anything - I'm completely fine with Serenity being the end.

B5 is a good example of what i guess we can hope for either a tv moive or some sort of series movies that are stright to dvd releases.

but i am guess b5 had a great run on the air and has a bigger fanbase.
what we have to do is keep buying firefly stuff etc be it dvds, tshrits, games, toys etc but to show the money men that there is a fan base out there.
and with a stright to dvd release i am guessing it is cheaper to do then a movie release.
and since dvds cost more for us to buy would i be right in saying that means more money for the money men?
and we seen that probley the dvd market is the best way for firefly fans?
with the great selling of both the series and flim on dvd been the main money earner.

Bingo. Firefly was a flop for FOX - it averaged 2.6 million viewers, which is crap for FOX, but cost multi millions to make. It was a bit of a flop in movie theatres, too.

However, Firefly on DVD has likely sold into the millions, with almost no promotion from the studio (seriously, has anybody ever seen a Firefly DVD set advert)?

I actually know Joss Whedon has been working on putting together a DVD project, although it's not neccessarily Firefly related. But I wouldn't put it on outside the range of possibility of happening.

The only thing is the Firefly fanbase is, to be honest, fairly small. Not to say we're not mighty, because we are - but nobody on the street knows what a Browncoat is, but they can probably tell you what a Trekkie is, for example. So I've no idea if the finances add up, but you never know.

Example: we know for certain that Firefly sold 250,000 copies, as this was disclosed online in 2004. 200,000 times by £15 per DVD would bring in a budget of £3.7m (about $7m). That'd be almost enough to do something. "SERENITY" (the 90 minute episode) cost around $9m in 2002.

In my opinion, the fan base should take real focus at 20th Century Home Entertainment and Universal Home Entertainment. They have the budgets, and both are developing other DVD premiere projects.

you are very right the only reason there was ever a flim was due to the fan base.
the ddvd sells showed the flim makers that there was fans out there.
even though i say most fans went to see the flim and loved it.
there was alot more peeps out there who would have loved it but didnt due to lack of big known stars and kinda the way it was promoted peeps were not 100% sure what the flim was about.

but the fan base alone is the strength behind the dvd sales. so best thing i say is to get the money men to maybe think of stright to dvd stuff.
heck i for one would buy it.

And even Direct to DVD doesn't mean we won't be able to see Serenity II, III, IV (whoops forgot my roman numerals) etc. on the Big Darn Screen.

We know how to do that.

And Universal even verified last year that we can show DVD to Big Darn Screen through Universal not that other company that doesn't allow you to advertise.

And there can also be select city releases. Also there are several theater owners around the US and UK who know Browncoats will show up.

Show it in the theater and sell the DVD right at the theater.

For more info on Serenity Charity Screenings see http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/

5 organizers signed up for Serenity Charity Screenings around June 23, 2007

Quote:

The 'Can't Stop The Serenity' screenings for Equality Now were an unqualified success. Organizers held events in 47 cities around the world, raising over $65,000 for the women's rights advocacy group.

And remember, there are still foreign countries that Serenity has not been released in. According to imdb.com SLiTHER (Nathan Fillion as Sheriff Bill Pardy) is being released in Japan – 23 December 2006. I thought SLiTHER's release dates had stopped awhile ago. Serenity was never was released to theaters in Japan.

I'M PUTTING THIS IN CAPITAL LETTERS SO THAT EVERYONE DOES GET A CHANCE TO SEE THIS.

THE ONLY/BEST CHANCE THAT WE HAVE TO ACTUALLY GET FIREFLY BACK ON T.V. IS FOR THE SCI-FI NETWORK TO PICK IT UP.

FOX OWNING THE RIGHTS MEANS VERY LITTLE. THEY DON'T BELIEVE IN THE SERIES AND HAVE NO NEED TO HOLD ON TO RIGHTS THAT THEY WILL NEVER USE TO TURN A PROFIT WITH ANYWAYS.

PUSHING SCI-FI TO PICK UP THE SERIES IS 100% THE BEST WAY TO GET FIREFLY BACK ON THE AIR...THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT'S EASIER SAID THEN DONE.

ok, i dunno if this thread is still on topic, because i didn't really read through it, but i'll assume so.

here's what i have to say on the subject:
the very nature of hope answers that question in hte affirmative. i've no doubt that what you ment by 'hope' was something along the lines of 'is there still a resonable chance?' but frankly i like hope better-
-and my opinion on HOPE for firefly is that as long as atleast one of the original 11 cast members is alive (the original 11 being the 9 actors, joss, and summer's feet), i intend to hope. feel free to join me.

Smitty , there's always more than one way for something to get done .

Sci-Fi is a very small network with big parents . If you only have new Firefly content on the Sci-Fi network , then you are automatically limiting the demographic . Firefly is premium content that breaks the Sci-Fi mold and appeals to much more than just the uber-geek fanboy following . Firefly appeals to an incredible range of fans , from say , about 7-years-old up to about 77 . Plus the show attracts viewers that would not typically choose a science-fiction program . A lot of females choose to watch Firefly , but a more typical science-fiction demographic skews more heavily male .

We've got lots of options .

Fox owning the rights actually means a lot . If someone decides to make new Firefly content for television , Fox can be persuaded to cash in that chip . Perhaps with a profit-sharing arrangement whereby they don't charge the full market price for the series rights up front , but take some percentage points of the subsequent DVD sales of the series once it is re-established .

This is Hollywood we're talking about . Deals will get made , so long as there is cashy money to be had .

Since Firefly is premium content , it would be best located on a premium network with a paying subscriber base . HBO or Showtime could get it done . HBO spent around 75 million dollars to produce " From The Earth To The Moon " . Tom Hanks was behind it , because after
" Apollo 13 " , he still felt that there were lots of untold stories remaining from the Apollo missions to the moon .

Seventy-five megabucks would be more than sufficient to produce a Firefly mini-series of about 14 hours in length . Likely it could be done for substantially less , maybe even only 50 million . Only about twice the cost of the Serenity movie , but enough new Firefly for a new " episode " of the mini-series to be shown every night for a week during its premiere time .
Then , those episodes could be parsed out to be re-shown , as a weekly series of episodes to be run for 7 weeks .

Then , prior to the next season's Firefly premiere , the " mini-series " format would be run again in a marathon session , to allow folk to catch up , if they'd missed any episodes .

The advantages :

1) We get lots of fresh , new Firefly content with production values probably on par with a feature film , but we get " a seasons worth " of shows , enough to make a second Firefly boxset .

2) The network gets to sign on lots of new Browncoat subscribers .

3) Firefly develops a larger following across a broad demographic , from people who already subscribe to the premium network .

4) Firefly finally gets some well-deserved notice and wins some Emmy awards .

5) The B.D. Heroes get to film the mini-series within a timeframe of maybe 90-100 days , which still allows them plenty of time to devote to other projects .

6) The Firefly series continues year after year and gains in popularity , becoming known to a huge number of households in the United States alone .

7) The network re-sells the show to its partners in overseas markets .

8) So many new Browncoats are being made that eventual demand requires new FF/Serenity feature films be made once every 2-3 years .

There are lots of other advantages , like increased merchandising , for example , that are not even considered at the moment .

If anyone thinks of other advantages to a plan like this , feel free to add your own thoughts .

Keep the Faith . Share the Love . Feel the Joy !

And remember White Noise: The Light (starring Nathan (Our Captain) Fillion) was supposed to be a Direct to DVD release and it is having a Theater release

White Noise: The Light
UK – 5 January 2007
USA – 5 January 2007
Netherlands – 3 May 2007

So The Powers that Be could plan a Direct to DVD and then decide to have a theater release.

Out2TheBlack,

You made some really good points. The Sci-Fi channel attracts a mostly male, highly geeky audience (I suppose I more or less fit that definition). Firefly attracts that crowd (some of them anyway) plus it attracts female viewers because of its character-driven nature.

But it doesn't attract everybody. Some people don't have the patience for a show like Firefly and some sci-fi geeks probably think it strays from sci-fi orthodoxy a little too much (i.e. no aliens, etc).

Ultimately, what Firefly is is premium content on par with the Sopranos or any other HBO exclusive series. It attracts a certain kind of person and that person will go way out of his way to get that content.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing a Firefly show on the Sci-Fi channel...they have bucked their fanbase before by bringing on crossover shows (i.e. the new BSG) and mainstream audiences will tune in (or at least program their DVR to tune in) to the Sci-Fi channel for the crossover shows.

What I think would be best is to finish the Malcolm Reynolds story on the silver screen (that will also help bring in other fans) and to have another show set in the 'Verse (starting off with a Sci-Fi miniseries as a test balloon).

The main asset about this franchise (and there are many) is, IMO, the setting and the premise themselves. This is the FIRST PLAUSIBLE EXTRASOLAR SCI-FI setting and it could easily spawn any number of spin-offs.
