Funny, Tristan - I thought of "Haunted While the Minutes Drag" by Love and Rockets.

Now I've got the Pogues in my head for the ride home! Tristan!

Also, congrats Miss Firstie DTH!

Ok I have a ponderable. What do you do when you are nervous to calm yourself down and how do you cheer yourself up when you are sad?

Jonny- LOL ok that was so funny!!! I love the erstwhile southern accent you put into it. Mind you I'm the only one here with a southern accent, but it was still so funny I'm glad I was sitting down and it's my prep so no one was around to ask why I was laughing like a loon:)

Okay, I can answer this one! It's the ever magical combination of Firefly and ice cream....it never fails for me! The ice cream could also be replaced by chocolate if it's cold out...

Tristan, I in fact have several different versions of 'Haunted' by Evanescence, so it comes up on the playlist a lot. I know it well.

Whimsy, if I have lavender oil, it tends to calm me down. If I don't, I close my eyes and count to five while breathing in, then open my eyes and count to five while breathing out. If that doesn't work I might have to run in circles with my arms behind me, possibly squealing, yelling, or whining. Cheering myself up when I'm sad is a lot harder, though a few deep breaths and a yummy smoothie can make me feel a little better. And if it's an option, Firefly. If those don't work, I need a good night's sleep. If that doesn't work I need several good night's sleep. Sometimes chocolate is involved.

When I'm nervous, a hot shower or a bath. Calms me down nicely. I also meditate, but unfortunately I sort of have to be calm in order to do it, so it doesn't really help calm me if I'm nervous! I'm working on it though.

When I'm sad... actually a hot shower or a bath is good for that too. And then I snuggle into bed early and read my favourite book or watch my old Buffy DVDs. Usually an early, cheerful episode. Or 'Family' from season 5, as that one always makes me smile.

If it's waaaay to early to go to bed, I go for a walk. There's an open organic farm about five minutes from my house, so I go there whenever I can. Watching the cute little baby animals bouncing around always lifts my spirits!

OK happy day..one of my 9th graders found the missing piece stuffed under some file sorters on the shelves under my cabinet tops...much better

Ok when I'm nervous I take a deep breath, find my center, and then visualize the outcome I want. Or I work out

Sad- U2's elevation + workout+ very rich cake with tons of frosting.

Really sad- watch firefly in my pajamas while eating something really nice I made for myself

You are SUCH a good teacher and have this GREAT creative streak in you and are able to elicit from these kids good and appropriate judgments and behaviors. Ah, that's the one I thought of. But I do love me some Pogues.

MSG: sorry to hear about the chess set. Grrr. I'm really hoping you find the missing piece.
Edited because yeah! The piece has been found.

Calming myself down really depends on what I'm nervous/upset about. If it's competition nerves, or meeting jitters, I just breathe in deeply and go over my plan of execution. Or I distract myself. If I'm upset, I have to remove myself and then go vent to someone.

Sad? The horse usually does the trick. He'll press his head against me and will just sit there and let me hug his face. That's not a typical reaction from a horse, so it's very sweet and just makes me so content.

Yes I call him ( and others) punkin, sugar, sweety, darlin, etc...they have learned to live with it, though it does elicit some funny looks from parole officers and cops (especially when used for a 6 foot tall, muscular, overly tattooed, teenager) but the boys are fine with it.

Ok, now I'm confused. Are we doubling the pondering by having two threads going at once (one her and one in Talk Story)? Or did I simply post in the wrong one?

*Checks the time stamps* Yep, I posted in the old one. Guess I'd best copy it over to here, although that thread might get some more responses now that I've bumped it up the list.

Quote:

Note to self: 36 or so hours away from the boards makes for a lot of catch-up reading to do.

I had my end of year exam for French last night (1st year-level French at uni is equivalent to that learnt by high school students, cramming 5 years worth of teaching into one year). I know I could have done better as I made the mistake of going to see Children of Men in the cinema prior to the exam. It's a very impressive film and one I'd recommend to anyone to watch, but only if they didn't need to focus on anything for the next day or so, as it left me feeling battered, mainly due to it being a very possible depiction of how things in the world are going.

So now I'm here and trying to catch up on everything. So let's see if I can add my 2c worth to some of the recent discussions.

Books/Bookshelves As a fast reader and a uni student, my shelves are all overflowing with a mix of everything. Some older stuff like the 1st edition copies of The Exorcist and The Time Machine, a 1971 set of LOTR (complete with fold-out maps) and an early 1900's copy of The Three Musketeers. Complete sets of books include the Wheel of Time series (what there is of it so far) and everything ever written by Matthew Reilly. Graphic novels/comics include the full sets of Sin City, Preacher and Transmetropolitan.
Then there's all the textbooks from uni (politics, history, religion, engineering, media studies).

So what does my library say about me? Buggered if I know.

NVG I know I haven't weighed in on you yet, but I feel it's time to start lobbing bricks at you.

Cooking I do a lot of the cooking in this house, so I'm always up for new recipes. In amongst all the special features on the Sin City dvd is the 10 minute Cooking school, which has a nice looking breakfast taco recipe on it, which I'm planning on trying in the next week or two.

That's enough for now. I'm sure there's been more stuff added for me to reply to while I've been writing this.

**************

(Thx to Desktop Hippie for the banner)
If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. (Because ducks don't care about your politics, religion, skin colour, choice of music or even your haircut. They like everyone, provided you bring them food.)

Hi, All. I'd like to catch up a little from the last thread on quotes. I posted that I have painted quotes on my kitchen cupboards. Magda asked to see them. I had a problem getting onto Photobucket (yes, PhoenixRose, Bucket not shop - I love when you can read my mind.)

I painted the cupboards a beige - dusty rose, and then I painted the quotes with my favorite colors: purple, teal, magenta, blue, and green. So here are pics of my cupboards with quotes.

Not exactly the best way to wake up, but here's a

Grab a big cup of coffee. Things have to get better.

Stressed and worried - as several have mentioned before, I meditate and relax.

Sad - when I get in the sad for no reason mode (especially when I start to cry), I look in a mirror. I can't look myself in the eyes and cry. I think 2 minutes is my record. I know it sounds silly because it truly is. Looking at yourself crying is pretty
hi-larious.

Hello Whimsicalnbrainpan:

I have these computer games of air combat during World War II. Diving and spining and trying to get the advantage over your opponent takes all your concentration. You have to watch you air speed, and make sure no one is coming up behind you. All the time keeping an eye on that moving target that you're trying to shot down. Then you pull the trigger and a stream of heavy ordnance pours out. You may fail. I fail three out of four times. The game is not easy. Even landing after a successful mission can be rough. After all that you realize that what made you nervous or sad has left you. Now I am not saying, "get a air combat game." You can do this with many things. Art. Repairing something you have been meaning to fix. Maybe shopping for something you have wanted to buy for a while. So mine just happens to be competing with other pilots for control of the skies.

I enjoy shopping too. When I do shop, it is usually for DVD's of some movie I enjoyed seeing at the theater and want to see again. So I not only have the pleasure of shopping, but also watching the movie when I get home. You don't have to buy, you can rent. I just like to buy movies that I know I will watch several times. And chocolate. Eat some chocolate while watching the movie.

It is always best to have more than one idea. If I have shot planes for a couple of days it is good to change to something else. So shopping is another of my favorite things to do.

So have a hobby if you have the urge. I have had several different hobbies in my life. Some for a year and some I have been doing since man invented the wheel.

So all my rambling is saying, "get busy." Idle hands are the devils play things. And an idle mind will follow very quickly.

What ever you do, make it something you enjoy.

The chocolate thing that has been reccomened I've used forever and while it tastes good it does not always work. Reading is my number one way to lose myself but some days I just can't focus. Sometimes I just have to wait things out until they pass. Doesn't take long usually.

TRAVELER

Well Whimsicalnbrainpan:

Do what you can. Money is always the hardest hurdle. And I have a hard time reading as well. It is one of my passions. I read almost anything. Even joined a book club so I could discover new authors. Now that is a cheap hobby. We use the Milwaukee library system. We give them a list of books we would like to read once a year and the library pulls all there volumns for a particlular book once a month. We even get a longer amount of time to keep them than the usual patron. So once a month we read a different book. And as I said we read everything. Novels, mysteries, biographies, and anything else you can think of. Sometimes poems. Have not got them to read Shakespeare yet, but I think we will read one of his pieces soon. I'm hoping for "Much Ado About Nothing". So if you live in a large city they may have a similar program. Shame on them if they don't.

I know what you mean about chocolate. You have to space it out. If you us it to often, it loses its effect.

I am lucky about Xmas. My mother is to old to go shopping so we don't exchange gifts. Just cards and spend some time together. So it is a cheap holiday for me. Just gas money to drive down to Chicago to see mom.

Will have to come up with a Xmas greeting card for the fansite. Now I have something to do.

Well good night and as always take care;

When I need cheering up, I like watching

=. It is a u tubefirefly video called I'm your mate. I love the part of the video where Jayne is focussing his rifle-scope on Mal and then Jayne mischieviously chuckles. A mischievous sense of humour seems good for mates sometimes.

I am lucky I have quite a few unread books and I hope I get a couple more for Xmas.

Space out chocolate? Are you nuts!

My nieces and nephew are the easiest to get gifts for. They are at that wonderful age where they like cash. That just leaves four people on my list to buy for and they are much harder than the kids.

Making a card for the site sounds like a great idea! Maybe we can get others into the idea. I'd love to see what PR and DTH would come up with.

Thank you sweet one. Have a good night.

MCQ

Wow! I have so much catching up to do that it makes my head spin!!

Whim - Thanks for letting me know of the new thread, I was just about to post this on the previous one.

PhoenixRose and Magda - in regard to your attention seeking attempts with those flashy emoticons, you make my position as court jester all the more complicated. Don't know if I could ever compete with those. I'm not one to usually seek attention or gain unwanted attention but it is nice to know you're not being completely ignored.

What I do when I'm nervous - I usually find myself pacing and rocking back and forth when I'm nervous about something. I'm always told that taking deep breaths will help calm my nerves and that's usually all it takes. When I'm really sad and want to be cheered up, I try to listen to music or watch tv/movies that will lighten my mood or else I take a nap and sleep it off. Once in a great while I'll write about it in a journal or let a friend online know about it and talk it out. I just know it's not good to keep it bottled up.

"Dead to me"
Hmm - don't think I've really felt like that towards anyone. I usually try to give people a chance but if they rub me the wrong way or do something that annoys me then they've crossed the line and it's hard for me to give them other chances. I try not to hate people because "hate" is such a strong word, but there are those who I really don't like and will try to avoid them if at all possible. I'm sure I'm probably dead to a few people that I've tried to meet online. I don't know why I am or what I did that was so horrible but some I've tried to meet locally online have quickly shut me out and avoided my attempts to chat with them or communicate (again, I don't know why but I guess it's their loss).

Quotes
I have a lot of quotes that I like to use and I'm almost always quoting movies, even if incorrectly (*gives PhoenixRose a quick look*). Here's some I used to have on t-shirts and still like to use:

"Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most."

"I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person."

"Another brilyunt mind diztroyed by the publik edukashun sistum."

"I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it!"

Firefly Women
Kaylee is definitely my fave of the women. I'm kind of opposite from what a lot of others have been saying. After Kaylee I'd say it's tight between River and Inara and then Zoe. I'm not into the whole "tough warrior woman" image that Zoe brings and I like the sweeter, gentler type with Kaylee and Inara.

*wipes brow* Whew! Hope that bring me up to date! *passes out from exhaustion*

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Good evening Imponderers... hello Q!! I'm so sorry to have appeared to usurp your position as Cout Jester - but you know... you are the Court Jester of the Mythical Land that is Iowa... not of the Imponderables per se...

Anyway - I want to see anyone top DTHs display of 'public sex' for the seeking of attention... ah.... no, I rephrase that - I dont' want to see anyone top that...

Hello Traveler & my gorgeous Whims!! I too love to read - but I find it difficult too, especially when I am wrestling with something emotional... that's why I threw my 'make me cry' therapy in to the mix... sometimes it is difficult to cry over something that genuinely is making you sad, but having a formula that is supposed to make you cry and is acceptable to cry at can allow that release that you really need at times... Plus I get to watch one of my favourite films at the same time!! Good upbeat music works for me too - especially when I don't have the luxury of taking time to get over something - like when I'm on my way to teach a Creative Memories class - I put on some pumpin' inspirational music and get to my destination feeling like I can take on the world!

It's got me too!! What more could you possibly want?

EDIT: Umm, on second thought, maybe it's not so glamourous here (as if I don't already know this after living here for 30+ years), so maybe I'll go to Melbourne instead?

JPSTARGAZER

Stinks like sex in this thread...crazy kids.

I'm gonna have to agree with MSG that U2's "Elevation" is one of the best pick-me-up songs, especially for a U2 fan.

Here's an imponderable to answer or ignore:

Have you ever had a situation where a friend asked you a loaded question like "What do you think about..." and it was some sort of moral question clearly about them and you know your morality or beliefs are different from theirs? I mean if the person knows how you feel but is just fishing for your fake "friend-approval" or even wants you to be honest in order to argue about it, what are you supposed to do? I was able to avoid the question but I feel it won't go away...any suggestions? Oh, and it's a female friend, if that affects any responses.

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

*wanders into thread rubbing her eyes*
Yep, totally jacked sleeping patterns. And when I'm at work with other people I won't be able to get on here. Whatever will I do?
I think I missed the question about bookshelves. I've got a small one in my room that has all my 'repeat reads' on it; Harry Potter, Black Jewels Trilogy, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and my really beautiful 'big red book' copy of LOTR. Second shelf has all my journals on it, and third shelf has what I guess could be called reference books. Firefly companions, Dictionary of Symbolism, torot card book, that kind of thing. In the TV room is a larger bookcase that has most of my other favorites; The Abhorson Trilogy, Sword of Truth Series, Oz books, my mom's books, etc etc. I seem to be pretty big into the fantasy, wouldn't you say? And I'm very picky on my fantasy, too. Some of it gets on my nerves and some of it is just okay, and then the stuff I love I buy and read over and over and over again.

*edit* Hello jie jie! Hello Q!
JP, if someone asks me a loaded 'morality' question, I answer honestly. If they want to argue about it then they want to argue about it. Usually it ends up being more of a discussion, where we kind of trade reasoning until we understand the other person's point of view. Usually we're not nearly as far away as we thought. Sometimes we are. Sometimes two people can't remain really close friends able to have those kinds of discussions because they tend to erode, and that's okay too.
