Just letting everyone know that today is the last day to get D*C memberships for $45.

After today, they go up to $50 and then on up from there. As far as I know, no guests are yet confirmed, but Summer Glau and Alan Tudyk both attended D*C 2006. I fully expect a few 'verse names on their list for next year. (Hopefully!)

Tristan, I am not sure if the private message went through, but I am interested in a Browncoat from you. If you can e-mail me \/ and let me know what measurements you need from me (use small words and explain the more obscure ones, I have only fully measured once, for a zoot suit, and it had little pictures of everything I had to measure ) that would be super.

Yes, this'll be my first D*C.

I've been a sci-fi/fantasy fan for a very long time. I've seen lots and lots over the many years, and a chance to see it all in one place is VERY appealing to me. I'm very much looking forward to it.

I just hope hubby realizes exactly HOW many days I'll be gone... Drive down from PA on Thursday, drive home Monday after everything's over. He'll be stuck with the kids for almost 6 whole days! I'm tempted to take my 6 year old, but I can't see him sitting still and standing in line that entire day.

Yeah, the Firefly Q&A's have loooonnnggg lines! Folk start lining up several hours before they're scheduled to start.

And don't even get me started on the Walk of Fame. LOL...all the other celebs must get somewhat pissed, as their lines are miniscule compared to those for our BDHs. PLUS, our Heroes don't ask for money to have your pic taken with them. Yes, you have to pay for their stock photos for them to sign, but if you want to just take a picture with them, no problem! I couldn't believe that other celebs (be it their choice, or their agents') were charging upwards of $50 for a "professionally taken" photo with them. What bullshit.

Just another reason to love & worship our BDHs!

YAY a Dragon*Con thread!

It's about time. It's been over TWO months since D*C06!

Last year a bunch of us went as pirates one day. This year, we've decided to go as Greek gods. If anyone wants to join us, there's a costumey thread floating around here somewhere with lists of gods, costume ideas, links and more!

It'll be loads of fun, promise!

this year was my first, and we had a blast! can't wait for next year! dtr #2 got one of the stock pix of alan in the knight's tale, and he wrote "it's called a lawnce, hellooo!" funny story - with the chemo, i had to rest alot, and as i was doing so, people were coming up and asking me if i was in line. after i "no"'d the 3rd person, i noticed that the line had started to snake around the area. when the next person asked me, i asked who's line. "alan and summer". i said, "oh, yeah", and quickly got off my butt! lol! by that time, the wait was 1/2 hr.

I am probably going to go next year, because I'm too damn poor and my parents would rather see a 'famous' cast like Desperate Housewives or something, opposed to our fun, good-natured folk.

I hope Alan is there again. And Summer. I'm sure they would do the dinosaur scene again for me.

I hear it is very hard to see Gina, because she is the most famous...

Hmmm , I got lucky this past Sunday night and got to speak with Adam Baldwin on C. Thomas Howell's radio show out of L.A. !

Adam asked me specifically if I'd gotten to go to DragonCon this time . I didn't , nor did he , from what I understand , but he mentioned that he considers it a good time . Shows that it is on his mind . I 'm sure that he'll come again if his work schedule allows . Seems he enjoys mixing it up with fellow Browncoats .

He has a role on ABC's " Daybreak " , which premieres tonight .

Keep the Faith . Share the Love . Feel the Joy !

I have registered! Must have got in just before the price changed over.
Now I just need travel costs and such. Anyone know if there are lots of extra expenses at the con itself? I'm betting so...

When going to a con, keep these factors in mind:

Hotel. I know I just called yesterday and the Hyatt was priced at $156 per night. Multiply by four nights, and that thankfulness I've got roommates lined up kicked in. If you can go with friends from home to cut costs of the room, DO IT. Sometimes you can also find online friends to room with. There are also people at the con who might be looking for roommates at the last minute, but finding someone at the last minute is as risky as going to the con without anywhere to stay. Yes, people actually really do this.

Plan on enough money for eating out at every meal. Something I like to do is bring granola bars or fruit for breakfast in the room. Since you'll be eating out for every meal, it helps to save a little cash by bringing your own breakfast. That and it helps save a little time in the morning and lets you hit the con just that much earlier.

Pack a few bottles of water. Carry one bottle around with you along with a small snack. You might get stuck in line for autographs and miss a regular meal time.

Autographs at D*C cost money. My mom and sister went last year and almost everyone's cost $20. Check the list of guests before you go and add it up from there. The biggest guest can sometimes go as high as $45 (if I remember correctly). Some guests also charge for taking a photo with them. Consider the guest and how much you want to spend on your experience with them.

Swag. Try to keep purchases for things you can't get online or are cheaper than online. If the D*C website posts up their vendor list, check it vendor websites before you go and see what things they offer online to get an idea of the prices of things you may want to buy. Remember that you'll have to travel home with it too, so think about how much room you'll have on the plane/train/car to bring it home. Also, remember how tetchy the US is about sharp metal objects on planes, so purchasing a lovely sword at D*C and flying home with it might not be such a good idea. :) (Also, packing a shouler bag to help carry around swag during the con is a good idea.)

To cut down on impulse buying, shop around the first day and check prices. Sometimes a dealer in one area has the same item as someone else and at a cheaper price. Wait until the second day to buy anything. For shopaholics like me, this rule is hard to follow but it really does help that pain in the pocketbook in the long run. Remember, the dealers won't be going anywhere the entire weekend.

Anyone else with any con advice? :)

Those are all very good general answers about Cons! For Atlanta in particular, there is a mall within a block of all the host hotels, and so has some cheaper eats. It can get very crowded, especially around mealtimes. If you're planning on bringing in any alcohol, make sure that it's packed up in a box so it doesn't clink and sealed with tape. If the hotel folks see it, they'll charge you an additional fee (corkage, I believe it's called). When staying in a high-end hotel, like the host hotels, it's wise to factor in internet access, valet parking & tip money. The first two vary from hotel to hotel, but tip money is tip money. If you keep the employees happy, they'll be more inclined to help you with either a) any problems you might run into or b) the masses of stuff that you're trying to schlep around.

A few more generalities: For newcomers to D*C, don't try to do it all! You'll kill yourself. Water, water, water! If you need help, ask (especially from Browncoats, but we all know that already). Try to get some sleep. Bring extra batteries/cards for your cameras, as there are pic opportunities EVERYWHERE. For those really hurtin' for money, you can try to get snackage in the ConSuite. Be warned, however, that it's always busy and unless you get there at the exact moment they put food out, you probably won't get any. Soda & coffee are usually available 24/7, though. Make sure your badge is with you at all times. Do try to catch the parade.

I guess that's all I can think of at the moment. Hope it helps!

A bit of Con advice (and this is supposed to be funny, so please take it that way!)...do not decide to get a divorce on Saturday night...it will ruin the rest of the Con for you.

Seriously, I plan on spending all my time with the Browncoats this year. I did not have much chance to do so last year. A good idea is to get a list of cell numbers for everyone. This was done last year, I think...but it's WAY too early to start something like that. I also suggest that everyone march in the parade. It's a great way to see everyone during the daylight hours, and to catch up with people you don't really know. It's also fun to just be part of such a shiny group of individuals! Shiniest folk in the 'Verse, I'm tellin' ya!

Is it time yet?!?

Great to see folks already thinking about D*C 2007!

I've been the past two years and it's a great time. Hopefully we'll get a chance to do another LIVE edition on 'The Signal' next year.

Below is a link to an excellent recap of what it was like to be at D*C back in 2005...

http://www.dvdtalk.com/features/dragoncon2005/index.html

For those folks looking to share rides, hotel rooms or other D*C tips I HIGHLY recommend monitoring the Live Journal link below. This journal will have a ton of excellent information especially as we get closer to the con...

http://community.livejournal.com/dragoncon/

Look forward to seeing everyone there in 2007.

Huzzah for D*C 2007!

A few good things to remember about the Con:

-Although it's probably awesome to do so, you don't HAVE to stay in one of the big three hotels. There are several smaller hotels within 4 or so blocks that are much cheaper.

-GET TO BROWNCOAT EVENTS EARLY. I think if the last two panels from '06 taught us anything, it's that Browncoats are willing to get in line 6 or so hours early for an event. Also, you may be asked to take part in the Human Wall to prevent line-breakers.

-The Shindig (assuming there's gonna be one) is gonna be packed. No way around that.

-Try to get to the Walk of Fame either really early or at some off-time (if there is one), especially for any BDHs. It's no fun to get there and be turned away by event organizer people. And don't forget plenty of cashy-money for autographs!

-Don't spend all your time in one building. There are three whole hotels to explore, so do it when you're not in a panel (or in line for one).

-And most importantly - try to make friends! Talk to anyone who's in line with you; you never know what the guy next to you (probably in full Browncoat/Klingon/Spiderman/Jedi/Hogwarts/whatever get-up) is like until you ask!

Consider the guest and how much you want to spend on your experience with them. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> also there's guests, and then there's guests. the first tier get their transportation, room, and all included just for their name value. the lower tiers get less and less, where some are getting there on their own dime, just for the exposure. most of them bring something to sell - books, videos, cds, virginia hey had candles and gave yoga(?) instructions. the top 5 this year charged $25 to $45 for their auto/pic, and another $50 if you wanted to be in the pic with them. that was done separately, by a pro. most guests let you take pix with them for free, most charged $20 for their auto, pic included or whatever you wanted signed. the only exception i know about was the ghosthunters, who did not charge for signing, but they had mags and tees and hats for sale.
food- the little food concourse off the marroitt has your usual fast foods, chik fil a,pizza, chinese and the like. mickey dees is a few blocks away, as is a hard rock cafe. and someone mentioned the con suite? definitely a place to find free food. it will be cheap, but filling. stuff like tuna sandwiches, soup, munchies, etc. but it's real nice of them when you're on a limited budget and find you have underestimated your $$ layout. and one time we stopped by, a couple had gotten married and shared their wedding cake with us! :-) does anyone know if they take donations for that? i'd like to pay back for all the past cons i've been to, and partaken of their bounty! hotel - mention dragoncon and you will be charged for the room, not per person!

If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. Absolutely! Tickets, pictures, autographs, dates, whatever.
(I'm also hoping it'll pay for even a small fraction of bandages you'll need... muahaha! grrrr...! fffft! fffft! See the ferocity in my font?!? ooooooo, the savage fierceness!)

RiverIsMyGoddess, Tristan - what is all this "we" I'm seeing from you? Trying to weasel your way in to our brilliant money-making scheme.... There is no "we" here! No, no! There's just we three...no, four...wait, crap, there is a "we." I'll have to re-think this.

Tristan sayeth: "Hell's Kitten...are we actually going to get to meet you this time?"

To which Hell's Kitten rethpondeth: "I recall being there the entire weekend, unlike sssssommmme people... And unlike others, I just do the sneaky ninja hidey thing so you didn't see me."

Just remember, I got dibs on the picture taking.
And may I say, if this really gets going the way it should, people are going to forget the D*C. In fact, if there was any doubt about me making it to Atlanta before, I've just forgotten what it might have been.

"Well, here I am...Does that seem right to you?"

I'm savin' my lunchmoney and crossing my fingers. If I can't go, well, I don't know what I'll do but it will be drastic.

-Don't spend all your time in one building. There are three whole hotels to explore, so do it when you're not in a panel (or in line for one).

Yeah, lines start way early for Browncoat events. I was at or near the front for the first two this past year and was part of the Human Wall for the third.

I ended up spending all my time in one building, more or less. I didn't even end up doing much...just seemed like I could never find the time. And there were three buildings? I only thought there were two, haha. Shows how much I missed.

$156 a night at the Hyatt? Did you mention that you were there for DC? They normally offer like a 4 or 5 buck discount f you stay at least 4 nights.

Oh, newbie Browncoat from Greenville SC here. Hi ya'll!

If I could only read your mind, tell me the answer I would find. Do you dream of me?

I only offer my services as another ticket salesperson, I want all of the money to go toward supporting you lady-fighters. Seeing the fight will be more'n enough for me. :)

In contacting the reservations manager, I was told that the D*C price wouldn't be worked out until January. The price for the Marriott is usually right around $150/night. I'm not sure about the other host hotels.
