First?

EDIT: YES!! Guess I jumped on at the right time. Just waiting to turn in some homework for my last class before break...the idleness is just killing me. Sorry, don't have an imponderable right now though but you know what they say about idle minds...

I hope CMH does not mind this, but I am copying this from the last thread:

Quote:

Tristan (et all) - Here's how it was:

Showed up Friday afternoon in the town of Charlottesville, VA for the Jefferson Thanksgiving Festival. My friend and I were the first re-enactors to arrive. You can go to http://www.jeffersonthanksgiving.org/ for info on the festival in it's entirety. If you click on "participants", I fought under the Maryland Loyalist Battalion.

It was effing cold down there, but we managed to get through two nights with nothing but 18th century equipment. I was actually told that while on campaign, soldiers back then would not get to sleep in tents normally like we were doing. That made me feel sad for them. Saturday was the only real "event" day. We marched around the downtown area, and I was surprised to see so many of the townsfolk dressed in period garb who had nothing to do with the re-enactment itself. Apparently people down there really get into the local heritage stuff.

We also did some drilling for the public, usual British line maneuvers, wheeling and the like. We didn't have enough people for box formations. Actually, this was the smallest re-enactor turnout they've ever had since they started, I was told. Made for a really crappy battle, but our side "won" and I was deaf for about 5 minutes after our artillery team fired off the cannon. I got really excited when I saw an elderly gentleman wearing a green beret with the 5th SFG flash. I introduced myself and told him that I used to be with the 7th, only to find that he had just bought the thing at a military surplus store. That irked me a little bit, but he was prior service, and old, so I let it slide. Oh yeah, I also threatened to violate a passer-by with my bayonet... disrespectful little punk was making fun of us.

Anyways, now that I look back, not a whole lot to tell event wise. Just good times with some new folk who seemed entertained but a little put off by my personality (What's new?). And great food.

I'll have pictures in one of the picture threads ASAP, but honestly, I'm having a hell of a time tracking them down.

JQ - I cannot believe that I thought about Jet Li before Connor McCleoud. I am eternally ashamed.

MSG - I did a Rev war re-enactment this past weekend. That dark age/fantasy thing is still this coming weekend at Lake Needwood in Rockville.

CMH, that does sound like fun. Especially the camping out part. I have done some of that for Ren Faires, but we had modern tents and canned food...

Artillery! Whoo-hoo! Big badda-boom!

Thank you for the link...I'll be over there for a little bit checking it out. Still looking forward to the photos; like NVG said, visuals!

Nah, I don't mind. Thanks, actually. Also, I love the song "Fields of Athenry". I actually used to sing it sometimes back in the Army. I get/got some shit for it, some people think it's gay to sing a song like that, but I mean hell, soldiers were singing these tunes on campaign for centuries without any concern for the "daintiness" of it. A pretty song can really lift your spirits when you're away from home, even if it is a little sad.

Place my body on a ship and burn it on the sea,
Let my spirit rise, Valkyries carry me.
Take me to Valhalla where my brothers wait for me.
Fires burn into the sky, my spirit will never die.

Not to worry, young laddy. Jet Li's a bit fresher on the mind. You were only a wee two year old when Highlander came out. I'm sure the ancestor's will forgi'e ye.

CMH, I understand. Well, as much as I can, I understand. One of my favorite songs of that vein is GarryOwen, probably because of the link to Custer.

JQ, you are not advocating quick abandonment, nor am I, but there are times when things simply cannot be worked out. That's why I like the shelf-life theory...get out before hatred and anger become part of the mix; that's sound advice!

Hi to all Imponderables,
I've been reading the threads, but I don't think I have a whole lot to add to the conversations.
Marriage - not for me
Change my name - probably not
Killing - I can't imagine a reason. I would die trying to save someone I loved, and I would do my best to injure the person that is attacking them. I just don't think I could ever kill. I'm hoping that I'm never faced with that decision.
The "One" - Against all math rules - I believe in a lot of "Ones."
Divorce - inevitable for some, but no need for divorce if you never marry
Shopping - I hate it.

CMH, sounds like you had a good time.

JQ and Tristan, I think I need to go back to the end of the last thread. I missed the part about the "shelf-life theory."

Hi guys, can I jump back into the imponderables again? We talking shopping? I've not been indulging in that particular addiction recently. Except for on-line shopping. That's dangerous. Click a few buttons and suddenly you're poorer! Ebay's the worst. I've gotten so hooked on online auctions that I have on occasion spent more on a second hand item than it costs new!
Anyone else an ebay addict?

I've returned.

Back to divulging my feelings...

GarryOwen has always been a sore spot on my heart. I respect and understand the military career of Custer, but also understand the truth behind the Indian War campaigns. Politicians. But Custer himself was aspiring for the Presidency of the United States, was he not. From what I've read he condoned the murder of non-combatants and killed in the name of personal gain. Aren't these the actions of an evil man?

God bless the 7th CAV, but Custer can kiss my ass.

But thats just how I feel.

Ooh...NVG, I am sorry about that. I have not canonized Custer by any means, and I think he got what he deserved. He is an intriguing historical enigma, and one of my areas of interest happen to be the Plains Wars. GarryOwen did not just belong to the 7th...it has been used many times...matter of fact, I think one of the groups that are currently in Iraq use the tune.
Back to Custer for a moment...I admire the man while disliking what he did. I hope that makes sense, and does not stoke anger in your heart, NVG.

evenin' Imponderables.

Not a whole lot to contribute, but I did have one thing to say about the shopping. I go to the store with certain things in mind to buy, and if I happen to pass by something else I might want/need, I will get it. I can't sit and look at 10 different outfits, I usually just find one in my size and get going.

NV- see now I find Custer's last stand ironic. The very prejudice that caused them to attack the Indians was what led them to completely underestimate them thereby leading to their own destruction...see irony:)You should really see Eddie Izzard's take on the "colonists' landing in North America...it's really funny and sardonic. You'd enjoy it...also I love Wednesday Addams in the second Addams family movie and her " adjustment" to the pilgrim story:)Luckily I'm Irish...we were far too busy drinking, fighting amongst ourselves, and procreating to enslave or destroy anyone. We mostly anihilate ourselves:)

By all means, I understand. Look at the mans military record leading up to a few years before the "Battle" of Little Bighorn. Spectacular. But greed does things to folks. I get to laughin' when people say the "Battle" of Wounded Knee was caused by the Native uprising against Custer. It was neither a "battle" nor was it caused by the killing of Custer. Many hostile actions were taken by both sides leading up to both events.

The best tool for showing the truths of Custer:
From WikiPedia- The massacre of an Indian village in Little Big Man was based on the massacre of Black Kettle's village on the Washita in November 1868.
Son of the Morning Star is a 1984 book, a 1991 television movie based on the book, and a 2007 feature film also based on the book. It chronicles the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the personalities involved and the events

Though they are films with very different perspectives, the truths seem to be easily weeded from the fiction.

Not to get in anyones face, especially yours LA, but kids need to be taught history. Is it any wonder so many kids today have no pride in who they are and where they come from.

I saw CMH touch on the issue some time back. My family can only be traced on paper as far back as my great-grandparents. And the info available is mainly census information that really has little significace. But the stories that moved down seem to be of more importance.

Oh damn. I'm starting to rant. I'll save it for another day.

I can trace my maternal side pretty far back & am glad to know about my ancestors.

I do stress that th kids learn history in school although I would like to strive to find more truth to give them than what school will teach.

Not so much American history. More personal history. What links you to the rest of the world?

As for my link to American Hisory.

Wavoka, the "prophet" of the Ghost Dance, came from Schurz/Yerington. He passed his visions on and it made its way to the Souix who were later involved in the "Battle" at Wounded Knee. Someway through the blood lines he is a great uncle.

The decoys I make are passed on through several thousand years of tradition. Few still make them. The idea and style are fairly unique not only for the US, but for the world.

Personal achievements: I work with kids. More indirect than almost anything you can do. I have more direct achievements, but the kids I work with seem to hold more rellevance.

I understand what you're saying NV .I do know my Jewish history pretty well from years of school, but not so much on the rest of the world. I never thought about it much but it could be why I don't feel so connected to the outside world much.
My family came to the US at the beginning of the 1900's so I don't feel very connected to America as much as NYC where we've always lived.
Thank you for giving me something to think on.And thank you for sharing your history , it's really interesting.

Now that's a more complex question. At the moment it feels like I have very few links to the rest of the world, but that's just because I'm getting over a rather nasty bout of depression.

But I you were talking more about family history. You sure have an interesting one. I don't know of many interesting stories from my family history. My great grandmother lost a huge fortune on the Lusitania when she was trying to emigrate to America. Since then we've all been stay at home types, as a rule.

heya Imponderables!

i hope everyone is doing well this week.

Magda and Nico- are you guys ok??- not all burned up? we're having a really wicked bad bush-fire situ going on.

ummm...ok, so as for shopping, i LOVE it! i could spend hours and hours just wandering around stores and looking at everything...uuuhhh.
but i also really love online shopping...which i'm trying to cut down on (cuase i relised i bought so many cool shirts and things from places like cafepress that i no longer have room in my wardrobe)

and on family history- well, i know absolutely nothing cause i'm adopted. i know my natural parents' names and that they both came out to Oz from England when they were 35-ish, they had me when they were in their 40's and gave me up for adoption at birth.
so, i can't really contribute anything there, BUT i do know a lot about world history- ancient and modern. i've been obsessed with it all my life and it is one of the main reasons i travel around the world as much as i can.

My family history? Alcohol and gambling, sad to say. Plus quaint little mental instabilities and a handy genetic resistance to painkillers (I swear, it's true. Caused a fear of dentists). I was amazed to find out that on my dad's side I'm descended from Australian drug-dealers, and more than a little curious.

My family is the kind that tries not to get talking about heritage. Except for me, obviously.

Seriously - I think that just dealing with it's like fighting your way to survive every day among millions of people who believe that they are the complete center of the universe , and we forget that everyone else doesn't do that.
Please don't get me wrong here.It is my home & history but I plan on moving to the mountains as soon as I can afford it.I'm very envious of the life you describe.I would love a chance to stay in touch with nature & my suroundings more .But I do live about 5 blocks from the ocean, so I get to enjoy the water often. But someday I'm going to the mountain cabin & never coming back !

Genealogy is my hobby. I can spend hours doing research online. I enjoy getting any new facts about my family, but to get the stories and pictures is very exciting to me. NV, is right it's learning about our family history and how it connects to world history.

When I first started, I knew very little about my father's family. It's now the branch of my family that I know the most. They came from Wiltshire, England, to a small little town - Minonk, Illinois. I did take a trip there, and there's a small church with my great great great grandparents' names on a stained glass window.

I also took a trip to England to do research at Wiltshire. My family came from a small village that is half way between Bath and Stonehenge. I can't trace my family that far, but I do believe that I have some Roman and Druid ancestors.

Killing another Human: Given the right (or wrong, depending on your viewpoint) situation, I'm almost certain I could. Of course, I'd take every precaution to prevent it, first. For example, if we've both got guns, and I get the first shot, it's not going into his head. Probably his leg, or if I'm feeling very lucky, his shoulder. Hard to aim with a busted shoulder. Killing wouldn't be my first choice, but it's not 'not a choice'.

The One: I believe there is a perfect match for everbody in the world, somebody who provides the other half of one's behaggered soul. But souls aren't like jigsaw pieces, which have a single conformation of fit; they're more like blobs of clay. Clay can be worked, and if done right, can fit with another lump of clay so fastly that when fired, are inseparable. Of course, I've only once worked in clay, and I'm sure better analogues have been used, but that's what I have which I can bring to the table.

Divorce: Better to have loved and lost, say I. Sometimes, when you fire the aforementioned clay, it doesn't stick. You wanted it to stick, but it just won't, and no amount of attempts or effort will make it work. Sometimes, you just have to let the parts come apart, and try again with a new lump of clay (wow, this analogue ain't that bad...).

Shopping: I don't shop, really. I purchase. I find what I was looking for, I buy it, then I leave. I don't marvel at the sales and whatnot, most of the time I don't even notice them. My priorities are so damned strict (considering how little money I have to work with), I can't afford to get distracted.
I wish I had money...

Well, I'm caught up... Now, I'm going to bed.

--------------
I ain't lookin' for help from on high. That's a damn long wait for a train don't come.

The One- I believe in it kind of, not totally sure yet. I think while there probably several "ones" for each person, just a matter of finding one of them.

Divorce- Just plain sucks. Especially from the childs point of view...

Killing people- The divorce thing is certainly making me consider it...

Also just about the name of the topic, where I'm from half the people would love it and half the people would want to take your life for naming the topic after that song. Its assosiated with Celtic football club here, often sang at games and its on their cds and so on.

Hell's Kitten, usually there is just one thing to ponder. Right now there were a couple of threads that went fairly fast, so we're just trying to catch up. Keep checking and it might make more sense, or maybe not.

13, interesting background. Now which way are you going to be heading on your life journey?

LA, going to the mountains sounds great. I'm sure it will be the pizzas that you would miss if you moved from the hellmouth of New York.

James, I like your clay analogy. I have done a lot of work with clay. If you want two separate pieces to stay connected, you need to score them before pressing them together. (Need to work on it if you want it to stay together). If you don't the 2 pieces will separate when they're fired.

NavySeils, is there a divorce pending? Sorry if there is. Emotional stress is horrific when you find out the "one" is not the "one."

mornin' Imponderables.

eBay - This one is my downfall. Not so much comparing things as in traditional shopping, but finding and clicking on things I want can get out of control. I agree with Emma, it doesn't seem like real money until much later.

history - I loved European history in high school, the teacher was great and the facts were very interesting. I don't remember enough of it, and that I do regret. I also don't know nearly enough about my own family history, something I would like to remedy.

LA, I am with you on the mountains, and pizza can be homemade to avoid having to go back into the hellmouth. :)

You're right RIMG ,I'll just have to install a pizza oven when I move. That way no more hellmouth.I can't wait till the day I get out of here .
No matter what it has to be before my oldest gets out of elementary school. The junior high we're zoned for already had a crack bust & stabbing. And I'm in a decent neighborhood !

MAGDALENA

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Hi everyone!! I just read through 2 threads and now I cannot remember what was happening in either...

Ah...JohnnyQuest I also thought of Christopher Lambert being 'The One'... as in "there can be only..." you know... I love and adore the first film and just haven't seen it often enough... I still remember the thrill of seeing it for the first time, but after seeing the sequal my best friend and I wrote a totally idfferent scenario and decided to keep that as our 'Highlander reality' so I never saw any of the others... sounds a little like 'The Excorsist' movies - the 2nd one just needs to be ignored entirely...

Hello Emma!!... I too come from a non-American background so I don't get it all either - having said that I had an obsession with American Civil War and the Plains War that followed, though it is years since I absorbed myself in it all... Love you Darling - I'm another who relates to the depression stuggle at times...

13!!... It's been way too long! Glad to see you around again and welcome home!! Love the avatar!

Oh dear... Hells Kitten if you can't hack it over here, how are you going to cope with a 3 way battle with me and PR??? Give up now Darlin'... I'll pm you my address so you can send the Kaylee outfit by air mail!!

Hello Q it's the Avatar and the short posting name - I used to get Ged and Tristan mixed up in my earlier days... and now I just look for the little coffee cup at the bottom of Tristan's post... That's pure Tristan, that is...

James!! I love your analogy too... very clever - you could write a book about it all!!

Hello VerseExplorer How are you Kaylee-clone? If good pizza cafe's are a sign that you're living on the hellmouth - I am in BIG trouble here in Melbourne!! Little Albatross we have mountains and pizza shops!! Migrate!!

Hello RIMG... Yay! The advance guard is here!! I don't really like shopping on line because when I spend money I like to hold the thing I am purchasing - though, as you all say MsG, Emma and you, it doesn't really feel like spending until... well in my case my debit card goes through immediately - so it's when I realise the exchange rate wasn't as good as I thought and I have to wait til pay day to purchase something else I really need...

Hey Tristan... nothing really - just wanted to kiss you qing ren

Oh - and Shiny Kitten I've been wondering how you're going with all those fires in the Blue Mountains...? Melbourne isn't directly threatened but I have had asthma because of all the smoke filling the house last night! Mind you - my voice sounds really deep and sexy today...

Edit: coz it took me so long to post all of that that the conversation just kept going... Hello LA & RIMG we're all here together!! Hey - we don't have those inds of raids in Melbourne either!!! (I don't know what 13 is talking about... Australian Drug Smugglers???) Migrate LA!!

mornin' magda!

Deep, sexy voice huh? Sounds exciting. :)

I use half.com a lot, buying slightly used books for very cheap (I have sent several people copies of my favorite book via this service). I also assembled my home PC via eBay, and got my FF series DVDs there too, as well as $100s of dollars of other stuff.

I haven't responded to your e-mail yet, but I might get a chance to today. I oughta give you my work address as I have more time to e-mail when I am here.

Little Albatross:kiss!! We're here, together and still on the same day!! It's amazing is what it is!! We used to get certain shoplifters in Myer who used their baby's nappy to hide stuff in - I mean, they thought we wouldn't dare ask to see in their nappies... but the Security staff at the department store would get it all on camera (we always knew who they were) and the police would get the un-enviable task of searching the nappies... euch! Maybe the next progression is for the babies to deal crack directly from their nappies!?!?

Oh - and I am well... aside from the astham cough - the air is clearer and it's a little cooler today so I am a happy little camper!

Ok RIMG you mentioned your favorite bok but leave out the title ?

Magda - Great big hugs ( as Sean would say ) those poor police ! But don't laugh, I'm sure that crack will be sold that way soon.
