Heres a possible imponderable. How did you all figure out what you wanted to do when you grew up and went out into the big bad world(to those that are grown up that is)?, cause I'm finding that picking a career is something that I really have difficulty doing. Theres a few things i think i might like, but without the definite dream job I seem to just lack any real motivation to go for anything.

I am a teacher, and a statistic I quote often to my colleagues is one that says that some inordinantly high percentage of current students will be in careers that have yet to invented...so you cant prepare. Most people these days change jobs several times - up to 7 or 8 and the trend is expected to continue.

So, dont think you have to decide to do something for the rest of your life...follow an interest, and if it doesnt pan out, try something else. You can do that, and still be responsible, earn a good wage etc.

I am a bit older than the generation that they are talking about in those statistics - but I have still changed careers multiple times. I trained to be an art teacher, but really wanted to be a photographer. worked as a photographer for 8 years and the company sucked. Trained to be a museum curator, but couldnt break in, so went back after a 10 year break and finally taught, and enjoyed that (shock horror). Now I am branching out into yet another area, still in education, and I love my job.... So, really, dont think you have to decide now....

I knew when I was about ten years old that I would become a football (Soccer) player, unfortunatly I found out at 18 that when a car hits your knee cap there is only one winner! most jobs out there are not jobs you would pick as a kid, but they have to be done, I am a performance analyst, it's not what I wanted to be but I do it to the best of my ability and I am a success in it. I guess the way I look at it is that it doesn't matter what you pick as long as you give it your all you will get oportunities to do well.

Good morning all

Funnily enough, I spent most of my teens saying that I would never, ever be a teacher. Obviously things have changed since But I guess I meant the traditional kid teaching whereas now I teach adults.

As for what I did want to do... I had no idea when I was a kid. And that terrified me. Especially when I finished school and started choosing subjects for college. My older brother always knew he was going to end up working with computers, but I didn't have anything like that. I was very mixed up and worried.

Hi SuzfromOz & EvilBungle! It is so good to see you both here - I don't think you've posted with the Imponderables before and I just wanted to say welcome to the family! It is really good to hear both your experiences and POV's!

Suz - where abouts in Oz are you from? I am in Melbourne, but there are a few of us around... it is always a thrill to meet other Aussie's here! It is really interesting to hear what you have to say about future jobs - it just goes to show what we've all learned as we go through life - you rarely work in the field you studied for...

EvilBungle - I am so sorry to hear about your accident too! Life sometimes takes us on journeys that we could never have anticipated - my most recent change in career came, as I think I mentioned, after a serious illness. I also take the line that if I am doing my job to the best of my ability then it is a job I can take satisfaction in - even when I was a chekcout chick at Coles in the 1980s, I had customers who would prefer to line up at my register than go through another checkout with a shorter queue - that is the pinnacle of success in that field as far as I am concerned!! Actually - whereabouts in the UK do you hail from? I also used to live in Stoke-on-Trent!

Hey DTH - how's Ireland treating you? I bet it's getting cold there now!

CHRISMOORHEAD

I actually brought up the "What did you want to do with your life?" imponderable fairly recently, so I have the answer pretty well laid out in my head.

What I really "want" is for a meteor or something to hit the Earth, and turn it in to "Urth". Radiation and massive natural disasters will result in spiders the size of cars, oversize carnivorous bats and somehow the re-emergence of the saber toothed tiger. I will ride on a Texas Longhorn steed and smite things with my Sword of the Apocalypse Rider (And they will be smote!). I'll also have a customized American Ironhorse Legend with a die cast steel horses head on the front that shoots flames out of it's nose when I hit the nitrous injection and side mounts for my scattergun and HK UMP45. There'll also be magic.

But, failing all of that, I've had the inclination to go career military for a long time. I enlisted, then I got set back for about a year and a half. God willing, I'll be getting back to that goal any day now. I really wanted to stay SF, but it looks like things wont be panning out that way. I suppose it's no big thing, though, as long as I get to serve I'll be happy. In the long run I'll make a decision whether or not to become an officer or start contracting. Both have their benefits. I'd also like to try to get into MMA professionally irregardless of what I'm doing military wise. My ideal life at 35 would be to have had a brief but very successful active military career, still be a reservist, be UFC light-heavyweight champion, and to have some sort of federal law enforcement job. Then to die on a deployment at 38. There'll also be a woman, but I'm not going to say her name.

High expectations? Yeah, I figure why have fantasies if you're going to compromise even a little bit.

Morning all you imponderers! Got a case of the Mondays? Well don't fret, it's cyber Monday! Much like Black Friday (or National Buy Nothing Day), it's yet another time to spend money!

All joking aside, I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving - those of us in the states at least =)

Morning, all!
I missed far too much this weekend, so I'll hit a few key points and leave it at that...hopefully I can stay on top of it today.

Qing ren! Thank you for continuing the thread! I must say that I love the new picture!

CMH, I do have to say that I like your idea of Urth...sounds like my kind of place!

Alright, I know I am missing a lot, and I apologize. I give hugs and kisses to all and sundry, with the hopeful promise that I'll keep caught up today!

Until then, more coffee is needed!

CMH- wow not expecting much in the way of change are we? Actually I love the idea of saber toothed tigers and magic and all, but I'd feel a bit like I was in the old cartoon Thundarr the Barbarian ( yes I watched a lot of cartoons as a kid) As for the millitary thing..good luck and I'm somewhat surprised they've not snapped you up already.

Morning all and welcome to our newcomers. It's always nice to have new faces on the board. Now I need coffee so I'm off to the pub.

yeah this absent pub thing was a bit worrying.

Just trying to drum up the patience and strength to go teach the kids fractions. I've got a self bet that they've all completely forgotten how to do them while we were on break...plus about 1/4 of them don't really get it yet anyway. There are some great things about special ed, but the frustration of spending 6 weeks teaching the same concept only to have most of them not grasp it is not one of them:) Oh well we can just kep trying and maybe the light will go on:)

The world needs more teachers like you .Especially special ed.

I'm sure it's frustrating though. I have a niece who has down's & trying to teach her is difficult at best. But also so rewarding when the light does come on .
I couldn't imagine trying to teach a whole class.You should get a medal !

Magdalena - No, go on, a portal to what/where? I shouldn't be the only one with unrealistic fantasies.

And I don't get the plastic rocket and pony reference, what in the hell were you talking about?

Tristan - Good to see you back bro. I hope you had a good weekend/Thanksgiving. It was excellent for my family: My dad got a 5 point buck and I met with great success at the battle I went to on Saturday.

MSG - Heh, I actually just finished watching Conan the Destroyer last night. Thundar the Barbarian was a close second for coolness/campyness, but being a cartoon it had no chance of standing up to Conan. A cross between that and "The Road Warrior" is what I'm looking for. I'm actually surprised so many people like the idea.

Hello, MSG! Medal. I definitely agree with that one!

LA29...did the three survive?

CMH, we had a roast venison at our office the day before Thanksgiving. The husband of one of my co-workers is an avid hunter...it was a delicious start to the holiday.

GED, Howdy! Thanks for the welcome!

Thanksgiving was one of those food-coma inducing weekends...lots of food, fun, and family time. Very nice.
I hope everyone else had a good one, too?

Hi Ged ! Always a pleasure to see you.

I went to a really cool show friday night. It's a band called Musical Box & they recreate old concerts done by Genesis back when Peter Gabriel was in the lead.It was very interesting how exact these people were .All in all, a great show to see.

That's because everybody in line was checking out the chick at Coles.

Careers. In the olden days your very identity was tied to what you did to the point that the family name very often stemmed from it. Now we don't know who we are, what we want to be and suffer from identity crises as oft as not.

When I took my aptitude tests in grade school and high school, I always ranked high in the arts and sciences, low in the clerical and, er, physical fields. My earliest memories state that I wanted to be a scientist. Not in any speciality. Just a scientist. Over time I focused in on astronomy and physics with some biology and chemistry thrown in. I went through a history phase at some point but never tied it to a career interest.

In high school all my energies got split between the graphic, literary and performing arts, and theology. Ultimately, I opted to become a minister as I felt led that way or had a calling or however you want to put it. At length I found that I didn't meet up with my own standards and came to the conclusion I had no right to tell anyone how to live their life.

I dropped out of college and I spiraled downward. At the point of homelessness I signed on for a three week stint in the Registrar's Office at the University of Michigan. That was nearly 20 years ago (this coming January) and I'm still here. I started as a clerical worker (beginning to see the irony/lesson here?) and am now a mid-level, eh, administrator.

I am currently working a second job on the weekends working the grocery stock room (mini-warehouse) of a giant regional superstore (Meijer for you locals) that sells EVERYTHING there is. If the apocalypse comes and "Urth" rises, that's where I'm headed. Food, clothing and supplies for a lifetime for me and mine and the guns and ammo to hold fort. Anyway, it is physically arduous and mildly perilous. Irony the second.

Are either my "dream job?" You've got to be kidding. But in the days of hunger, the dream was to eat, so I begrudge it not. I dream here now and for the moment that is enough. I think I'd like to be involved with the writing staff of a TV show or movie (I love the Dick van Dyke Show) with permaybehaps a Sci-Fi theme. But I'm not there yet. Hell, I'd be happy just to finish one of must be nearly a dozen novels by now.

Hi to all the newcomers, both to the Imponderables and to FireflyFriends. Hugs, of course to all the regulars, which I am happy to report are now too numerous simply to list off.

I dream of being a writer too, Jonny. We'll have to start our own sci-fi show!

It can be one heck of a stuggle to find the job you want. I went through a couple of hellish years at a job where I was bullied, but it all worked out in the end. It was horrible at the time, but I was eventually vindicated and was able to leave with my head held high. Now I'm really happy where I am. Even if the hours are long!

That's exactly the thread I was thinking about. I will get to your older post(s) soon.

I FUCKING HATE PUBLIC GYMS!

I almost just got in to a fight cause some prick kept getting in the way of a clock that I was keeping time with. All of sudden he gets in my face about how I'm staring at him or some stupid shit. So now he's got me pissed off, and I actually do start staring at him after he walks away just to piss him off. If it weren't for a cop that comes in there regularly I woulda smashed the fucker's head with a 5 pounder.

And the atmosphere, for fucks sake, I can't be in there 5 minutes in the afternoon without listening to the incessant bitching of guys about their girl friends or about who they've fucked most recently. And the fucking women and their FUCKING perfume... IT'S A GYM, LEAVE THE SHIT AT HOME!

Y'know I try and not think in terms like this most of the time, but most of those assholes don't even have a legitimate reason to be at the fucking gym. Staying fit so that they can fuck more people for longer periods of time, training to get better at some game that has no real world application outside of it's self... pigheaded, ego driven shit baggers! I'm trying to keep in shape so that I don't get my ASS SHOT OFF!

FUCK!

HUGS CMH sounds like a really frustrating moment. I am with you on the no perfume rule...may I add no cologne, make-up, or those idiotic matching workout suits. I really like my gym ( 24hr Fitness ) precisely because it's an all business, we're here to work out, atmosphere where everyone pretty much ignores you and stays in their own zone... nothing more irritating than someone trying to talk to you or whatever when you're trying to count reps or just keep yourself on track...

I'm not going either...

It was so empty here last time when all you guys were gone!

EDIT: Oh, and I have to say that I pretty much detest public gyms too. Or any kind of gym for that matter. It's bad enough being out of shape, but to try and do it in front of other people is just awful...also, taking gym in school gave me a healthy dislike for sports as well. That cologne thing is annoying too...people feel the need to spray a toxic cloud of it whenever they're done exercising, and it isn't pleasant...

You should see the lesson our gym teacher does on why perfume/cologne is not the same as showering.

We'll set up a support group for non-D*C attendees. Don't worry, there'll be people about!

Hah, yeah the not at D*C party that RMMC started last time was pretty shiny too!

MsG, I wish the gym teacher did that at my school....the mixed scents of Bath & Body Works and body odor is NOT a pleasant one...
